2 in 3 Brits OK Pot & Cocaine

A BBC survey examining British people's attitude to whether wannabe Tory leader David Cameron has used cocaine, has revealed that 66% of Conservative voters said it would make no difference to the issue of whether they vote for him.

Eight of ten voters questioned for the BBC TV Newsnight poll said they were equally nflustered with cannabis use by MPs, reflecting the increasingly tolerant stance adopted by newspaper columnists from the Mirror to the Times.

Sunday Times star writer Minette Marrin identified a generation gap, suggesting 'anyone who knows nothing personally of drugs must seem like a total dinosaur to the younger generation.'

"Taking recreational drugs is not in itself a moral matter," the family values advocate argued, "It has always been one of the greatest pleasures and greatest consolations of humankind, found in all civilisations."

Daily Telegraph young gun columnist Sam Leith enthusiastically agreed, singling out the mid 80s as the cusp of a newly tolerant drugs generation.

"For my own curiosity, I tried making a list of substances I've used that I shouldn't have done and arrived at: speed (amphetamine), dope (marijuana), acid (LSD), ecstasy, MDMA, ketamine, amyl nitrate, cocaine, nitrous oxide, magic mushrooms, temazepam, valium, Salvia Divinorium and khat," he confessed.

"This isn't the pharmacopeia of a determined drug fiend. It's pretty much what you'd expect from an average, middle class drug tourist of my age and circumstances," he said.

Mirror columnist and former punk writer Tony Parsons was equally outspoken sneering 'what kind of squeaky clean, Bible bashing, prissy little puritan could grow up in the second half of the 20th century and not take drugs? Oh yeah, Tony Blair."

Bird Flu Pandemic & Peak Oil's Apocalyptic Threat

The much-heralded arrival of bird flu in Britain could destroy day today normality leaving millions cowering in terror at home, the Daily Mirror predicted this week.

"We are worried that a new pandemic might turn out to be Force 10 on the Richter Scale of new emerging viruses on humans," Health Protection Agency chief virology expert Maria Zambon told the tabloid. "We are concerned it might affect the young adult population and in doing so, bring society to a halt."

Broadsheets newspapers were slightly less alarmist, suggesting public transport and social gatherings being banned with infected victims being confined to quarantined areas at gunpoint, though the Independent's ''what to do if a pandemic strikes' advice suggested the key tip is 'don't panic'.

"Try to minimise contact with other people, get in stocks of food and water and try, as far as possible, to sit out the pandemic," the paper suggested, "The authorities will almost certainly have closed schools and theatres, cancelled sporting fixtures and may restrict transport."

The Sunday Times also highlighted the travel restriction aspect of a pandemic, urging those planning to head for the hills to 'act fast' as soon as the disease takes hold.

"Infected people, and anyone they have been in contact with, will be quarantined. The Times warned, ""The government has the power to throw up cordons round entire neighbourhoods and to police them with armed troops."

Coincidentally the paper ran another apparently unrelated article 'how to survive when the oil runs out' this week predicting that oil shortages could soon reduce standards of living to 'essentially Stone Age conditions'.

"Living without oil, if we don't start to prepare for it, will not be like returning to the late 1700s, because we have lost the infrastructure that made 18th century life possible, " said the Times "We have lost our basic survival skills."

Slam Star Slams Scotland's Violence Epidemic

The United Nations branded Scotland 'the most violent country in the developed world' this week in a report suggesting that almost 2,000 people are seriously assaulted in the country each week.

The ten year study compared violence rates between 21 countries and discovered that serious assaults are almost three times as common in Scotland as America and 30 (thirty) times as likely as in Japan, as well as being up almost 50% since 1995.

"I am embarrassed as a Scot that we are seeing this level of violence," David Ritchie, an accident and emergency consultant at Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary told the Times, "Politicians must do something about this problem. This is a serious public health issue. Violence is a cancer in this part of the world," he said.

Glasgow producer Orde Meikle from Slam and Soma Records described the UN's findings as 'a terrible, shameful statistic' though added 'I can't say I'm surprised'.

"Gang culture seemed to fade away a little in the 90s but in Glasgow it never faded too far and it's really back with a vengeance at the moment. Being part of a gang seems very much to be the cool thing to do," Orde told Skrufff.

"You do hear about a lot of incidents and it always has been a rough old town. I thought during the 90s it had cleaned itself up a little but obviously the UN figures suggest I was wrong. Though having said that, although it may sound bad here, violence is not around you constantly."

Orde admitted, however, that one former Soma executive lost two front teeth in a brawl ('for stepping into a domestic argument between a couple') while another staff member broke his hand in a fight.

"I think everyone in Glasgow has been involved in a fracas at some point or other, it happened to me when I was at school," he admitted.

"I think most people who grow up in Glasgow grow up far more wary of situations and violence, whether in a club or on the street, you've always been aware it has a violent side."

What there is, is a cynical program of political duplicity; the intent of which is not to prevent drug abuse (which it encourages), but to create a climate of distrust, fear, hostility, alienation, divisiveness, and violence within our society . . .')

"Leicester Square at night is the resort of the worst type of women and girls consorting with men of the British and American forces. Of course the Americans are encouraged by these young sluts, many of whom should be serving in the forces. At night the square is apparently given over to vicious debauchery." Denver Legalises Personal Pot (in Principle)

Free thinking Denver citizens voted to legalise personal possession of up to one ounce of pot this week, in a significant though still largely meaningless victory against America's War On Drugs.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper immediately dismissed his voters' wishes as 'a generational thing' telling local newspaper the Rocky Mountain News "if that election had been 20 years ago, it would have been a very different outcome."

"The bottom line is, it doesn't change state law," the bar-owning super-rich Mayor added, "I think it's more symbolic than anything else."

Despite the Denver electorate's democratic wishes, smokers will still face arrest under state laws.

In more drug war news, DEA agents busted the 25-year-old son of Miami police Chief John Timoney this week after allegedly catching him trying to buy 400 pounds of marijuana from an undercover federal agent.

Sean Timoney of Philadelphia was reportedly nicked after handing over a gym bag containing US$450,000 to a plainclothes DEA narc in a Spring Valley hotel room. He remains in custody.

Male Mice Seduce With Songs

American scientists have discovered that male mice looking to get laid serenade prospective lovers, according to reports in this week's British press.

The sex-mad charmers emit complicated subsonic squeaks to impress the ladies, said The Sun, in repeated regular time signatures.

"The richness and diversity of mouse song appears to approach that of many songbirds," said study author Professor Timothy Holy from Washington University, "It's not yet clear whether singing conveys an advantage to male mice during courtship."

The revelations emerged three years after Cambridge Scientists were condemned after carrying out audio experiments on rodents, which involved them injecting 40 mice with methamphetamine and cruelly forcing them to listen to four hours of The Prodigy, at 95 decibels.

During the inhuman attack, the traumatised rave mice reportedly jiggled backwards and forwards and moved their noses from side to side, and seven subsequently died, to the fury of animal rights activists.

"It's disgusting, they should be prosecuted for animal cruelty," Wendy Higgins from the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection told the Guardian at the time. "Why should they get special treatment just because they are scientists?"

How Should You Handle Someone Who Dislikes You?

"When you're unsure about how to treat someone, simply be still inside, relax and let yourself be empty of judgement. Then try to see the ineffable presence behind whatever disguise they're wearing, since everyone wears a mask of some kind or another.

See through to that inner Buddha and you should find that things will tend to work themselves out without your having to do anything much beyond being polite as possible. It's all about relaxing and letting the force of the situation itself guide things, providing you're clear about your intention, that is. And assuming your intention is to generate more harmony than discord in your life, that is what you'll get."

Gay Fruit Fly Fight Intensifies

San Francisco gay rights activist and author Patrick Letellier ridiculed fundamentalist Christian organisation Focus on the Family this week over their response to recent research which revealed that inserting just one male gene in female fruit flies, turned them into fully fledged lesbians.

Focus on the Family spokesman Aaron Atwood reacted angrily to media stories suggesting the findings could indicate the possibility of a gay gene for humans, and published a lengthy tirade in which he outlined the key differences between people and flies.

"Fruit flies don't date, go to bars or go to church," he claimed, "Sexual orientation in fruit flies is not at all the same thing as in human beings. Fruit flies don't have fantasies, wishes, hopes, dreams or any of that."

Patrick Letellier responded with amusement to the Family's diatribe this week, in his heavily syndicated column declaring 'to say that sexual orientation in humans has genetic roots is to remove the ace holding the conservative, anti-gay house of cards in place."

"All I can say is, when the far-right is sternly lecturing us about the emotional life of lesbian fruit flies, you know we're on to something," he added.

The fruit fly study emerged some three years after scientists at Manchester University examining dating habits of English cockroaches discovered that roaches are highly selective about choosing lovers, with age proving to be a key factor in the typical roach's pulling potential.

"Researchers have found that as female cockroaches age, they become less choosy about their mates," The Daily Telegraph reported in 2002.

"Biologists say the same age-related compromise between finding the best mate and making the most of whoever comes along is found in most species, including humans."

Tony Blair's Teenage Fame Fantasy

Fresh revelations about Tony Blair's student days at Oxford University emerged this week, depicting Britain's increasingly erratic PM in his youth as an image-obsessed wannabe rock star with few convictions beyond having Pop Idol style dreams of becoming a celebrity.

The portrait emerged from a series of interviews Channel 4 conducted with his childhood pals and college chums when the young Blair was known by the nickname Miranda and fronted desperate Rolling Stones copy band Ugly Rumours.

"One of the more surprising things that comes out is a picture of Tony Blair as a fame-obsessed student with no interest in politics- although he did crave the limelight," a Channel 4 spokesperson told the Standard.

"There are also some gems, like the fact that he tamed his unruly hair with butter."

The story emerged just three months after the Sunday Times revealed that the notoriously greasy PM's annual blusher bill was almost double the typical cosmetics spend for most British women, reportedly due to his obsession with his image on TV.

"So much of our political information comes from TV that politicians are like movie stars now- image is everything. Blair takes it really seriously, he's like the Tom Cruise of politics," said Sunday Times fashion editor Claudia Croft.

2: Christopher Just: I'm a Disco Dancer (John Tejada Remix) (Gigolo)
"I'm a Disco Dancer" first appeared in 1997 as the fourth release on DJ Hell's then new label Gigolo Records and becoming an anthem on Germany's at the time flourishing techno scene, helping establishing both Just and Gigolo itself.
8 years on, German duo MISC have been reworked it into a dirty acid drenched house track while minimal star John Tejada has transformed it a ridiculously catchy disco ditty that's aural proof that minimal doesn't necessarily mean dull.
"I'm a disco dancer and a sweet romancer, oh yeah," an American robot style sexy girl vocal intones, adding dance floor friendly lines like 'hit me' and 'Move Your Body, Out The Way, Bitch'. Hilarious.
