No voices were raised against 'Nepal being a Hindu country ' in any of the peoples movement in Nepal. Then why these bloody politicians decides to amend the constitution to make Nepal a secular state? I am pretty much sure if people were informed that the Jan Andolan would make the country a secular one, the streets of Kathmandu would not have been flooded with people during the Aandolan.. Politicians talk of respecting people's voice. They then do not have the right to amend the constitution to make a decision on the matter that was not voiced by people. There was nothing wrong with Nepal as Hindu country...If we want to change this, there should be referendum for that. Bloody politicians, killers do not deserve any right to decide against people's aspiration. Hinduism basically is not the religion, its a culture. It respects all religions...we never had any religious dispute in the country. When things were going smoothly with that whywas the need for change?

Look livewire sathi, you can beat around the bushes as much as you like ..... but u havenot answered my questions ........... You can call me whatever you like if it pleases you, ..... I don't mind if they do voting on it or keep nepal as hindu nation without voting ??? scared ???? r u crazy ??? I have lived my whole life as a citizen of only hindu nation, what difference will it make if it still remains the same ??? scared are the people like you who are whining abt the issue, when secularism has already been passed ....... r u trying to make me laugh ???? by accusing me to be following Indians ...... who is seeding fundamentalism in Nepal ..... not chinese people I guess ..... You are the voice of Indian fundamentalists, and u are accusing me ??? You give me example of ur type of democracy where countries were made secular by popular demand of majorities. "ur version of democracy ma minorities lay the ground rules on debatable issues." I don't see anyone asking for special treatments here, equal treatment is the born right ra yesko lagi agenda chahincha jasto lagdaina malai, I know what you mean, Ur accusation is unrelated to my point. Reserved seat mageko ho ra agenda banauna lai ??? Give me one good example of ur type of democracy, please include secularism, don't just beat around bushes.

ofcourse i will give u an example of this dude... us attacked iraq. most people supported the war so did bush. there was an election bush won. his opposite kerry who opposed the war and lost the election. now recently, war did not go well. majority of people disapproved the war as a result the republican party, that is seen as the one the supports the war lost. democratic party that is seen as the one opposing the war won a lot of seats in both, the upperhouse, senat, and lower house, house of representatives. ofcourse there are countless examples of majoirty setting up the agenda and their agenda getting pushed. jassus ji, don't put words in my mouth i have never asked nepal to go back to a hindu state. i am just questioning a political decision in democracy that did not include the voice of all nepalis. i am glad that there is a secular nepal. but can i say the same for the rest? can you? with regards to other democracies.. they had to become secular because they carried a baggage of religious hatred... german nazis or indian communal violence... europe thruout its history has seen religious war.. so there was a need for secularism.. in nepal there is no such baggage...we don't even have hindu laws.. we used to have one gai mareko law.. that could have been taken out.. only other thing is the king.. the king is regarded the head of the hindu state.. he was considered a god.. but he is on his way out too.. so what is wrong with nepal being hindu nation? how does that exclude other minorities? Buddha jayanti ma national holiday kahile thiyena? ki muslim haru nepal ma aauna darauchan? ki christian missionaries haru were percecuted? when were they excluded.. feri secular nation hudai ma hindu haru dasai namaune haina.. sabai festivities rokine haina? so why all the fuss? sure secularism is a great idea.. because at the end of the day secular hudai ma hindu culture ta finish hune haina.. instead secularism is an all inclusive gesture... i am for it dude but are MOST nepalese on the same page? furthermore, jassus by ur own account u said u were confused.. and u are pointing fingers to me making all these wild accusations that i am a voice of fundamentalist bla ba.. on the previous post u were pointing out to india, the largest secular democracy to prove ur point... now u are distancing urself from india.. what are u? a politician? once again what do MOST nepalis want? not just a FEW.. not just a few politicians for political reasons..

Raised in a Hindu family myself, and with much respects to Hinduism, I am kind of curious to know what would our Hindu brothers here think if I borrow their logical notion to say: Nepal must be a Buddhist nation because the Buddha was born in Nepal. Why Hinduism? Just because it has been Hindu nation for ages? What is wrong with secular nation? Hindus can just have as much freedom as Nepal was in otherwise Hindu nation. And, with the same token if you say, minority religions had same freedom regardless of it being Hindu nation (before it was announced secular nation), I will repeat the same question, "Nepal must be a Buddhist nation because our Buddha was born here." And what is majority? "Greatest good for greatest people"? Ruling with 51 votes out of 100 votes is an old system. Even in the past when some bills were passed there needed to be 2/3 of the votes.

. re: "what nepal had was true secularism" "Would you rathere prefer with buddist philosophy that no lives are lost due to religion war or would you prefer to be live in harmony where you have freedom of religion, you were getting religious holidays , i don't know any incident that buddist or any religion being discrimanated for the sole reason of religion in old nepal(what ever!!!)" was eid a public holiday? was christmas? were atheists allowed to slaughter cows? " You guys are right but what you need to realize is do you want secularism for name sake or in practical. What Nepal had before was true secularism. No extreme hindus , now unnecessarily you touch the sensitive issue that to forcefully impose in the people they things will go wrong. And you know it will. " wow. how tolerant of you. and youre right. there were no extreme hindus. clearly, you are not one of those shiva sena types. you have the spirit of mother teresa in you. man of peace, just like nathuram godse dont go on harping about true secularism when you have no idea what it means

livewire, looking at the way u write, u look more like a politician to me. India, being the largest democracy in the world, I used her just for an example to tell you how decision is made in democratic country, I have used US too in my previous threads you never picked it up ...... u only picked India and accused me to be following Indians. I was asking for an example concerning basic rights like religion, color, caste and u came up with an example of war. So if I follow ur type of democracy ...... do we need to go thro agendas for equal treatment for all castes too ??? What difference is there between issues like caste, religion, color ??? These all come into basic rights for me. In your own example, if secularism can be a remedy of religious violence in India and German, how can it again be the source of chaos in nepalese context ??? I really admire ur crafty writing technique, you picked a word "confused" out of the whole sentence and trying to make myself believe that I am typing all these out of confusion and frustration. Please read it again. "I am not, I am newar and as most of the newar I am confused between two religions. I pactice both, won't deny I may be more lenient towards Buddhism ...... but I celebrate more hindu festivals than buddhist. Don't get me wrong, I am just speaking my conscience." what did you understand out of it ??? Did I mean I am confused of the secularism issue ??? Let me explain in simple language so that you won't pick any words out of it and use against me." Hinduism and Buddhism is like my father and mother, I may have more affetion to one, but I cannot choose one out of them " thats what I meant and above that secularism is not about hinduism and buddhism only, It involves every known and unknown religions, I just believe they should not be represented under others identity. Who do you think is making a fuss here ??? Me ??? Do you think I started the thread ??? It may not be you but A guy who thinks like you started this thread. The decision of secularism has been made, if u were true supporter of secularism, you wouldnot have come up with complains, coz u still have hope if this would have gone thro popular vote, you could have retained hindu status of the country. Silence speaks louder than voice ........ you don't need to cry out loud for me to understand that u favor hinduism, if u were in favor of secularism, you would not have been discussing with me, trying to prove how confused I am. Get out of the box and try to think being Human.

It may have been done with political interest but truth is always truth in every form. People were happy before secularism, but since the issue of right have been raised we cannot deny it. There are still bonded labors in some parts of Nepal, its ok until the voice doesnot rise against it, if it does ...... right shouldnot be denied, shouldnot be asked to go thro referendum. thats all I believe.

IMI, I know you’re present here in Sajha 24/7 and very popular. You ‘re asking me: do you want this and do you want that???? Secular or non secular??? WTF……When did we ask for a secular state? Answer this. When did Buddhist ask for it? The date and time, if you got some picture, links of our demonstration, protest, meetings of our leaders that will be great. I’ll shut up then. Please don’t give a long detail answer to the question. When I ask you “What is your name?†and you answer “I live in Nepal†is not an answer, it’s someone who doesn’t listen, think they’re always right. If we didn’t ask for it, why in the hell are we getting blamed. That’s my whole point. Agree? Now the question about extremist coming to Nepal, war, killing , well I really don’t give a damn. You started the shit, you clean it. Kill each other…hell do anything you want. Just leave us alone.

haha..Vootee..Thanks for scarastic words..I do spend some time in sajah everyday. What is there to hide. In your words i feel frustration ..It is ok my friend .You do not give a damn ..hmm..interesting ..well it is your point of thinking thats fine. When did buddist wanted secular country?hmm not very strongly.I never really accussed any religious group of asking for secular country. Ok To who ever this guy is : le chef de nuit, Dude..Does India have public holiday in Ed?Does USAhave Public Holiday in Diwali ? dude know what you are talking kid!!! Does Athesit are allowed to eat cow? Very interesting...looks like beef fan out here. So, you want secular Nepal to eat beef .Why don't you wait some more time in Nepal you will be able to eat human beings too.The dead ones in riots. Do not teach me secularism !!I know what it means i believe in practice .And what do you call if it was not secular .A church in every village in Nepal. A mosque in every village in Nepal .A mosque in the HINDU KINGDOM CAPITAL!!!find a temple in and other country beside India which is has a temple as big as that mosque? What do you say when Hindu and Buddist live in Peace and harmony. What do you say when a muslim does bhai tika . what do you say when i go to church?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i will talk about true Hindu - country later .if we had followed that we wouldn't be in this state. As Birbhadar said , Hindu country is no more there it is gone .Well, fine but I will never stop saying that it was incorrect decision without proper analysis and vision. Moreover , That is not the right process to do it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

let people decide jassus not u and me... not all people are happy about this secular state of being. and we don't know what the number is. nice job trying to portry me as a hindu fundamentalist. i was and i am still merely asking a question. what do the people of nepal think? majority of whom are Hindus. let democracy work in its basic model.. of the people for the people by the people. there is room for hindu-democratic nepal just as there is a scope for secular-democratic nepal. Jaasus what is wrong in letting people decide? why are u afraid of the people? u are definitely not for dictatorship. you just want democracy where u find it convineint. You are propogating a democratic system that refuses to hear the voices of people on certain issues- a discriminatory system. The hindu system does not have to be discriminatory. we can have anti-descrimination law to counter the "hindu" discrimination concerns. the two can coexist. ofcouse, secular system can work as well. But let all sides come front and let the people be the ultimate decider. Netas can make sure system is fair to all. But leave the decision making to the people. how many people, one more time???? how many agree/disagree? I have never proposed discriminations based on caste and religion so let us not go where we have not gone so far. Nepal is already a secular country because of politics, not because of Nepalese themselves. I know ur view point jassus. I am not too sure about the rest of Nepal. Not convinced about 40% either. If nepalese want nepal to be secular. great. i am all up for it. separation of religion and state is great. but if they want nepal to be hindu kingdom, so be it. if all agreed on this secular idea there would be no commotion. the fact that people are discontent is making all this noise. the question is how many people are discontent? that is democracy.. it works in freedom and in numbers. why are u afraid jassus why are u afraid to throw the ball to the peoples' side? why are u hiding behind a legislation that was passed by some? if nepalese want hindu-nation, lets go for it, if secularism is the answer so be it. But people please.. people

livewire, I do not know you personally, so I have no right to project you as of anyform. Sorry if I have made you feel that I knowingly or unknowingly tried to portrary you as a fundamentalist. I am supporting Secularism NOT because I am afraid that the country will return to Hinduism. Personally, I am Buddhist raised in Hindu tradition, I have nothing to lose. It is not that Nepal is going to develop in one night if she becomes secular, but one thing is for sure, if we return to Hinduism, it will send the strong message that the harmony and tolerance that we believed existed between people of all faiths was nothing but a lie. Nepal shouldnot have been made Secular at this sensitive phase, that was the first mistake that politicians made, and returning back to Hinduism will be the second mistake that people will make. Nothing will happen, it will be what it was few months back ....... but the scar will always remain. The whole cycle will be nothing but the TEST how tolerant hindus are.

People have been making their own speculations about the percentage of 'hindus' and 'non-hindus' among various ethnic groups in Nepal. Many have claimed that Newars are predominantly buddhists (without any resonable grounds). I think that the following detailed data will clear up any false and baseless ideas (which many of us are erroneously claiming to be the real picture). Census 2001 The percentage of Hindus in various Nepali ethnic groups are given below(Source: 2001 Census). NEPAL TOTAL HINDUS Hindu% TOTAL 22736934 18330121 80.62% CHHETRI 3593496 3574976 99.48% BHAHMAN-HILL 2896477 2887317 99.68% MAGAR 1622421 1210276 74.60% THARU 1533879 1497516 97.63% TAMANG 1282304 98593 7.69% NEWAR 1245232 1141118 91.63% MUSLIM 971056 0 0% KAMI 895954 866296 96.69% YADAV 895423 893427 99.78% RAI 635151 133803 21.06% GURUNG 543571 131263 24.15% DAMAI/DHOLI 390305 381739 97.81% LIMBU 359379 30675 8.53% THAKURI 334120 332107 99.40% SARKI 318989 312277 97.90% TELI 304536 302056 99.19% HARIJAN 269661 266568 98.85% KOIRI 251274 250705 99.77% KURMI 212842 212493 99.84% SANYASI 199127 197554 99.21% DHANUK 188150 187680 99.75% MUSAHAR 172434 169884 98.52% DUSADH 158525 157682 99.47% SHERPA 154622 4683 3.02% SONAR 145088 142482 98.20% KEWAT 136953 136371 99.58% BRAHMAN-TARAI 134496 133932 99.58% BANIYA 126971 126108 99.32% GHARTI/BHUJEL 117568 113458 96.50% MALLAH 115986 114980 99.13% KALWAR 115606 115252 99.69% KUMAL 99389 97818 98.42% HAJAM/THAKUR 98169 97768 99.59% KANU 95826 95718 99.89% RAJBANSI 95812 81580 85.15% SUNUWAR 95254 75726 79.50% SUDHI 89846 89554 99.67% LOHAR 82637 82454 99.78% TATMA 76512 76351 99.79% KHATWE 74972 74561 99.45% DHOBI 73413 73011 99.45% MAHJI 72614 59302 81.67% NUNIYA 66873 66433 99.34% KUMHAR 54413 53972 99.19% DANUWAR 53229 52833 99.26% CHEPANG 52237 36685 70.23% HALUWAI 50583 50268 99.38% RAJPUT 48454 48126 99.32% KAYASTHA 46071 45556 98.88% BADHAE 45975 45756 99.52% MARWADI 43971 41718 94.88% SANTHAL/SATTAR 42698 35463 83.06% JHAGAR/DHAGAR 41764 38752 92.79% BANTAR 35839 35069 97.85% BARAE 35434 35398 99.90% KAHAR 34531 34491 99.88% GANGAI 31318 30830 98.44% LODHA 24738 24693 99.82% RAJBHAR 24263 24119 99.41% THAMI 22999 12819 55.74% DHIMAL 19537 11216 57.41% BHOTE 19261 300 1.56% BING/BINDA 18720 18697 99.88% BHEDIYAR 17729 17675 99.70% NURANG 17522 17267 98.54% YAKKHA 17003 2410 14.17% DARAI 14859 14546 97.89% TAJPURIYA 13250 8500 64.15% THAKALI 12973 4389 33.83% CHIDIMAR 12296 12209 99.29% PAHARI 11505 9077 78.90% MALI 11390 11365 99.78% BANGALI 9860 9566 97.02% CHANTEL 9814 3021 30.78% DOM 8931 8863 99.24% KAMAR 8761 8586 98.00% BOTE 7969 7855 98.57% BRAHMU 7383 5319 72.04% GAINE 5887 5711 97.01% JIREL 5316 561 10.55% ADIBASI 5259 5056 96.14% DURA 5169 979 18.94% CHURAUTE 4893 0 0% BADI 4442 4390 98.83% MECHE 3763 3021 80.28% LEPCHA 3660 279 7.62% HALKHOR 3621 3597 99.34% PUNJABI/SIKH 3054 2464 80.68% KISAN 2876 2750 95.62% RAJI 2399 2119 88.33% BYANGSI 2103 2062 98.05% YAYU 1821 1280 70.29% KOCHE 1429 1397 97.76% DHUNIA 1231 1146 93.10% WALUNG 1148 946 82.40% JAINE 1015 357 35.17% MUNDA 660 521 78.94% RAUTE 658 548 83.28% YEHLMO 579 9 1.55% PATHARKATTA 552 551 99.82% KUSUNDA 164 160 97.56% OTHER DALIT 173401 169662 97.84% OTHER CASTE 231641 209499 90.44%

The overall summary showing the percentages of major religions in Nepal is available on the site of National Planning commission, npc.gov.np. However, this detailed data showing the percentage of hindus in each ethnic group can be obtained from the "National Census of Nepal 2001 CD" which was produced by the Central Bureau of Statistics of His Majesty's Government of Nepal. The source of the aforementioned data is the same CD. It can be clearly seen that the percentage of hindus in some ethnic groups is very low. Only 7.69% of TAMANGS, 3.02% of SHERPAS, 21.06% of RAIS, 8.53% of LIMBUS and 24.51% of GURUNGS are HINDUS. Among these, only the TAMANGS form a sizeable ethnic minority. However this is not true for the NEWARS. 91.63% of the NEWARS are hindus, which is a very significant majority.
