I am against it. I grew up as a Hindu, now an atheist, living overseas. I love and respect all religions. Our Nepali Hindu will eventually be at a disadvantage since this is India trying to flex its muscle by forcing some people to believe it is to our advantage. Remember, India has a huge interest in our land and resources. They will be as disaster like they came to help during the earthquake. If Nepali does become a Hindu state, you are officially handing our country to India just like Sikkim. You will slowly become a state of India. If you think India controls and intervene too much in our politics now, just imagine what will happen after this. So be careful of what you wish for.

I think we can have our own identity just being secular. Nepali Hindu need to realize this is all politics. You are better off being a Nepali Hindu and not fall for Indian tricks. If you feel like being a secular nation will make people go crazy and they will start eating cow, then you are falling for their fear tactics.. We all will pay dearly for this. So think NOT in terms of religion, but politics. It is a bad deal to all Nepali.
Sharpen your hindi, Nepali language will be replaced eventually.

Kiddo this guy has the best answer why Hindu tag should not be removed. I don't know if you can open the link but Kumar Regmi the senior lawyer speak for the people.

There in-lies the problem. I just haven't seen legitimate argument against having a hindu=rashtra, other than the opinion (which I align with) that religion and governance should be kept separate.

@divorceguy. Not sure you are just trolling but if that's your argument then it is not much different than a small group of people claiming the state for themselves. Well, who decides who gets what? Should it be left for the referendum? If we go with "democracy" then the majority should get their say, in which case it no-doubtedly becomes hindurashtra, and your "Christian rastra" point will be voided.

@Vhotee. While I agree with your secular sentiments, I don't share the apprehension of India taking over if we become Hindu rashtra. First of all, India itself is not Hindu; it has a major muslim population (largest one next to Indonesia) and a fair share of Christians. Sure, Bhajapa and Shiv Sena might apply the pressure but I just don't see them taking over Nepal, just because Nepal becomes a Hindu rashtra. The fear you have about being Hindu-rashtra is the fear I share of not being one. I will be elated if no religion meddles the politics, but I am afraid that will not be the case. Percentage of Christians in Nepal has taken a geometric progression and has simply exploded. The interest groups working in behalf of Christianity and Islam will be able to openly increase their pressure and frankly speaking, I would pick the liberal Hinduism (or Buddhism) over those religions.

Heck, I am up for making us a Budhist country, that might promote our tourism as well.

Mangale, I didn't click the link but I did listen to one of the lawyer advocating for Hindu rashtra. One point I didn't agree about was his point on religious tourism. If we become a Hindu country, we will attract few more hindus, but will alienate many other religions - including Buddhism.

Invading Nepal in the 21st century is very unlikely regardless of what it ends up being as a nation. If that ever happens, India will receive a massive outcry from the world because Nepal seems to be loved by many countries and India would be another victim of Western power's bomb showers which I don't think those curry smelling head bobbling mofos want to endure.

@Kiddo,

Exploding Christian should not be the reason to be anti-secular. Like you said, India has a significant Christian and Muslim, yet it is NOT a Hindu country. So why are we so scared of Christian? That is like putting a tape on a cancer stricken wound. We need to find out and solve why are they converting to Christian, rather than become unwelcoming. Remember, Christians have enter in every countries, Nepal is no exception. India was colonized by a Christian country, many muslim countries were colonized by the French. China, Japan and Korea were once infiltrated with Christians missionaries. How did they survived them? That should be the tactics we need to acquire, instead of hating and unwelcoming the Christians. How can you call your faith "liberal" if you discriminate another faith, that is an oxymoron statement.

Most nations on this planet are secular or semi-secular with regards to "constitution". There will always be a "popular/dominent" religion on every countries, but it does not mean you write "Hindu" in the constitution. Mostly muslim nations are the ones who write islam in their constitution.
See the map below and the red indicates state sponsored religious constitution - mostly Muslims. Do we want to be like them?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secular_state

As you have pointed my fear of India. The same things goes to you - the fear of Christians. Let us be honest - we both have fears. But your fear is far from being a reality, mine is not too far. Converting every Nepali into Christian and making it a Christian nation and destroying the Hindu tradition will take a very long long long time. Just like China and Japan, if the people/culture/tradition/belief is strong, the Christian will NOT succeed. I highly doubt they can go beyond the poor villages in Nepal. Our belief is old and deep rooted.
However, India and China both has done in the past and are still doing - annexing the smaller countries with ties to their culture/land/history. China is trying that on Taiwan and many small islands near Vietnam and Phillipines. India has done it to Sikkim.

@mangale
Mr Regmi is wrong in many of his statements. He seems to be confused between "popular" religion and "constitution". He has observed the swearing on a bible by the president but he seems to avoid the basic tenent of the American constitution "separation of church and state". America is NOT a christian nation by "constitution". However, it was founded by the Christians and is the "popular" religion. Yes, all of the elected presidents were Christians and hence is the bible. Why all Christian president? is another subject matter for discussion. But it is not written in the constitution. Who is stopping you to swear on Geeta in Nepal during the oath? Just don't write "Hindu" nation in the constitution, that's all.
And he is wrong again saying the whole ceremony (beginning to the end) of the oath taking during the American president is all prayer and religious based. It is NOT.

India is NOT a Hindu by "constitution", yet there are more Hindu. Why can't we be like India, a secular country. However, Regmi has lots of theory why indian is different (even though it is secular) which is baseless, just his opinion.

He seems to be more fearful of enemies that are far far away than the two enemies that are next to you. It is just a fear he wants to create that we will be converted to Christian and will be the battle ground to watch over India and China. What good will that be if we get taken over by India like Sikkim? Deal with the enemy that is infront of you, than plan for the one that is very far far away.

He seems to be wanting to add another useless "glory" beside Mt. Everest and Buddha, that we are a "Hindu" nation. Another is religious tourism and that we will be rich - seriously?
95% of Thailand is Buddhist, 5% muslim, the country is a secular. Yes, Thailand is NOT a Buddhist nation. How about that?

Mr Regmi seems to be fearful of the Christians and don't want to welcome them. Yet he talks about "tolerance" and being "liberal". A nation should NOT have any religion and everybody should be free to convert to any religion they want to, worship anything they want to. But the government should be neutral. Just don't force them to be Hindu, which is exactly he is doing. It creates favoritism and promotion of one group and marginalisez the rest. It is NOT a victimless, as you are told to believe.

Vhotee
While I agree with your argument on theory, the reality I have seen is much different.

I am not a religious person, but I go to temple and sometimes church for peace of mind. I don't dislike Christianity or any other religion. The issue I am having is the conversion that's being done - not because I am worried about Hinduism becoming extinct, but the way conversions have been taking place in Nepal. Most of the times, the poor and uneducated are promised of a miraculous cure or something else in return. I absolutely detaste the idea of trying to convert somebody else to your religion, voluntarily or forcefully. A person should take his/her own initiative and if he/she likes to convert, he/she should be able to. But many NGOs, diplomats and foreign forces are hell bent on converting Nepalis and there might be bigger motive behind the conversion.

As ridiculous and over the top Nas' claim sound, sometimes there are truth to them. My question is what determines the best path for an issue of contention? Is it the majority or something else? If majority, Hindus will easily out number any other group. The fact that most are quiet, shouldn't be taken as their weakness.

Vhootee

You said "I highly doubt they can go beyond the poor villages in Nepal. Our belief is old and deep rooted."

That is not impossible because that's exactly how the Maoists did it.

Kiddo,

Christain have and will always be a religion of marketing and converting people, it is in their core value to spread the message of Jesus. Your ways can be different than theirs, but at the end of the day, both are just religion. Nobody is stopping you to spread and convert people. I know it is not a Hindu thing, but it is their way.You pass religion through blood and children (through population), they do with population plus conversion. It is like telling people NOT to open a shop near your shop because you don't like the fact they might become richer than you and they will build shop after shops. But the reality is - it is a free world.
Those poor uneducated villager can be converted to any religion, including Islam (have you thought about that?). Hey, atleast the Christians will help them a little bit. Islam will use force.

I, on the other hand, want more Christian in Nepal. No, I am not a Jesus lover, but I think globally what can happen to Nepal. If you have not been to Nepal the last 10-20 years, then you are missing the growing population of Muslims, they have grown a lot. Remember, muslim people make babies very fast and the fastest growing religion in this world. Nothing wrong with that. While hindu can live in peach with Christian but Muslim can and will be a problem. Look at India. Even they cannot handle them. Reminding you, we are also close to Pakistan, Afganistan and Bangladesh. Muslim in Nepal + Poverty = Jihadist. It does not take too much to convert (ie force) Nepal into Muslim country, but it will take a very long time for the Christian.

My point is Christian can be arshole and annoying but they don't kill people in the name of religious conversion these days, but Islam will. Yes, I know they were killer and worst than anybody in the past, but they don't resort to violence these days in conversion. Pick your side. Beside Hindu and Buddhist, one or two other religion WILL rise up in population, it is inevitable. Let there be an equal proportion of Muslim and Christian, or else we are waiting for trouble in the future. Your hindu identity is much safer with Christians than the Muslims. (That is my personal belief, you can disagree if you think Islam is a religion of peace and all that liberal things)
I prefer the Christians.

Nepal should have an Atheist campaign to rid Nepal of all the poison named religion. Religion is a bunch of bull meant to brainwash people. Please are animals like sheep they will follow the herd. They are always looking for someone to follow so they fall into the trap of religion easily which have been followed of hundreds of years.

Atheists should rise up and take leadership to rid the world of all the bs.
