Iam an F1 student who is currently doing Masters. I am also working for firm as i have CPT. During my recent visit back home there were certain life threatening events that occured due to which i am planning to file for an asylum. Given the situation can i still file for an asylum ? if i do will my current CPT get cancelled automatically if my asylum is denied?
Any information would greatly be appreciated.

nepallover123, you don't need to know the actual life threating event to answer his question. I am not an expert on this Asylum nor I have done one myself. But I know few friends who got approved and few were denied.
However, I know this basic - that you can file Asylum based of many circumstances, and his\her ( matt20) would fall under somthing like "fear of life in his/her homecountry".
Back to his question -
matt20, I don't think you will loose ur current status of F1, so meaning that your CPT shouldn't be canceled as well. I have seen many who had filed Asylum while F1, and their case was denied and they did nothing to adjust their status.
However, what I have heard is that if your case is denied, and if you wish to futher challenge that in immigration court with the help of a lawyer, and at that point it gets more complicated, and at that point you might loose ur current immigration status.
I hope this helps.

It;s not about "you" and/or "me".
I might be the most stupid out there, but then I doubt ur ability in this matter.
The originator of the thread (matt20) clearly knows what he is talking about. He knows that his recent life threating event makes him feel that he can file for asylum with a hope to get it approved. He never asked you if his recent event qualifies to file asylum. He has done his part, his homework. and he has alreday made up his mind about it
During my recent visit back home there were certain life threatening events that occured due to which i am planning to file for an asylum.
His main concern is what happens to his status once he files asylum and it gets denied. Do he losses his F1 status and finally CPT to work?.
So next time before u point fingers at somone's Intellectual, please be aware of the fact that what makes you right to do so.
Peace......

Not all life threatning events qualify. For eg I spitted at my neighbours face and now he wants tk kill me , such events dont qualify. It has to be race, religion, natii nality, membershipon some sosu al group or political opinion. May be he was trying to understand if he genuienly qualifies before he throws out suggestions. U are little too hard on him .take it easy.

Shrestha Ji, I totally agree with u - not all life threatning events qualify, it has to be motivated with one of the cause you have mentioned.
I should assume that a person doing his masters, working on CPT has done all his homeworks, done his readings, googled lots of sites before asking any questions.
I think matt20 clearly knows what he/she is upto.
I hope nepallover123 didn't assume that matt20 "paragliding in pokhara during vacation somehow mal-functioned" or "maybe matt20 was rafting in Trisuli and he almost drowned" and it was a life threatning event , so just to make sure he was asking that question.
SO anyway.......Peace is what we should be proud of; not hate..........I dont hate nobody

Stupida,
I totally understand that you are trying to help. Likewise, I am trying to help matt 20. I am not here to question anybodys intellect. However, as I was asking him questions so that I can better help him. I have got my US citizenship through asylum and, am working for yahoo right now. I thought I can better help him, that was just my intention and way of helping him. I think you have just exaggerated the matter. Hope you take the matter peacefully.
Thank You
