The biggest talk of
this week in India is either Sonam Kapoor suffering from Swine flu or the
banning of the documentary by BBC on the 2012 Delhi Gang Rape named India’s
Daughter. I am sure with all the money flowing out and the medical assistance
Miss Kapoor will recover but I doubt India will recover the damage done by the
banning of the documentary.
No
offense to Sonam Kapoor, I am still a huge fan but my entire week’s focus was
on the debate whether India should lift the ban on the documentary. The
documentary made by Leslee Udwin who spend two years in the making, was
scheduled to be aired on BBC on 8th March 2015 on the occasion of
International Women’s Day. But for some reason it was released couple of days
ahead of the due date.
Jyoti
Singh, a medical student was being raped and brutally murdered by 6 men on the
12th of December 2012 while she was returning from a movie with a male
friend. The entire nation came to a halt and a crossroad where things were supposed
to change but was the society ready for it? During that time I read an article
where it was explained the condition of the girl. The doctors at the Saftargunj
Hospital were petrified and horrified with the condition the girl was brought
in. Not only she was raped but her vagina was viciously damaged with an iron rod,
her intestine was found wrapped in a cloth couple of meters away from where she
was found on the road and her other organs were also damaged resulting to
massive blood loss. Even being a woman I cannot imagine the pain she endured,
mentally, emotionally and pysically. She was bitten on the face and all over
the body. Her male friend was also beaten to death and was critical.
India
has seen its youth uprising without any leader or party at that time. Delhi was
under international pressure and within couple of weeks all 6 perpetrators were
arrested, among which one was a juvenile. 5 of them are sentenced to death
whereas the juvenile was only given 3 years on imprisonment which will end on
December 2015. It is still debatable if the juvenile should also be hanged till
death for he is equally responsible for the crime.
Today
I finally got my hands on the documentary. Even if it is banned in India for
all the shitty reasons, we in Nepal and all across the world can have our
access to it. It was a mixed feeling of emotions gushing down my spine. First 10
minutes I was crying, rest of the time I was disgusted by the thoughts of the
people involved and the kind of mentality people live with. Mukesh Singh, one
of the perpetrator said that woman should not go out alone at night, they are
to be blamed for being raped. I pity people with such sick mentality and mental
disorder. Oh you need to check the documentary to know the defense lawyers’
statement. Highly recommended.
I
guess the people who had petitioned for the ban also feel the same and if this
documentary will come out and if people’s mentality changes there will be a
revolt for women’s liberation. There are so many times in the film that you
feel like punching on the face of the person who is making the statement. This
is an eye opener for India and rest of the world, how we think about something
might not be the right thing. If you think women should be always under the
guidance of a man then probably you are thinking like a rapist. It is our
culture that engraves us that men are superior and can do whatever they want
with women and get away with it. It is time we teach our girls their value and
teach our boys to respect that. We don’t have to go and change the world. The
first change is within you. Next time when you look at a woman, appreciate her
presence in your life, not mentally rape her.
(Not disclosing much about the documentary because I
want everyone to watch it and decide for themselves) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W6WrShqKGE

Stats wise US have more reported cases of rape because rape in the U.S. is not a taboo subject. Women being raped in India goes largely unreported because they have such a male dominated society. Often times, rape victims in India will be turned away by the police or punished by their own families or communities. Not to mention the legal system in India is atrocious. Rape-cases take months and months to move through court. India only recently decided to speed up rape trials and there was such a global outcry on the conditions of women in India. I guarantee women in India are raped and sexually assaulted far more than in any other developed nation on earth aside from maybe South Africa. India's population is huge, impoverished, and has a huge gender gap. It's the perfect mix for a booming human trafficking industry and gross injustices towards women.

1 Indian Girl is raped every 20 mins 1 girl/ 20 mins 3 girls/ 1 hr 72 girls/ 1 day 26,280 girls/ 1 year Jyoti was raped on 12th Dec 2012. Today 5th Mar 2015. So, roughly 813 days (2 yrs 83 days) have already been passed. That means 58,536 women have been already raped after Jyoti. Some Nepali women also lie in that category. That's the stat. And I felt great pain (mentally) doing this math.... Just thinking how many of them were brutally raped and killed..... A chill runs through my spine..... Oh Lord! Save humanity !!

Dev, I cant imagine the calculation and the kind of brutally women have to go through.....and I ask why .....why....why..... I kept on asking that question all the time while I was watching the documentary.... This is not the first time that had happened....but why not make it the last one! Thank you for the calculation....I like your perspective!

" if you are stopping ur girls to go out at night just coz she is safe in the house.....I think it is high time you change your mentality." As I said before it depends on the situation. If you live in a part of town where girls are raped or murdered then I would definitely advise my sister to not go there. This is not about any anti women mentality but about being prudent and smart. It would not be a smart idea to go out alone to such areas by themselves whether they are male or female, but specially for females if they are being preyed upon.
Not only a brother or father, even a mother or sister would advise the same thing.

first of all RIP Dear Jyoti! you would be always a strong inspiration for me to respect the women much and more. and sojoketo does. This article of Ambrosia has some bitter lines that hurt my sentiments, being a guy who always believe and accept that women are always superior than the men due to the fact that women have been granted a privilege to create and establish the most precious and adorable relationship 'MOTHER' and the way mother loves, no one could ever. I am not going to pour my dissatisfaction on those lines on this thread as i don't want even a single bad stuff on this thread which has the name of 'late Jyoti' (India's daughter, i would say World's daughter) associated. I wish and I pray, no girl(no human, no living beings) ever have to suffer rape, abuse.

And yet we have our kanoon mantri who is advocating for reducing the prison years for rapists when he should have been making more harsh punishment.

Shuvam, Thank you for linking that Ad...i was looking for it. It is a must watch and must share.... About Dhimpur incident, I feel it is also inhumane to do such things. The law is there to punish the perpetrator. I dont encourage in such acts. But yes the law and order should be strong and fast.

काग ले कान लग्यो भन्दै मा काग को पछाडी दौडने
First of all let me just say that i am for the death penalty for this heinous crime and men have no right to rape women even if women walk naked on the street or prostitutes herself let alone wear jeans, skirt or other skimpy clothes. Although i am not a huge supporter of death penalty, this case however demands one because our society (south asian) is just too prone to do whatever they want to do to people who do not follow the norm. Society encourages Perpetrators to rape in the name of conservatism. As the region is moving towards openness and liberalism society also needs to present a fear of possible punishments for falling out of line.
About the ban of the documentary, many Indians are also in line with punishing the culprit to their fullest extent. What they dont like is how the documentary tried to make a heroism of a rapist for giving him a coverage with statement like " now the girls will just be killed after rape" because of the death penalty". " i was driving the bus for 15 - 20 minutes" and the other gruesome details. After all, its never appetizing when a foreigner makes a video on your own disgusting matter in an attempt to humiliating and disrespecting the country , its people and the victims.
How convinient is it for the producers to doldrum on BAN while not addressing the ethics of jounalism with victim sentiments? All of a sudden India is looking double wrong for banning the video which is exactly what the producers want.
Brits pulled same crap on Indians that India would not back away from pulling to the countries inferior to themselves. There could be a political, economic, or a general hatred for India for the producers and their sponsor to produce such video. The documentary makers also let India know what their power is and who they are in this globe. India cannot stop BBC or youtube. But they certainly could bring chaos in a little country like Nepal.
I just wish India and the Indians took this incident as a lesson on how countries and people can feel when manipulated, humiliated, and disrespected by other countries.

Dear Ambrosia, thank you for bringing this topic here in Sajha. I want to begin with a Sanskrit sloka: यत्र नार्यस्तु पुज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवता: I Where women are worshiped there the Gods reside. Why is rape so rampant in India? In Nepal as well rapes and acid attacks are increasing, and I am really concern about Nepal's future. Where are we heading? We must understand the root cause of rape and eradicate it from that level. Just punishing these criminals will not help in the long rung because prevention is better than cure. It's better to curve the path of incoming meteor before it hits the earth and cause loss of lives. Darkness prevails in the absence of light. Similarly, all crimes happens in the state of ignorance. This is not an ignorance of this and that but it is an ignorance of the Self. Who am I? Why am I here? Who are these people? If I am the subject, all these individuals are also subjects. So, women will no longer be an object when proper Vedic education is provided. If government doesn't take any responsibility in removing the ignorance of its citizen through proper education, then these kinds of serious crime will not stop. The problem with present government of India and Nepal is that they do not take any responsibility on expanding the collective consciousness of its citizen. A nation is nothing but a collective consciousness. In the video it is said, "50% of India's population lives below poverty line, which is a life not worth living." Who are these rapist? Most of them come from poor, uneducated background where violence is the norm. They go through violence from early childhood, their mind is already desensitized with family and social violence. With poverty kicking their ass, and violence in their mind, should we expect their behavior to be in coherence with societal standards? If government expect such a behavior from these poor uneducated citizens, then I would label such government to be a "hypocrite government". Darkness can only be removed by light. Ignorance in people can only be removed through proper knowledge. The present education system doesn't teach its citizen how to cultivate good thoughts. Our mind always runs outside, even the so called educated people have no idea how to control one's own mind. Most people behave nicely when they are in public, but when you check them indoors, they are wild beast and they engage in all kinds of crazy things. Actions doesn't just happen out of nowhere but is the result of inner impulse/desires. How many ordinary beings understand what a desire is and why it pops out from the subconscious mind? These are serious topic and Vedic knowledge deals with it perfectly. Therefore, government of Nepal and India must be serious about these crimes. Who are responsible if we have crimes, wars, disharmony in the world? It is human being alone. Therefore, until and unless Nepal and India starts a total grass root movement by bringing a holistic education system where no child is left behind, these crimes will not stop. All the street children of Kathmandu should be given equal opportunity, all those small children who wash dishes in filthy restaurant must be given priority, if we want to see a prosperous society because: A nation is nothing but a collective consciousness. Government itself is the result of collective consciousness! You will get what you have! Members of government are also the part of collective consciousness. So, this is like a vicious cycle where humans are caught. Government must punish these criminals but until and unless we brings a holistic approach where no one is left behind, there will be no coherence between human nature and natural law. If you go against the natural law by your stupidity, nature will revolt and bring misery in your life.

A large percentage of Indian men believe girls are responsible for the rapes for their inappropriate behavior. By watching this documentary, these men will be ashamed because their thinking is similar to the rapists' thinking. This will help change their mentality. Taking this opportunity, the government should have also embarked on a anti-rape campaign educating men that -the women have right to wear what they want -the women can be out late alone or with whom they want -raping women for what they think is bad behavior is very backward thinking that does not belong in the modern India Unfortunately, the Indian government is ashamed of the documentary and want to bury it, want to pretend this kind of backward men mentality is not common.

poweranger: the women have right to wear what they want - Agreed In fact, most of the women want to wear as less as they can :). being a man, i also want to see woman wearing as less as they want. lesser the better, it makes my eye calm. सीतालता महसुस हुन्छ ई आँखामा. - the women can be out late alone or with whom they want agreed, why not? पार्टी all night is fun and chilling with someone you like/love is rocking powerrange, just a question to you, in fact question to everyone will you let your lovable sweet sister or gf or wife whom you love to death to go out alone? would you say, chadai ghar aija, raati raati nahid OR jati bela aye pani aija, enjoyy? answer to yourself and ask 'are you thinking like a rapist OR you are much careful for your lovable one?' it is said, it depends, it matters on how people perceives and i believe it does. women has right to do every fair thing right to study, right to work, right to choose their friend, life partner, right to wear whatever they want or whatever they don't, right to hang out with anyone they like no matter it's day or night, right to hang around alone too. No offense to gentleman, sojoketo believes women and men are not equal, @ least for sojoketo women are superior than men and i did mention why it is for sojoketo. मेरी आमा सदै भन्छीन, त तेरो बुढी को फरिया धोएर बस्ने छस she is right! i would love to bcoz that's how sojoketo gonna love his future wife :)

sojoketo asked: "will you let your lovable sweet sister or gf or wife whom you love to death to go out alone? would you say, chadai ghar aija, raati raati nahid OR jati bela aye pani aija, enjoyy?" Power_Ranger answered: This depends on the area you live. In some areas (cities/countries) you are more comfortable to let your sister go out alone and in some areas not so much. You have to use your judgement. But, everybody has to fight this battle against rapists and the men mentality blaming women for the rapes. A better culture is a culture where women are not scared to go out rather than a culture where women have to be accompanied by a male relative.
