Can there be an economic solution to the conflict? Changing the feudal system into capitalism, or socialism may be? I mean, easier said than done, just pondering... My analysis is that the core of the conflict is the semi-feudal system of economy in Nepal; Baburamýs explanation of regional structure and underdevelopment in Nepal, a plan to disrupt the system completely to establish a bottom-up approachýhis hatred towards capitalism (although Nepal is not a capitalist country but has a semi-feudal, semi-capital culture), his hatred towards Indian expansionism (India-Nepal treaties at the advantage of the former), and the deep rooted autocracy (monarchy) that stands as a barrier for political institutions to flourish. Nevertheless, semi-feudal system that Nepal is in right now in (that drags up all other issues of caste, gender, class) is what tickled Baburam to start on a mass uprising, what do you think?

with due respect i did opened dictonary.com but i didn't find it. it says "NO RESULTS FOUND FOR SEMI-FUEDAL". I am not trying to be smart here cuz I, myself doing some small research on it. BTW by saying this i am gonna share my view later on cuz right now i am listening Dr. Bhattarais' speeches and his interviews. How he makes ppl think he is one of them? with peace n love P.S. very very sorry for offending you sis

Hi, My belief is that almost all the problems has an economic solution. Even terrorism. Don't jump to my throat yet...Let me finish. The extent of the ecomonic benefits required are widely different. How far can we go and how much we can offer is the question. Can we go to the extent that will satisfy Baburam or his associates ? Is the person in charge (who is in charge in Nepal now ? King ? the family killer??) is willing to or is capable of making the required change ? Do you think he even cares ? Nah !! On the other hand, I do believe that changing the system from this to that will do nothing. Look what happened when one-party system was changed to Multi-party system ? So it is a complex situation. Besides, Baburam knows that if he gets to power, it will be for a month or so...it will just collapse on its own. No international support... how can a tiny country like Nepal sustain on its own when gaints like Soviet Union has to give in ? All Baburam is doing is killing more people...just like any other criminals. Saroj

dc girl, i finally found the defination of feudual and feudolism, and i think i got a little of your concept. dont get mad, i was just trying to know the real meaning of semi-feudal society, and why is it a good idea for nepal to move towards socialism?? i am just a little knoleged person, it wud be rather good if you expand it so i can understand.. and btw, this quote is from CPN Maobadi's website, and your views to match very much... "With the clarion call of 'it is right to rebel' the Party on that day led the masses all over the country to rebel against the reactionary state and direct their ire against the ruling feudal and comprador & bureaucratic capitalist classes so as to smash the existing semi-feudal & semi-colonial state and build a people's New Democratic state. In a preplanned clandestine move selected targets of police out-posts, state-owned agricultural development bank office, factory of a multi-national company, brewery of a comprador bourgeois and premises of a local feudal-usurer were systematically attacked and properties thereof seized, as a symbol of rebellion and to herald the initiation of the people's war on that day. Together with these, hundreds of thousands of revolutionary leaflets & posters were distributed throughout the country to spread the political message of the historical rebellion among the general masses of the people the same day."

Even though, Nepal is a semi-fudal country, it is moving towards capitalism. Maoists, like Dr. Bhattarai, prefer to use jargons to make it feel like Nepal has been hibernating in the era of feudalism and semi-feudalism. But, when you look into the country itself, you find it is moving and evolving away from feudalistic traditions. Nepal adopted capitalistic ideals in the mid 80s, at times with "encouragement" of donor organizations like IMF and the world bank. By the time, Maoists started their insurgency - privatization, free market had been the dominant economic thought within and outside the state structure. SEOs (State Owned Enterprises) were (are) being privatized, country was (is) opened for foreign investments .......... Even though, Nepal is yet to be a completely capitalist country, it was in the process of change and at the midst of that change we saw Dr. Bhattarai running for guns. Now, interesting question probably is to ask, whether such change in economic and (to some extent) social structure had anything to do with the rapid rise of the insurgency ?

a quick response: although i hear gaaule's theory that nepal is slowly evoloving into being more capitalistic, the economy in rural nepal (which is highest on the Maoist's agenda) is feudal/
