I too want to know little more about credit history. I have heard about it but don't know exactly what does it mean. As I'm about to open a back account, I need more in detail. Can anyone tell me why do we need to build credit history?

Now that's really helpful for beginners! I wish i'd have known the cons about not having an excellent credit score when i started my credit history... anyways, I also suggest the beginners as the earlier dude did, "Stay out of spending, when you don't have to"..
I've a question though for the gurus, wut if I closed my credit card account? How long does it take to get away from my credit file? Having 2-3 closed credit accounts really impact ur credit for a long run? ...insights on this matter from the gurus will be appreciated!

for hit.the.hot
yes it does affect your history in long run. It used to be almost 5 years, for the record to get off of your file, but they now have changed it to 7 years to totally clear of from the file. The best thing that you can do is, try repaying off the minimum dues than to canceling it, till you can figure out something else to repay the debt. by closing the account, you are giving them the chance to, have your record pulled out sooner and start selling your debt to the collection agencies, who will then put some extra % in your debt and than they will start sending you the bills and notices for payment.
About you 2-3 closed credit account. Is that the account you have already paid off or You still need to pay and you have already closed it. can you please clarify it.

Anyway, our suggestion for you is trying to find some way to repay the debt, till than paying off at least the minimum dues that you have been provided from the creditors.
Good luck for your future.

Try it From State Farm Credit card or Bank Of America, these are the best one to apply as a beginner. As I have experienced from both of the creditors, it is easily approved with certain credit limit. Usually, For beginners, they consider certain credit score and all other stuffs required to apply for the credit cards, Social Security is must. And make sure to apply the student's Visa platinum, with reward. Makes life easy and, it gives you the lowest apr after a year. but for one year its no APR.
The next option to start your credit is, try applying at best buy, which gives you different financing options and its without APR, until certain months that you will be paying off the finance for certain goods, like PSP or Laptops. Next best one is Barclaycard Financing Visa Card, usually found in Apple Store. Try these if this is your first Credit card ever.
Remeber: If from Bank than: 1. State Farm Student's Platinum Credit Card
    2. Bank Of America Visa Platinum Reward Card.
        If from financing company then:
    1. Best Buy.
    2. Barclaycard Financing Visa Card

Hope This Might be more clear and Helpful for You.

Good luck for your future.

Yesai ta Furke, jhan CCard paye pachi kati furkine ho?

Try to get  your first credit card from the bank where you have your checking/savings account. Although, they say credit and debit are two separate accounts, the chances of getting approved for a credit card from your primary bank is comparatively higher.

- Stable income and job are important criteria for eligibility.
-Make sure you have paid all bills on time, have a good payment record (car, cell phone etc.)
-Your starting limit will be $300-$1000.
- Always choose the one with $0 Annual fee, APR does not matter as you wont be able to spend much on your initial card due to limit restriction. APR will obviously be around 30 % when you first get your card, which can go down with your timely payment and good usage.
- Its hard to find the 1st card with Rewards. American express has good rewards/ cash back programs, but you gotta have some credit history and a good score to be approved.
-All credit card builds score when paid on time. If you miss the payment, nothing can get worse.
- Make sure you only use 40-50% of your limit on the card and always pay $1 more than the minimum payment.
-Try to use a credit card at least once a year, some cards might charge you an annual fee if not used within a year.

I'm re-phrasing my question again for some gurus:
Given that I paid my balance in full, and close my credit card account; how long does it take to get rid of the bank info from my credit file? Having 2-3 closed credit accounts, all paid in full, will really impact ur credit for a long run?

furke: if u don't have a previous credit history, refrain from applying a Discover or American Express Cards (highly unlikely to get accepted for the ones without previous credit records/insufficient history). Also, I would not suggest you to get some cheapass credit cards like from the departmental stores or grocery stores (like Walmart, BestBuy, Macy's, etc..), rather go to ur bank where u have ur checking/savings account, and ask them u wanna apply for a credit card. It's more likely for u to get accepted for credit from ur regular banking location rather than applying at random online! Then, from that one credit card buildup ur good credit history. It will usually take at least 1-2 years to have ur credit take a shape. Good Luck!

Closing a credit card does impact the credit score. You should never close the card that contains the history from several years, as the length of credit matters as much as paying bills on time does.

There is a free website where you can log into to see your credit score. Its not like the one you can use it for a couple of times and then you get billed with ten dollars every month.

www.creditkarma.com

-This gives you the score from transunion.
-Totally free of charge, no obligation.
-Can compare your score with other people/ By state/ Domain name
-Shows you what can impact your score: you can stimulate the score as well.

Again, i am not aiming for its publicity, but its something that you should use often as its for free and no hassles to cancel.

I have been using this for myself since 2 years and never paid a dime.

@furke

Secured basically means you pay them the amount beforehand. Hence even if u screw up, they'll keep your money :) Not really a credit card, but they want to see how you utilize your credit!

@ramprasadneupane dai

Hmm I am sorry if my statement was misleading. By saying I removed "potentially negative" items, I meant the ones that were inconsistent. I know that having KD on your account sucks. One possible way to get that off (i hear, and im currently trying) is to file a inconsistency report with the agencies. This works only if you have PAID off in full. I would suggest calling up the other party and requesting yourself to be removed as well (although these fkrs dont gib a sh!t about you cuz they got their money so its kinda of a 'rot in hell' kinda deal). However you know its 7 years, why not give it a shot right?
