Until 5 to 10 years ago we never heard of mehandi and rangoli in mainstream nepali culture. But now every ram, shyam and ghanshyam is doing it. Why are we so much into leaving our nepali culture and embracing indian culture? Is it because of hindi movies or is Modi brainwashing innocent nepalis with his sweet talks?

We are the most hypocrite people on earth. We watch hindi movies, listen to hindi songs, eat their food, wear their dresses and yet we say that we do not like Indians or India. We call them "Dhotis", and we think it is uncool to speak hindi even though we are almost fluent in that language. Why?? As Funtush had pointed out, I rather keep my own culture and celebrate Tihar not Deepawali, and dont mind their music, movies, food etc. Funtush is right, I see this more and more that Nepali celebrating our own festivals as more and more Indian ways. Since when we start putting Rakhi in our hand? I have seen "puja" in people's house just like they do in hindi serials.

WTF you talking about? You are okay with Christinity taking over our culture , you are fine with it and but you are not okay to adapt the culture of Taraibasi. There is no Originality in our culture all imported from India. We migrated from India. You check your root then you will know about it.
It is called half empty vessel trump high.

Actually Nepalese are being influenced by Hindi movies and TV serials and are celebrating Tihar Indian way. Well people might argue that there is nothing wrong as long as they can enjoy and celebrate in harmony with friends and family. But in this whole euphoria, they are forgetting that the small kids/new generation might become unfamiliar with actual/original nepali way of celebrating Tihar. It should be our responsibility to preserve our native culture and pass that on to the new generation. They are rather learning fusion of cultures. Is this the effect of globalization or is it that we Nepalese get too carried away in copying others?

The communism is imported : not nepali original: what you have to say about that, Now the country is republican so why this ass**le need to worry about the culture because it is not imported from Russia or China but India. You should not be talking about any culture : communist party choose to be republican country.  You mind is full of shit.
To True Nepali: you have not been to Tarai therefore you no knowledge about tarai culture.  It is the city dweller who are copying the most from BollyWood. There is a question how much to adopt but we can not stop it and you are unhappy because the paahade are copying ? Any one oppose it should start from their home. That is how we will purify or keep up with our culture.

Magorkhe: Look, nobody can stop anyone from doing anything as long as he/she is not harming others. I don't think any of the cultures of celebration is bad. I don't have any negativity towards bollywood culture either. If people want to copy whatever they want to, to each his own.
But according to me, we celebrate Dashain, Tihar and other cultural festivals because we love our culture and we want to preserve/keep it and teach them to our kids. In Nepal, different communities have their own unique way of celebration. Pahadi bahun/chhetri have their own style, Newar have their own unique traditions and Madhesi/Tarai basi have their own. In the past, we never interfered in or disrespected other community's culture. So why not keep following our own unique culture and pass it on their values to our next generation.

I guess its evolution....and copying, pasting, importing, adapting all falls in its changing undercurrents;nothing big.We have already started to enjoy valentine's day, xmas, chatt and other festive occasions, engaging in it with greater tune than in the past ...but,we haven't also forgot to swing in that lingey-ping,shout "deusirey",eat dozens of sel and others activities which are inbred nepali stuffs....btw,nothing will remain same forever-you,me,this world, even sajha!

Xactly
I see these posts everywhere, in FB in Twitter..
If you wanted to continue what our great grand parents did, perhaps you should start wiping your floor with cow dung, not eat any meat and drink.
You just want to continue using that suits your lifestyle and you have a problem when somebody else modifies it?

I dont mind if someone celebrates rangoli, mehandi or other alien cultures but i am certainly concerned if we forget our own. To us our culture and our tradition is above anything. But i dont see any harm if we participate or celebrate foriegn culture as well.

In the last 5 years or so, I have been to Nepal 6 times and each time I have realized a degradation of almost everything in Nepal. Of course there is the degradation of political mass which is evident to everyone. But what has made me sad is the degradation of our culture and historical monuments.

I took a walk from Gugeshowri to Pashupati through the steps and saw a lot of beautiful old buildings and temples along the way in complete ruin. The beautiful Bishworup temple is in a very bad state. There are sellers selling water, wai-wai, chips and candies every 20-30 meters on those steps. I understand people want to make money, but there are places where it should be done and where it should not. Everything in Nepal has been neglected. The garden in Gaushala that belongs to Pashupati where there is a sanskrit school for bhramins used to be lush green with many trees of different species. Now most of those big trees have been cut to make some money. I heard that someone wants to make an amusement park in Bhandarkhal. There are many beautiful old houses (100-200 years old), built during Rana time around Naxal, Durbar Marg being torn down to build a concrete building.

My point is, Nepalese see or give importance to nothing these days in Nepal expect to money. All they care is about how to make money. They are ready to destroy anything that was part of history, or anything as long as there is money to be made. The culture within people is dying. Sometimes I get a feeling that people have lost their identity and are just floating around.

Rangoli is not supposed to be like mandap. Rangoli is colorful design in front of the door to welcome visitors.

Nepalis are being brain washed by hindi movies and indian tv. It's looking like indian TV is india's secret weapon to indianize the rest of south asia and now even nepalis living in US are falling for it.

I don't have any problem with people doing what they want to do but what I find amusing is why they start to copy indian culture. At what point do they start copying? So they see rangoli in tv for 10 years and then decide to do it at their home too?

Funtush, what did you do for Tihar? Now ask you folks what their grandparents did for TIhar. See if you are doing exact same thing that has been being done every generations, I guarantee you that most of what you do is different.

Things change. I don't advocate copying everything, but religion and cultures evolve from what goes around you. Assimilation and adaptation are part of our culture.

We never called it Rangoli, but we always made colorful decorations in front of the door since I can remember.

I seriously have problem with people posting in FB and Twitter ridiculing these practices. Why don't you enjoy what you enjoy and stop acting holier-than-thou?
