This is sad but it reminds us of another real world example why you can't compare apples to oranges. I have been stressing that point a lot in my postings. In this news piece, when someone called him Jackie Chan, Dorje Gurung of Nepal got agitated and called them terrorists. Jackie Chan is an actor, a hero, you can't comparably try to get your thoughts across by calling them terrorists.

I hope Dorje Gurung will be released from prison soon for his bad analogy. It is absurd that you get jailed for expression your opinions, but the middle east is not known for their liberal thoughts.

Teacher appears in Doha court, faces felony charge of insulting Islam

A Nepalese teacher fired from a prestigious secondary school in Qatar for remarks he made to students last month appeared in a lower Doha court today on charges of insulting Islam.

Dorje Gurung, who taught chemistry at Qatar Academy, was seen by Doha News this morning leaving the court in handcuffs.  If convicted, Article 256 of the Penal Code stipulates that he could face up to seven years in jail.

Colleagues, friends and students interviewed by Doha News said Gurung, whose two-year teaching contract was set to expire in July, had been facing problems at QA with students who did not respect his authority, in part due to his nationality.

Two of Gurung’s friends at the courthouse shared with Doha News notes of the teacher’s account of what happened. Here is a summary:

Fateful week

On Monday, April 22, Gurung said he had a sit-down chat with three 12-year-old boys who were making fun of him. Among other things, the seventh graders poked fun at his appearance, calling him “Jackie Chan,” a famous Chinese actor.

On Tuesday, April 23, the mocking again began in earnest while Gurung was in line for lunch. At first, he said the teasing was light-hearted, but then one student put his hand on Gurung’s shoulder and a finger in his nose. At this point, Gurung grew agitated and said remarks to the effect of, how would you like to be stereotyped i.e. called a terrorist?

On Wednesday, April 24, he had a meeting with school management. On Thursday, April 25, he submitted his account of what happened and was told to go home. On Sunday, April 28, he was fired.

Later that week, Gurung was jailed for his remarks. According to his friends, Gurung will remain there at least until his next court hearing, which will be held in two weeks. He still does not have a lawyer, but the Nepalese embassy previously told Doha News that it will investigate the case.

International attention

Qatar Academy has acknowledged that it let go a teacher after formal complaints were made, but said it would be “inappropriate to comment further,” now that the matter has been picked up authorities.

Meanwhile, the teacher’s case is starting to draw international attention and has sparked a conversation in Doha about racism, accountability, “wasta” and tolerance.

Selywn Price, a longtime friend of Gurung’s who does not live in Qatar, said he and other colleagues are following the story closely:

We are all very concerned about his situation, and feel very powerless to help in any way. At the moment we are attempting to engage a lawyer in Doha to represent him, and offering donations to pay for such representation, but we would very much like to be able to contact him to find out how he is and how best we can help him.

Thoughts?

It's hard to pass a judgement on other countries policy; but regardless of where you are, this penalty is a little too severe.

What Mr. Gurung did was not ideal for a teacher. Yeah, I'd be pissed to if some 12 year old good-for-nothings kept teasing me with racial slurs (and don't tell me it ain't); but if I am a teacher, I should be handling it differently; that too in a foreign country with known boundaries on speech.

Still the penalty is too severe. Hope Mr. Gurung is freed soon.

It is sad indeed. The laws of these countries have not been changed since the stone ages it seems. Getting jailed for such a harmless comment.

Hope he gets released soon and goes back to Nepal.

Ok this guy's first name is not Gurung name, Dorje common thats lama sherpa or tibetan name. These lamas sherpas tamangs,  Please stop using Gurung surnames after u land from Tibet. Y'all don't speak Nepali properly. When they in Nepal they steal Gurung's identity n then call themselves Nepali whereas as soon as they land in USA, they call themselves Tibetan n file asylum. Freaking ....

Oooh .... They can dish it but can't take it? Unless the court rules against this absurd charge, incidents like these will stain Qatar's image of being an emerging center for openness and liberalism in the Middle East.  Being an outsider is no easy task in much of the Middle East, let alone being a Kafir (infidel/non-believer). Not just are you deprived of equal representation under the law, you also face a highly biased and prejudiced system that sometimes goes against the basic tenants of international law. Case in point the execution of a Sri Lankan maid  a few months ago in Saudi Arabia for the death of her employer's child. She was a minor at the time of the alleged crime, did not understand English or Arabic well, and, according to human rights advocates, was coerced by the police into signing a confession that was later used against her in court. It is shameful enough that  people from poorer countries are routinely mistreated and abused in the Middle East -- the fact that this incident occurred at a "prestigious" institution - against a teacher -  makes it all the more disturbing because you would think such institutions would be at the forefront of fighting this kind of prejudice.

Vivant
Let me ask you a question. Do you think this is worse than your other posting of a brown woman who was not allowed to enter inside a specific room at the white house dinner? See, Qatar is full of brown people. A brown woman was not allowed inside a room at the white house dinner in America seems a lot less racist than a poor Nepali who was harassed to insanity and who utter a single sterotypical word, and now has to face many years in jail. Don't you think? Racism, intolerance exist everywhere, not just in America. It's just the level of cruelty that differs in different countries.

For all of you who don't know what we are talking about. Here is the thread Vivant brought up of racism in America.

No, both cases are equally deplorable. In the first case, the victim did not take it lying down. Hopefully Mr Gurung won't either. Doesn't matter where this happens or who it happens to - it's wrong, period.

These muzzis are lucky to have the vast supply of oil under their feet. if it was not for the oil they would be just as worse off as the afghanis.
having said that i can see issue on both sides here, as stated these muzzis are people with backward caveman mentality (as shown by their law) with lots of money following a hardcore radical religious belief system. A deadly combo all around. on the other hand Mr. Gurung should have not engaged in an argument with these 12 year olds and compared them to "terrorists."   Not sure what the full story is here but somehow it seems to have not made it all on the news. However; if they did put him in jail just because he called them terrorists then that pretty  fked up.
