I sometimes ago ran into a foreigner working with IMF. He said some nice words about Anita Tuladhar who was working with IMF. Since it is rare to find a Nepali female working in top institution (as scholar, since she seemed to have published article in American Economic Review, apparently the best journal in her field), I became a bit of curious.

Anyone knows who she is, whether she is America born or tai baata aaeko, which school she went to. Nothing more than just out of curiosity. Of course, there are others in IMF also, but she seemed to be ahead of others in her intelligence.

STALKER

She is originally from Ktm, did her undergrad in UPenn and Ph.D in Econ from NYU. Back then, she was married with 2 kids (maybe more now) and all the faculty had only good things to say of her. A great person/teacher and a friend. I'm glad she's making all of us Nepalis proud.

From what I vaguely remember from some years ago,
AKT's AER article was a part of a conference proceeding
on some macroeconomic model.

anyone who is looking for anita tuladhar can find out that imf address, can't they? all he has to do is google the name, (I just did, and clicked on the first link that came up. And I got the email address right there!!)

I was just curious to know whether she was from Nepal originally or grew up here. I had never heard of her, while aire gaire naththu khaire go to Nepal and get published about themselves in magazines doing a lot of furtifarti about them. (for example, a movie star told a newspaper back home that he even got offers from Hollywood or some TV company during his stay here! and when someone got into a graduate program of engineering in a top 30 school, his father went around telling about him, and got that stuff published in Kantipur! being an avid reader of nepali patrapatrika, I was surprised that this lady was never a talk of town. Or at least, I never knew she was.)

There are quiet a few Nepalese holding good position in international organizations at comparatively young age, they usually dont come forward for the sake of advertisement. I know at least 10 of them.

actually, just because someone works at international organization doesn't mean he is a big shot. There are, as you said, a lot of those kids out there. But when they stand out, that is when we notice them. People stand out by publishing at the best peer reviewed journal, for sure.

Those who are not coming out advertising themselves are doing appropriate thing. All jobs are just that--jobs, unless you transcend the territory of your job, and make influence, or unless you ace the profession. Only stupids go out saying "I work for this organization, I earn in six digits and oh, I am so good looking". A lot of international organization jobs are actually pretty boring, useless, and people prefer faculty positions to them. (except some research wings of some international organizations)

A lot of Nepali have made big bucks, are working on international organizations, own hotel, businesses, restaurants, are millionaires, and it is good if they shut up (unless they are uber rich like Dr Mahato who counts presidents as his friend) rather than going out, thumping their chest like guerilla, advertising about how many cars they own or what boat they own. When they do something good, people will find out. haina ra? For example, see I found out by Anita Tuladhar (although it doesn't seem she has actually published alot, however) without her or her family telling me about her.

I would NOT generalize it like that.

It really depends on what YOU want to do with your life
and career.

If you want a cushy, secure sinecure -- sure, the work may be boring (a lot of it is paper shuffling in various forms anyway!), but at least, the job offers stability and security and more-than-enough creature comforts.

There are many people who are more than happy doing jobs that offer them stability and security and prestige (the latter is especially important in prestige-starved urban Nepali societies.)

Not everyone wants to be professor churning out so-called peer reviewed journal papers on obscure topics that get read by fewer than 7 people!

Nothing wrong with NOT setting the world on fire, and just taking care of your family by doing decent work.

But if you want something more -- like putting yourself
on a likely path to a be a VP or a Director or a Country Manager/Head, then, the work cannot/must not be boring. You have to find ways to make the work interesting to you, and to your organization, and there are many who do just this, despite setbacks and problems.

So I would NOT judge international organizations for being this or being that.

I would instead judge the (positive) ambition of individuals within them, and what they want to do with their lives and careers.

Just sharing opinions; and carrying the conversation forward, while sipping chiya and enjoying the rains :-)

Dear Mr. Pire.

That’s the basics of life what you are telling, someone likes something some other likes other things. Life would be quiet difficult and boring if everyone on earth find same thing interesting isn’t it? And personal interests and perceptions also changes with time isn’t it? In different phase of life we like or dislike many things and finally nothing lasts forever. I didn’t realize that my simple statement of fact could invite that type of response. But, if you excuse me, I have to say once again what you said is basic facts of life I thought you are into something more serious.
Look at Bill Gates after becoming world’s richest man for 10 years in a row, realized that making money is not that important and is trying to spend most of his time in his foundation. Second richest man Warren Buffet even doesn’t care about, he donated most of his fortunes to Gates foundation. He is not even interested to highlight his own foundation. Different ppl have different taste so it is not the subject of discussion or do we still need to prove that?
Counting President as a friend may look like big thing to you on my side that has no importance. You are happy that you found out one Nepali has published one paper (as a Nepali I am also happy) but at the same time I know one Nepali lady who has published 12 papers in international Journal, she is well known in three different developed country (by the way she studied only in Nepal) got all the Medals in her subject for the academic year she was attending, her PhD thesis was published as a book by an European publisher but she preferred to stay low profile, her choice. Whether it is academic or economical quiet a few Nepalese have established themselves. Someday someone finds them and comes to Sajha. Now, please don’t think that I am boasting by saying I know this person or that person that is not my intention, I just wanted to share some facts that I know.

And you said “only stupid go out saying "I work for this organization, I earn in six digits.” If a guy/gal is self made, without any political connection and relatives blessings and achieved all that what’s wrong in saying that? A person is not allowed to be proud of his hard work? A person is just describing his/her hard work and achievements, does that hearts you? Take it easy.

I got pretty much hammering here:)

my view is that there is some social value of being modest. In our country, however, it seems at least a section of society has preferred to boast about the wrong thing, something that is not necessarily 'boastable'. Of course, everyone is proud of the calling he is involved, but shouldn't faleko brikshako hango stoop a bit?
