Army choppers shoot Nepali students - media
04 Feb 2005 04:14:41 GMT
Source: Reuters
NEW DELHI, Feb 4 (Reuters) - The Nepali army, under direct control of the king after he sacked the government and assumed power, fired from helicopters at student protesters, wounding at least 15, an Indian newspaper reported on Friday.

It is the first report of violence from the Himalayan kingdom since the king's Feb. 1 move, which has drawn widespread global condemnation.

The Hindustan Times said the shooting took place in the town of Pokhara hours after King Gyanendra fired the prime minister, declared a state of emergency and took charge of the country himself for the next three years.

Immediately after the royal proclamation, students at Pokhara's Prithvi Narayan College came out in protest and prevented soldiers from entering the campus to halt the demonstration, the daily said, quoting unidentified sources in a despatch from Kathmandu.

Held at bay on the ground, the army responded with helicopters, firing at the protesters from the air, it said.

About 15 students were shot and then moved to army barracks rather than hospital, it added.

The detained students were being tortured and it was not known if any had died of their wounds, the daily said, calling the incident Nepal's "own version of Tiananmen Square" after the 1989 Chinese military crackdown in which hundreds were killed in Beijing.

Pokhara, a tourist resort about 200 km (125 miles) west of Kathmandu, is popular for its stunning views of the Himalayas.

"We have information that there was such an incident from very reliable sources," the Hindustan Times report quoted Kedar Prasad Poudyal, secretary of Nepal's National Human Rights Commission, as saying.

Nepal has been largely cut off from the world as Gyanendra has shut down all communications and Internet services and imposed strict media censorship, banning reports critical of the monarch's decisions.

Several political leaders have been placed under house arrest or jailed to prevent street protests against the king.

If he couldn't hide his true colors for more than 2 days how can anyone seriously believe he will hand the country back in 3 years or even lift press censorship in 6 months?

Listen Rein!

When thousands of school children were taking hostages under gun point, what you are doing, are you celebrating? When security personnel were getting gundown by the maoist, are you celebtrating? When all the businesses are going out of the country, and many of them are sutting down due to the thread of the maosit, are you celebrating? before you make such comments as a "devil king" you should think twice. Because you are living thousands miles away in a secured place but many poor innocent people were getting killed by the maoist in collusion with political parties's thugs. How come you dont make any commets about them as "DEVIL".

Sushant - Mowing down unarmed 19 or 20 year old boys and girls is as outrageous as , if not more than, all the other atrocities you list.

Well Mr. Sushant.... first thing you can not protect wrong doing of your hitler king by pointing towards other wrong doing.... if thats the case then whats the difference... why dont we joing maoist then......

as a famous " a wrong deed can not justify other wrong deed"

As far as taking children hostage is concern.;..... I agree maoist took hostage but they never made them stand in line in base of a hill and fire from a top....

no matter how hard you try there is no justification for this deed... your gyane chor is showing his color now...

Any Killing or loss of innocents human life is regrettable. No body is denying that. Since more than a decade continuous killings of innocent people including children and women, security personnel and destruction of properties were going on unabatedly, every body was watching this genocide quietly. No national political parties have ever tried any face saving political solution to stop such mayhem. The people those who are making comments right now never had suggested any other alternatives how to tackle such awful situation. I am really just curious to know, if our learned soul did not like the Devil King?s extreme measure of handling this situation, what exactly they have in mind to overcome such a huge political mess, which even our neighboring country could not have any clue to solve their similar mess? Or, should I conclude from their comments that they are perfectly satisfied with the situation of every day killings by the Maoist and simultaneous ramblings of the inept political leaders, while Nepal keep continue burning.

I just fail to understand why all of us are trying to argue/discuss for or against dark abyss and pit hole.

I sympathize with those students, if the news is indeed true. I fail to understand why just the students seem to protest. Why they are ALWAYS the first one. Should not education and politics be a separate entity within itself, synonym only for constructive education, not for violence and destruction.

Damn these politicians, they are equally responsible for BRAINWASHING these innocent victims of gyane's autocracy.Don't you guys think these politician's hand are equally bloodstained? They put the seed for their own selfish motives. Fawk them and fawk gyane. And ofcourse ROYAL fawk for Moda fawka maoist.

May peace and nous prevail,
Indisguise:)

To those who are clueless as to what is happening in Nepal.

When you read an article please take a step back and find out what the source is. It seems clear to me that media personnel (and some sajha participants) are biased to one side or another and will try to feed you information that suits them.

Reuters published the above article quoting Hindustan Times. Hindustan Times says ..he says?she says?and also quotes Kedar Prasad Poudyal, secretary of Nepal's National Human Rights Commission, who says we have heard something to that effect. This same story was circulating yesterday that said shots were fired. Today they make it more dramatic by adding a helicopter to the scene.

Just to give you an idea on how Nepali media works: A neighbor of a friend entered his home in Nepal and stole some jewelry, the police was called and an investigation was launched. Next day there was an article in 2 local newspapers that read ?Armed Maoists loot so and so?s (my friend?s father?s name) house?.

The King has said he would respect human rights, if not he should know full well that he will be accountable for it. I do find however that closing down communication with Nepal is a blow under the belt, I need to talk to my wife.
