Hi Friends,
My opt got over on May 20. I had applied for h1b on last april. I joined master's to bridge gap until oct 1. I hadn't sent my new i20 for master's when i applied for h1b coz' i was in opt that time. I got approval notice on June with change in status from Oct 1. But today, Oct 1, when i went to my international student office, my SEVIS doesn't show the change in status. I am wondering when will my sevis system shows change in status. Is is usual? I am wondering whether I am in F1 or H1b right now because my SEVIS doesn't reflect change in status.

please advise. you suggest will a great help for me.

It seems you didnt apply for change of status. Infact if you file H1B on April with opt ending on May, you cannt file change of status at that time. Did you apply for change of status after you got I20? If not you are still in F1. In such case you should leave the country and enter with H1B by getting H1 visa stamp. This what I see from your explanation. To make matter clear, talk with your attroney who filed your H1B. He/She knows better.

When I apply for H1B, I didnt apply for change of status. I got the approval notice which says I 797 B. You have I 797 A, it seems you changed your "change of status" too. Your F1 status should be terminated by Oct 1. Better ask your lawyer and then talk with your international student adviser. May be some sajha friends can give more light. Best of luck!

If I understood your email correctly the SEVIS system has no connections with H-1B status meaning SEVIS is only for F-1 and J-1 visa categories. The change of status to H-1B will not be reflected in SEVIS. The SEVIS will automatically terminate your status after the 60 days grace period of your I-20 or your inernational officer will have to manually end your program. Since you have your new I-94 as of 10/1 your status will be H-1B from that date.

One more thing. As per Nepalean's email you also need to find out whether a change of staus was filed or not!

H-1B petition has an option which changes the status of the applicant if chosen on Form I-129 page 1.
You are considered under H-1B only starting from October 1. Your status is deemed changed. Dont forget to shoot a free email to the lawyer from your H1B filing company.
