Martyrs' families honoured [ 2006-5-19 ]

KATHMANDU, May 18: Nepali Janasamparka Samiti-Belgium Thursday honoured the family members of the martyrs of the pro-democracy movement last month.Speaking at the programme CPN (UML) leader Bamdev Gautam said that the honor should not be gauged in terms of money. "We should go ahead on the path shown by the martyrs. We should work towards transforming Nepal into a republic." He also spoke on the need of an alliance with the Maoists to build eight party coalition.

Amik Serchan, the president of Janamorcha Nepal, said that the pro-democracy movement instilled a sense of sacrifice among the people for freedom and national welfare. He added that the sovereignty had been transferred to the people but it would take some time to experience.He also said that the government of the seven party alliance would make arrangement for free education of martyrs? children.Arjun Narsingh KC, the leader of Nepali Congress, said the movement would continue until people?s aspirations were fulfilled. He also stressed on the need to educate the orphans.

Nepali Congress (Democratic) general secretary Prakash Man Singh said that the time had come for the seven political parties to pursue the promise they made during the time of movement. He also said that it was everyone?s duty to honour the martyrs with open heart. CPN (ML) leader C P Mainali said the martyrs would be in bliss only if the government lived up to their dreams. "The interference of the external forces won?t be acceptable,"he added. Prusotum Dhakal, human rights activist, said that the Nepal has been strong politically and legally. He also said that the country should now go towards restructuring the state.

Samsher Giri, father of the martyr Rajan Giri, said that the leaders should pay due respect to the sacrifice of the martyrs. "The martyrs can?t be bought with money." Meanwhile Rs 20,000 was provided each to the families of 21 martyrs of the democratic people?s movement ? 2006 as travel expense from the Prime Minister?s Relief Fund, RSS adds.Home Secretary Umesh Prasad Mainali handed away the amount to the families of the martyrs at a function held at the Ministry of Home today.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary Mainali said that the government has already decided to provide Rs 1 million each to the families of the martyrs as a token of respect and appreciation of the martyrs? sacrifice for the cause of peace and democracy.

The amount will be made available to the families by the concerned District Administration Offices in presence of representatives of different political parties, he said, adding that the present government is working for the management of employment to the families of the martyrs. Amik Sherchan of the People?s Front Nepal and Chairman of All Nepal Janabadi Union Raju Khadka pointed out the need for government to provide more facilities to the families of the martyrs.
