i go to school in Ca for the past 2yrs and have been getting the 1098 from school. anybody know if int'l students have to/can file a tax return????

If you are earning (bank interest, scholarship, assistantship etc) then you HAVE to file tax-including international student.

As far i know 1098 are for Hope Credit, and the Lifetime Learning Credit, which only US citizen can file for not us. Every International student have to file 8843 whether you work or not. But if you work you have to file also federal 1040 NR and your state form too. There is an information with few example to file at University of Texas web site http://www.utexas.edu/international/taxes/status.html Hope this information help you.
