I got a great opportunity to participate
NPPA (Nepal Pasa Puch Amerikaye)
(Nepal Friendship Association of America).
Website: http://www.nppa-us.org/

It also has links with several other societies.
Unfotunately, I found dissatisfactions over its
regular members, in my search to answers why
do we have so many societies? e.g. NPPA has
a breakaway faction.

The answer that was given to me by some
loyal members and sympathizers of both societies
is that the origial association has group of members
who will not let new members outside their own circle
to occupy any responsible position and perform good job.
Its like Nepali Congress Party (Girija Group) where the
Koirala family occupies a prime role and they will never
let anyone outside Koirala family to hold an important
position. Thus, the young turks have no other option than
to create a rival new association which the sympathizers
of both group say that the new association is relatively
democratic. Bbut, it lacks history and burden to all well
wishers because they have to pay membership fees to both
and if you don't have interest in occupying any crucial
positions, then, its waste of money and nothing more and
loss of quality in various programs organized by them.

Well, this trend does not limit on NPPA, but, also extends on
ANA and other ANLS blah blah ........... They usually have
meetings held in such a tricky way that they can have their
next executive members from amongh their own closely
watched friends and supporters. They play tricks to avoid
any one outside of their group be able to contest and win
the election. They avoid giving any right to vote to Nepalis
outside their own predefined confident and trustable members.

Well, I tried to find the ANA's website and its ana-home.org
or anaonline.org Their website has link to only the page
for donations to these unfortunate Nepalis. I ofcourse greatly
appreciate their effort to support the families of these
unfortunate Nepalis when went to Iraq in the search of job.
But, ANA-home page should not limit its all other information
and activities to this one particular activtity. This page does
not tell the official information on any other officials or
executives other than Treasurer / GS of the ANA. You
can not trace out who is in their executive board? Once I tried
to get online membership and their website rejected my
submission. Is this their incompetency or their foul game
on members? I am forced to ask this question based on the
rumors that ANA is occupied by peoples who are closed
friends within their circle for long time and they won't let
others to enter, and the membership is one of the several
way how these officials can avoid any challenge from members
outside their own circle of trusted friends? If not, why in this
world where .com boom era, our ANA, the orgnization lacks
infomation dissemination through website?

Why? so many Nepali societies? Why don't they have unified
and efficient association? Why fragmented? Why do young turks
are forced to create new rival societies? A friend of mine who
went to Canada says that the societies in Canada (Nepali societies
and association) offcers are usually the guys who have lived
long in Canada and they usually have their own gatherings in
the name of Nepali Associations and they don't try to mix with
Nepalis who are not in well recognized professions and are comparatively
inferior profession (blue collar job vs white collar jobs). I am hearing
these days that ANA is also occupied by officers who are releuctant
to accept blue collar job Nepalis or simply try to keep away from
Blue collar job doers?

I am posting these issues to discuss and know experience
from others ? Lets discuss and try to resolve what is truth
and what is the reason that makes these associations
lack in quality (e.g. ANA does not have a real working website yet)
and how can we make them service oriented compared to chair
oriented?

Where is NAC's website?

I was very happy to see the list of officer bearers in ANMAusa.org,
thats a part of transparency. ANA lacks it, the very first thing about
an organization.

Viv,

Thanks for the info.

I used to wonder how these several Nepali orgnizations here in USA/North
America define guys like me who is neither a long term employee or student,
but, just a short term visitor (officially).

Naresh Koirala from Canada writes in his NRN report as follows:

Did the Conference Achieve its Objectives?

The discourse during the conference clearly defined the words "NRN" (people of Nepali origin who hold Nepali passports and have lived outside SAARC countries for more than 183 days in a year) and PNO's (People of Nepali Origin who hold foreign passports) and brought to light many of the issues that NRNs and PNOs face in their relationship with Nepal. It also identified the legal impediments, which discourage NRNs in investing their wealth and skills in Nepal."

It looks I am eligible to call a NRN. If I am eligible: then I am more confused to
find the association that fits me and my pocket / size of purse. My purse is not
thick enough to get membership in all Nepalis societies like listed in ANMAUSA.org.
So, can anyone out here tell me which would best fit me, a poor guy living in
WV? Pessimistic peoples should not answer this question. Write your experience
that can be helpful to me?

GP-ji,

It's all right if there are many Nepali organisations in the US and elsewhere.

There need not be one or a few Nepali organisations that attempt to speak to/about all
Nepalis. Let diversity and variety of organisations be a measure of our collective
strength and not of some weakness.

And so, let there be more organisations, more Nepali community leaders of various shapes, sizes and statures who do more activities, run more and varied Nepal-related discussions and all that. All these, I would think, in aggregate, add up to enhancing
the Nepali identity around the world, however that's defined.

Here's an example of what one organisation has done.
Thanks to my long-time friend SD for sending this.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Berkeley, CA. - December 4, 2004

More than two hundred Nepalis, Americans, and Nepali-American friends and families swung to the rhythm of ?resham firiri?, ?laichhau besana", and the heart touching melodies of the ?basuri? (flute) for the annual Himalayan Evening by the Bay fundraising event of Ama Foundation. This event marks the fourth year that Ama Foundation has held its annual fundraiser in Berkeley, CA.

The evening brought together Nepali expatriates and Americans who are fond of Nepal for a three-hour gathering with Nepali food, sale and auction of various Nepali and Himalayan items mixed with offerings of American art and face painting. Guests were entertained by both Nepali and American performers, creating a fusion of East and West, in an effort to raise funds for the most underprivileged and abandoned children of Nepal.

?Even though many of us are not physically in the country, our hearts have not forsaken Nepal. We, together with the American friends and families that we have formed on this side of the world, are trying to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of children who otherwise would have had no future,? said Shrawan Nepali, the founder of Ama Foundation.

Shrawan Nepali himself is no stranger to the plight of these children. He was raised in Paropakar Orphanage in Kathmandu. After completing an M.B.A. degree in the US and a successful career he decided to dedicate his life to helping others. This sentiment of ?giving back? to Nepal was also echoed by Bonnie Ellison, Managing Director of AmaGhar, the home for children in Nepal funded by Ama Foundation.

?Through bringing people together in these events, we can raise awareness and funds to do the work of supporting children at AmaGhar. We currently have many plans for the future, including construction of our own building and the fundraising event helps towards those goals.? Her father, O.T. Ellison, was part of the first American group to arrive in Nepal in 1956. Bonnie spent much of her childhood in the country. She took an early retirement to serve the Nepali people, as her father had done years before.

Himalayan Evening by the Bay is one of the many fundraising events of Ama Foundation. The foundation has other activities through its chapters in Seattle, WA and Davis, CA. Due to the untiring efforts of the Seattle Chapter, Swedish Medical Center, a premier hospital in the region, and Dr. Alfred Blue, a well-renowned surgeon at the hospital, recently donated burn surgery for Sushila K.C. from AmaGhar. Sushila, age 8, had impaired growth due to severe burn scars in 40% of her body.

The publicity that Sushila?s treatments received has created remarkable interest in the plight of poor and abandoned Nepali children in Seattle and the surrounding areas. Ama Foundation continues to raise funds and generate awareness about the situation of such Nepali children through its activities in various parts of America.

About Ama Foundation: The Ama Foundation was founded to provide a refuge for abandoned and underprivileged children in Nepal. The Ama Foundation?s goal is to build and staff facilities that will allow these children who might otherwise die or live in destitute conditions to have a warm and happy home, to get a good education and a chance at a life of being a self-sufficient, productive Nepali citizen.

About AmaGhar: AmaGhar is the children?s facility in Kathmandu, Nepal funded by Ama Foundation. This facility opened in August of 2001. AmaGhar opened with 14 children and has now grown to 37 resident children. Their ages range from 4 to 22 years. Some are orphans; some were being raised by impoverished single parents or grandparents. All of these children had tragic beginnings; their lives had little hope. Now, at AmaGhar there is hope, love, food, health care and education provided by live-in housemothers and tutors.

Currently AmaGhar is in a rented house with a garden and play area surrounded by farms, mountains and public parks where the children have opportunities to learn and explore.

NON-RESIDENT NEPALI (NRN)

A Nepali citizen or a foreign citizen of Nepali origin who stays abroad for employment/carrying on business or vocation or under circumstances indicating an intention for an uncertain duration [at least 183 days] of stay abroad should be a NON-RESIDENT NEPALI ( NRN ). ( Those who stay abroad on business visit, medical treatment, study or such other purposes which do not indicate an intention to stay there for an indefinite period [at least 183 days] should not be considered as NRNs ).

After going through several webpages on American Nepal Societies / Communities and Associations, I realized that my expectations from ANA was wrong indeed. I should not have expected them to act like an parent umbrella organization of Nepali organizations in USA. Let the ANA remain as it is at present as a community of Nepalis who know personally each other, so that they can remain peaceful. Only, my surprise is that the ANA does not have a single newsletter nor it has list of its executive members in its website, I wish they have it soon for their own members sake. I am saying parai bata Sayonara to ANA.

Now, in this course of doing research on Nepali organizations, I feel little more comfortable with ANMA and NepalCouncil.org They look more matured and well
established and in good relation with other Nepali communities. In this course of
my own research on understanding the Nepali communities, I found NRN.org.np,
giving some other clues on who is going to lead Nepalis in America as a parent
umbrella. I found NRN Association has two committees NCC and ICC. ICC is supposed
to represent Nepali communities from different countries including USA. Now,
I had difficulty in snapping the names of individuals who represent Nepalis (Nepali
communities) in USA based on NRN.org.np. Is there anyone who knows the individuals
who are in ICC / NCC of NRNA representing Nepali (communities) in USA? It looks
the NRNA-ICC (USA) can act as an important group of peoples who can lead to
integrate Nepalis and Nepali communities in USA? How were these individuals
nominated in the ICC? Or, such ICC as mentioned in nrn.org.np does not exist in
realty?

I'm no way affiliated with any national organizations.

In case GP's research of Nepali organizations here is still incomplete or in progress:
the ANA web site is: http://www.anaonline.org/index.php
I assume you have already been to that web site. The NAC web site has link to ANA that directs you to their new web site.

If you go to the ANA web site, click on News. You can read several issues of ANA Newsletter - most recent being Summer 2004.
At the bottom of the newsletter, you can find a membership application form. You can fill out the form and send the money. I'm sure they will be more than happy to take your money and grant you a membership. You don't have to know, or you don't need to be known, by anyone to be a member.

A little research on your part before shooting blindly would suit you better.

Happy holidays.

GP ji, here is info on NRN NCC-US from NAC Resolutions Sept. 5 2004:
http://www.nepalcouncil.org/News_detail.php?newsid=16

"Non-Resident Nepalese (NRN) Cell
NAC will create within it a cell to handle the NRN-NCC ( Non-Resident Nepalis-National Coordinating Council) functions for North America and to work with the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) including its International Coordinating Council."

Also, below is ANA President message that just came out today:

Dear ANA Members and well wishers,

Warm greetings to you all from the Nations capital Washington DC. I am Sure you all had a great THANKSGIVING and would like to wish you a very HAPPY AND MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2005.

It gives me great satisfaction and pleasure to keep you updated on ANA and NECC activities. I am happy to share with you in this note, briefly, what has happened recently and what we are planning to accomplish with your help.

1) ANA CONVENTION 2005

Nepalese Society, Texas is very happy to host ANA convention 2005 in Dallas, Texas. NST has already started its work to make the upcoming event a grand success. We have been communicating with local community members so that we can work together as a solid team and achieve our goals. At this time we are in the process of constituting various sub-committees whose responsibility will be designated for specific sector. Anjan Shrestha and Gouri Joshi have been working hard to find a venue for the convention. Raja Upadhaya from Denver has volunteered to negotiate the deal. Thank you Anjan, Gouri and Raja Babu. A few prospective venues are on our list. We will be finalizing the venue very shortly.

I am so proud to inform you all that NST local and surrounding community is very optimistic and supportive for the convention. Each and everyone want to be a part of it. So there is no doubt in my mind that this convention will be very successful and fruitful. This is the time that we all have to put our differences on a side and join hands together. I personally request all of you to come and join with us and support our community. Lets get it done. Hope to see you all in Dallas July 1-4, 2005.
Also, please see http://www.anaonline.org/conventions/ana2005.php for convention details as they arrive.

2) NRN CONFERENCE IN DOHA (QATAR)

The forthcoming NRN-ICC meeting will be held in the capital of Qatar- Doha from 21 to 23 January 2005. ANA has vast experience of working with NRN communities in the USA and CANADA. It would be really nice if some ANA representative could go to Doha to share your valuable experience with ICC members and other NRNs. In addition to the ICC meeting, a regional conference of NRN organizations of the Middle East is also going to be held during the same time. If you can attend and want to represent ANA, please contact me.

3) NECC STUDY ATTORNEY REPORT

NECC Attorney Russel Warfel - Meyers, Rodbell and Rosenbaum, P.A. ask us to submit the site plan again to PG County for the permit. If people in the surrounding areas of the temple complain again, our attorney will ask why we can not built the temple when the county has granted us permission.
Our attorney tried to call Citizens group several times but they did not reply. We will submit our Building Site Plan to PG County again before we think about moving from there. Let us see what happens.

4) ANA IRAQ FUND

ANA leadership has closed the fund. Please see http://www.anaonline.org/iraq/ for details of contributors.

ANA volunteers have been working hard trying to figure out the most transparent and best way to ensure that 100% of the funds are given to the family members. ANA has secured a commitment from our Life Members in Nepal, Chandi Dhakal (also Vice President -FNCCI), Mirgendra Raj Pandey, Sulav Pant, NRN President Upendra Mahato, Prakash Uprety, Labor Leader Laxman Basnet, HE Minister Prakash Mahat, and many distinguished members of civil society who are willing and ready to help in disbursement of the funds. So far, ANA has decided to use the official record of the government to verify the identity of the victim's family members, but we are still exploring all options regarding disbursement. ANA is strongly committed to its pledge that every penny will directly go to the victim's family members. We will try as hard as possible to ensure that money will go directly to the victims family and not be transferred.

Nepal HMG Government has not be able to verify all victims family as of writing this message according to Royal Nepalese Ambassador H.E. Kedar B.
Shrestha. He wrote a letter to HMG Home Ministry via Foreign Ministry to give us the list. We were told to wait till we received the list. We are waiting and exploring other options.

5) ANA BYLAWS

ANA Bylaws Amendment were due by last ANA Executive on November 13,2004, however due to co-ordinating problem among the Bylaws committee members it is delayed. Dr. Kunjar Sharma, (Chair), Dr. Shailendra Shukla, Dr. Anup Pahari, Dr. Jeet Joshi and Mr. Raja Upadhaya are urged to submit the draft amendment to the ANA membership by the end of January 2005.

6) ANA HOME PAGE

In a massive effort to improve ANAs online communication, a new team of volunteers is working on the ANA home page. An early design is posted at http://www.anaonline.org or at the same address as the previous page http://www.ana-home.org, but it is still in progress. If you have some technical skills and would like to volunteer to help improve the website, please contact us to find out how to help ana@anaonline.org

7) ANA MAILING LIST

Along with the change in the web service, we are in the process of updating our email list. If you would still like to receive this announcement, please email us ana@anaonline.org to be added on the list.
If you do not email us, you will no longer be sent this message. Remember ANA will not sell or distribute your email address to any third party.
PLEASE EMAIL US TO BE ON THIS MAILING LIST.

Lastly, I urge all members, friends to unite and let us solve the needs of ANA. United we can do it, Again, OUR FAMILY WISHES YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONE A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2005.

Thank you and God Bless you,

Krishna Nirola
President ANA

Yatree,

I heard about ANA more than any Nepali communities before coming to USA.
Thats why I tried to get membership of it immediately after I landed here.
their previous home page http://ana-home.org/, now directs to new
website http://www.anaonline.org/ . I am constantly checking its website.
surprisingly, the website has more stuffs in this week or so, as compared to
its entire history.

But, Viv gave me a hint that asked me to move to other websites of other
Nepali communities. Now, I realized the position of ANA as compared to others,
especially, ANMA. Though by name ANA looks more wide, but, by activities
and openness, ANMA looks far ahead. I am attracted by it ANMA's prospectus
and it (ANMA ) really looks great Association of Nepalis. Though I am still
not in inclusion stage, but, I should thank Viv for opening me a new direction
in my research, his peer review surely helps me. Before I land somewhere with
my 50bucks or so, I want to make sure that I will not be disappointed by
its executive members. Frankly, ANA's website still looks dumb with respect
to the numbers of year it has passed. The child born along with ANA are
full grown up adults and citizen, ANA's website does not look full grown
citizen like stuff to get what you need to get as an independent organization,
that is "Transparency", compare it with ANMA, don't make excuse
"not to compare apples and oranges". My purse is fixed to its thickness,
so, I am forced to select either Apple or orange, I don't have luxury of
Apple or oranges not comparable. They are comparable.

Lets see how far can ANA's executive body be transparent before I decide
to be member of a Nepali organization? Or, I start my own? hehehehehe....
because West Virginai does not have its own Nepali community based on
Google Search. We are also thinking to initiate our own society,
America Nepal Society of West Virginia. Image was already drawn
by my friends before I moved to WV. Before we push it to further ahead,
we should better have a good affiliation with some bigger organization
i.e. umbrella, so that ANSWV can be more like a chapter rather than
a separate identity of few dozen or hundred members.

Let me keep on drilling and doing more research.

Thanks for reading it.

Nepali associations should have leaders who are dynemic, visionary and above all moral and ethicle. moral leadership is the key, and ANA should make sure its people in leadrship and who are active have moral standing.

If it gives you any idea, we have NAOO (- http://www.naoo.org), Nepal organization in Ohio. NAOO is the Ohio Chapter of ANMA. NAOO is an independent organization as long as management is concerned, except that it sends financial and activities report to ANMA once a year.

Well, it looks to me that ANA, ANMA and NAC are competing to take
credit for initiation of NRNA and NRN conference. Why should they compete?
If you can convince public that you were prime player in this issue, you
might be considered / recognized as an important umbrella orgnization
of Nepali Nuclear organizations. This can be seen in the report prepared
by Naresh Koirala and comments by others as follows: Let me cite first
the part of Naresh's report that draws conclusion based on Naresh's personal
judgement:

ANA and What it Needs To Do!

ANA is committed to ICC's mission. ICC operates on the basis of country representatives and not association representatives. This makes sense, but will require a legitimate representative country association to work. As a leading organization of Nepalis in North America, ANA must take leadership to bring together Nepali organizations in the country so that they can collectively fulfill ICC's mission. The participation of Kunjarji and Raja Upadhya (the only two North American representatives, both of ANA in the ICC meeting in London) has added to ANA's leadership responsibilities.

NRN's in North America need a representative country organization to fulfill ICC's mission. A fractious group of country representatives do not make a cohesive country group, which can take major decisions. The unfortunate reality is that despite the claims of various Nepali organizations to be the sole representative of all Nepalis in North America, a Nepali Organization, which truly represents the whole of Nepali community, does not exist. The modalities of such united organization must be agreed upon before the next ANA conference in Phoenix, so the united organization can be formally ratified by the ANA conference. This organization should have a separate cell to coordinate all ICC related NRN activities.

The Government and the People of Nepal expect us to actively promote Nepali culture and also market Nepal in our country of domicile. ANA needs to develop a concrete plan to do this and follow it up with action.

Now that NRN issues have come to the public domain in Nepal and we received a tremendous support from the media, we need to work with the media in Nepal and publicize our activities in Nepali media. This is the only way we can hope to continue getting media trust.

We should immediately start working towards production of a skill dossier of Nepali people who are willing to provide their services in Nepal both in the short and the long term.

A strategic planning meeting to collect funds for targeted united Nepali association-approved charity must also be formulated and put into action ASAP.

(with due acknowledgement to ANMA. http://www.anmausa.org/ )

Mr. Sharada Thapa's comments on Mr. Naresh Koirala?s report on the NRN conference

Mr. Sharada Thapa's comments on Mr. Naresh Koiralas report on the NRN conference~

2nd paragraph says:
"I, however, have some serious problems with the way in which the events leading to the Conference, the participation of the organizations in North America and the contributions and efforts of the various players has been described. I have a major disagreement with his interpretation of how best to fulfill the mission of ICC. Practically all of the problems are contained in the section titled "ANA and What It Needs To Do" and I, as the elected country representative for the US in the ICC, would be remiss in letting the report pass uncommented.

It looks to me:

By name alone: ANA looks superior.
By kaam: ANA applied for membership of NAC. ANA did not renew it,
and possibly smelled good to remain away from NAC and pose
a rival orgnization of NAC itself. ANA made a mistake by getting
that one year membership, if it really wants to be rival, but,
the history can not be rewritten. So, only way to ANA to do what
its name represent, is to correct its executive committee's internal
squabbles and make it transparent: those who participate ANA's
national convention: especially FairFax carcaus(?) say that the
key prizes were given to only the relatives and close friends of ANA's
executives members or organizers. This is just one example. The transparency
on exe.com election in ANA is also questionable as it surfaced in previous
election drama. ........ In that perspective NAC and ANMA are far ahead.

I have to keep on reading the news on these Nepali players in NA.

If I were in ANA's executive committe, instead of buying the
odd website name domain names for ANA (past name
http://www.ana-home.org/ and current http://www.anaonline.org/ )
I would have recommended to have http://www.a-n-a.org/ . Well,
three charactered domain name like ana.org was gone long time ago
then we could think of the power of domain names. But, domain like
A-N-A.org is still available and its easier to remember and enter than
the long name ANAONLINE.org . Like abbreviation: ANA, the domain
name a-n-a.org would still be powerful to first time visitors. Its my
personal idea, may be some other peoples have different ideas.
Name matters. Specially, in PR.

There was a recent posting to TND which I found revolting. People can voice their sentiments - political or otherwise - but they should keep in mind that Nepali families across the globe are reading TND on a regular basis and bad language is not acceptable on this platform. TND should not be used as an "electronic spreadshit". One can be critical of political personalities but abusive language is uncalled for.

I have only one thing to say...............
the person who is the president of ANA should be kicked out of ANA........... how in the hell can he preserve our nepalipan in america.... when his only daughther was living with a gora for years before she got married................ this should be the only reason for him to step down............ I thought ANA was here to promot nepali culture and socity... if his daughter is married to a white man what kind of message is he trying to send to our nepali society....
I THINK WE SHOULD RAISE THIS QUESTION IN DALLAS.......

if he can't preserve culture in his own family how in the hell can he preserve culture in our society....... he is unfit...............
