I'd advise against it purely because you're gonna be queuing up for a day or two in/around rajdurbar (Pararastra Mantralaya) during the application process.
However, this is another reminder for me to renew my passport.

there are two options:
1. pay Rs. 5,000 fees and it'll be ready exactly a month from the day you submit the application
2. if you pay Rs. 10,000 fees, they'll expedite the process and it'll be ready in a week
i'm planning to go with the latter and get my firsr MRP before I renew my visa next year because airlines are not going to accept non-MRPs for much longer.

if you do number 2 , they will expediate by only couple of days , doesnt make too difference
