Hi friends,
I am an international student holding active I-20 (valid till 2011) from Minnesota but currently involved in clinical internship (as a student intern) in Colorado. Since I have my driver license from Colorado (active till Nov 2008) and I am in Colorado now, I tried to renew it from Colorado but, the DMV official do not want to renew it. Their saying is that I should go to the same state (Minnesota) where my university located. I tried to renew it online, but the system does not accepts. Please, share your experience/idea to resolve this problem.
Do I really have to travel 1500 miles to get my license renewed?
Thank you.

No. you dont. I had similar situation and I was able to renew my licence from the second state (CO in your case). Just go to DMV with your I-20, take the test and then renew it. As simple as that. Sparrow

Thank you for your reply.
But I could not! I tried in two different DMV offices. Both are not willing to renew it. They argue that I have to go back to Minnesota, there is no way. I do not knw if the rule depends on state.
In case of CO, I am not able to renew it.

How did you get your driver lisence from colorado in the first place. Since your I-20 is for Minnesota?
ask your clinic if they can help, may be they will write a letter or some kind of proof that you are doing internship there.
Hope this will help.

Thanks for your idea. I will try work on that way too.
Well, if this will help to figure out a way to resolve my problem, here is my story. I attended university in Colorado and graduated. Later, I joined graduate program in MN but still had my CO liscence valid so didn`t try to renew it. Now, came back to CO for clinical internship.

If you are on internship, you probably have the last page of your I20 which says why you are legally staying in CO. You also need to have a postal address in CO. If that isn't sufficient for them, you need to ask a letter from International Office if your MN University stating that you are in CO for internship and will be there for this many months and hence needs a liscence.

I am in same situation too. I have a DL from CO and I am doing Graduate studies in Minneapolis. My DL is expiring on 31 of Dec. I heard that from my current I-20, I can not renew my DL in Denver.
