काठमाडौं, वैशाख २ - नेपालमा आधिकारिक रूपमा टोयोटाको कार भित्रिएको शनिबार ४० वर्षपुगेको छ तर यो समाचार क्यानाडाको हो ।
त्यहा“को अल्बर्टर्ाााज्यमा अचेल एउटा टोयोटा कोरोल्ला गुड्छ जसको पछाडिको नम्बर प्लेटमा अंग्रेजीमा 'नेपाल' लेखिएको हुन्छ । चालक सिटमा महादेवटार, काठमाडौंकी सुजाता पौडेल हुन्छिन् । उनलाई एडमन्टन सहरका सडकमा गाडी चलाउने अन्यले हल्का हर्न बजाएर उक्त प्लेट मन परेको संकेत गर्छन् ।

दर्ुइ वर्षघि गंगालाल हृदयरोग केन्द्र छाडेर क्यानाडा पुगेपछि हालै अल्बर्टर्ााटेट हस्पिटलमा काम थालेकी यी २६ वर्षो स्टाफ नर्सले स्वदेशको प्रचार गर्न यो उपाय अपनाएकी हुन् । 'नजिकै आएर तिमी नेपालबाट आएकी हौं - भन्दै सोध्छन्,' इमेल वार्तामा सुजाताले कान्तिपुरस“ग भनिन्- 'त्यतिबेला 'हो' भन्दा गौरवान्वित हुन्छु । कसै-कसैले नेपालबारे सोध्छन् ।'

हस्पिटलमा उनको नेपाल प्लेट देखेपछि प्रभावित एक डाक्टरले आगामी 'तलबी बिदा' मा नेपाल आउने निर्ण्र्ाागरेका छन् ।

अमेरिकाका ५० र क्यानाडाका नौ राज्यले गाडीधनीलाई उनीहरूको डिजाइनको नम्बर प्लेट प्रयोग गर्न दिन्छन् । त्यस्तो प्लेट चालकले आफैं बनाउन पाउ“दैनन् । 'गाडीधनीले चाहेअनुसार सरकारले प्रिन्ट गरिदिन्छ,' अमेरिकाको टेक्सासदेखि क्यानाडाको अल्बर्टर्ााम कामको सिलसिलामा भ्रमण गरिरहने सुजाताका साथी प्रकाश पौडेलले भने- 'त्यो नक्कल हुन नपाओस् भनेर सुरक्षण विधि अपनाइएको हुन्छ । एउटा शब्द एउटा प्लेटमा मात्र प्रयोग गर्न पाइन्छ ।'

नक्कल गरे गैरकानुनी ठहरिन्छ । प्लेटमा गाडीधनीले चाहेको अक्षरबाहेक राज्यको नाम -अल्बर्टर्ाा चिह्न -गुलाब), मन्त्र -वाइल्ट रोज कन्ट्री) लेखिएको हुन्छ । विशेष शब्द या अक्षरहरूको अनुरोध नभए सरकारले सामान्यतः तीन अक्षर, ड्यास र तीन अंक -एबीसी-७८९) दिन्छ ।

'नेपाल' शब्द सुजाताले मात्र प्रयोग गर्न पाउ“छिन् तर नेपाली, एभरेस्ट या लुम्बिनीजस्ता शब्द सम्भवतः प्रयोगमा आएका छैनन् । अमेरिका र क्यानाडामा रहेका अन्य नेपालीलाई आफ्नो परिचय झल्काउने शब्द प्रयोगमा प्रोत्साहित गर्न खोजेको सुजाताले बताइन् । त्यस्तो प्लेट बनाउन अमेरिकामा एक सय डलर र क्यानाडामा त्यहींको दर्ुइ सय डलरजति पर्छ ।

अल्बर्टर्ाा करिब दर्ुइ सय नेपाली छन् र त्यहा“ उनीहरूले नेपाली समाज स्थापना गरेका छन् । करिब १५ नेपाली परिवार आफ्नै घरमा बस्छन् भने बा“की भाडामा । कार चलाउन रुचाउने नर्सले हालैको बिदामा पश्चिमी अमेरिकी राज्य क्यालिफोर्नियाको लङ वीचदेखि पर्ूर्वी राज्य भर्जिनियासम्मको सात हजार दर्ुइ सय किलोमिटर पार गरिन् । 'यो प्लेटले मलाई अन्य नेपालीस“ग चिनाजानी गराएको छ,' उनले

भनिन् । प्रकाशका अनुसार टेक्सासमा केही नेपालीले प्लेटमा 'पोखरा', 'काठमाडौं' जस्ता शब्द लेखेका छन् । आफ्नो गाडीको प्लेट न हो, लेख्न के पाइ“दैन । त्यसैले कतिपय अमेरिकी सहरमा राष्ट्रपति जर्ज डब्लू बुसप्रति कटाक्ष गर्ने सन्देश लेखिएका कारहरूसमेत दौडिन्छन् ।

whats new? I can't believe this is big news when its so friggin common in NY. A few plates here: NEPAL (the owner of Yak), GURKHAS (some gurung kid), EVEREST (a sherpa dai), etc....Much ado about nothing, really!!

dyammm why do i think so negative... but i couldn't help asking, why did she immigrated to canada as a Nurse if she was such a Nepal -loving Nurse back in Nepal? she is needed more in Nepal than in canada... Nepal already have lower number of docs and nurses...

What a big news? come to D/FW area and you can see plenty of NEPAL...NEPAL1...NEPAL2 etc License plate.

hahaha God I didnt see this and I can't believe it!!! What a great news and what a ridiculous and pathetic standards of Nepalese journalism. Anything related to the U.S./Canada or anywhere else is so highly regarded. My license plate says Nepal as well and I paid 20 bucks for it so I wonder where the hell did the reporter come to draw the conclusion that it takes 100-200 bucks to get a private number plate. Why is this such a BIG issue? What is so special about that lady driving a car with Nepal in her license number?
It happens only in Nepal and everytime I read anything like this, I just want to smash the walls in frustration and embarassment. I still remember famous quotes and sayings when I was back in Nepal " America ma pani paryo bhane Nepal ma chata odhna ber lagaundainan nepali haru" during the days when birdflu cases were pretty high.
