Bored with his software programming job in Minneapolis, Manav decided to go home early one lazy Friday. It was cold winter in Minnesota. He took his car key and left for home. On his way back home, he saw trees with no leaves which looked like as if they are dead skeletons. Such a view can take you to a state of depression especially if you are in Minnesota during winter. Manav had same feeling, and to cope with this nature’s ugly scene, a desire popped up in his mind: a desire to drink hot ginger milk tea. Sounds really good, isn’t it? Especially if you are in Minnesota during winter, you wouldn’t argue about that. Upon arrival to his apartment, he threw his jacket on the couch, frantically ran to the kitchen, opened his fridge and found out that he is out of milk. What a tragedy! His desire for milk tea was very strong so he decided to go to the nearby grocery store to buy milk.

Born and raised in Kathmandu, Manav Acharya, 30 years of age, belongs to an upper middle class strict Brahmin family in Nepal. He completed his +2 in science faculty from VS Niketan and came to the United States for his undergraduate degree. His friends describe him as a happy go lucky person. Manav has a simple dream in his life: to have a successful happy life. He works hard and plays hard. He now works for a software company in Minnesota which pays him very well. Once in a while he complains his programming job saying it is a dry job where you have to create complex codes staring at computer screen for hours. However, he seems happy with his earning potential as he recently bought a new BMW car which he dreamed of.

“And your total comes to twenty eight dollars and eighty cents,” the cashier at the Whole Foods Market in Minneapolis said to Manav giving a gentle smile. He took out his visa card and swiped it. The transaction was over and the cashier once again asked if he would like to keep his receipt. Manav took his receipt, gave her a smile and moved toward the parking lot. As he moved closer to his car, he saw a red Toyota corolla parked just beside his car. He saw a lady inside the car trying to start her car, but the car won’t listen to her and is hibernating like a frog! Subzero temperatures in Minnesota often gives this headache to car drivers and she was just another victim of Minnesota frigid subzero temperature. Manav opened his car door and as he was trying to sit down, the lady opened her car door and requested him if he can do a jump start for her. As she was uttering those words before him, he acknowledged something in her. He felt as if he had heard those tone before; he felt as if he had heard those dialect before. His subconscious was signaling him that she is a Nepali. Human nature is very interesting. A field of evolutionary psychology probed the human mind and found out that we trust our own group members more than that from other groups. A Nepali can figure out another Nepali from a large group provided the person gives some clue and the clue which the lady gave to Manav was pretty strong. A strong Nepali accent was enough for Manav to ask her if she was from Nepal. The lady was very much surprised as Manav found out where she is from. By the way, “I am Sneha. What’s your name?” She asked him with a cute smile. Manav was also surprised, because how often you meet a Nepali person in a parking lot in Minneapolis? “I am Manav,” he kindly answered her query.

Born and raised in Butwal, Sneha Bishwakarma, 26 years of age, belongs to an upper middle class family in Nepal. Her cute personality cannot be hidden. Her friends describe her as a humble and most adorable person they have known so far. In fact, she has won the title of ‘Beauty Queen’ in her high school and college level beauty pageants. Not only this, she passed both her SLC and +2 in distinction. Her soft voice, her beauty, her intelligence, and her modesty is like weapon which can control even the King of Heaven, Indra. She has an undergraduate degree from UCLA in Clinical Psychology and works for the University of Minnesota in a Cognitive Psychology lab. Her father is a businessman and owns 6 jewelry shops in Nepal.

(Part Two)

Reaching to his trunk, Manav took his jumper cable out and asked Sneha to turn off her car engine. “Sure,” replied Sneha with her intoxicating smile and divine voice. Her voice entered Manav’s ear and created an effect in his mind which he couldn’t understand. After clamping the cable properly on both cars, Manav started the boosting process. Sneha was closely looking at his hand to learn what he was doing. “Now start your car and let it idle for a few minutes,” Manav instructed Sneha. Sneha followed his instructions and her car once again came back to life. “What a relief,” Sneha muttered with herself.
“Thank you so much Manav.”
“My pleasure.”
“Do you live close by here?” Sneha queried.
“Yes, pretty close. It just takes like 10 minutes from here,”
“Nice. Are you living in Minneapolis for a while then?”
“It’s been 6 years.”
“Oh, wow! I just moved from California. It’s been 4 months. Too cold here!”
“Welcome to Minnesota! By the way, I am making hot ginger milk tea, would you like to join?”
“Ginger tea sounds awesome in this cold winter but I am in a little hurry right now and have to report to my lab pretty soon for a research project that I am working on. I hope you don’t mind."
“Not at all.”
“Ammm…….Do you use Facebook?” I will add you in Facebook and will let you know when I am free from my lab and we can meet up later for your ginger milk tea if you don’t mind.”
“That sounds great. You can search me on Facebook as Manav_ach121.”
“Ok then, nice meeting with you and thank you once again for fixing my car.”
“No problem,” replied Manav and both departed to their destination.

Blood dripping from his index finger, Manav opened his Medical Tool Box and quickly reached for a band aid. “I should have been more careful while cutting this ginger,” Manav murmured mentally in the Kitchen. His mind has been disturbed after coming back from the parking lot. Otherwise, how can a guy so proficient in chopping onions could cut himself while cutting a tiny ginger? The study of psychology reveals that human senses become useless if mind withdraws from them. In other words, if mind is distracted it will not be able to catch all the inputs from the outside world through the senses compromising mind-body interactions. The charming personality of Sneha has created an impact on Manav’s psyche. Usually, Manav is a self-controlled guy; however, after seeing Sneha’s intoxicating smile and hearing her divine voice, his mind has become somewhat restless. Even Indra would have hard time controlling his mind after seeing Sneha, who is Manav?

Manav spent that entire evening in-front of his laptop waiting for Sneha’s friend request in Facebook. He even tried searching her by her first name but in vain. “I should have asked her full name, now I cannot find her in Facebook,” he felt helpless. He had no mood to cook that night as his mind was disparately wanting to connect with Sneha. Manav ordered Veggie Pizza that night from the Pizza Hut and waited till mid-night for Sneha’s friend request. “No hope,” Manav told himself and went to bed.

maharaj,
i am not a writer, but a fighter.

your story is great, i could not write more than " manav felt in love with sneha when he met her at whole food super market parking lot..."

i really like your posts on spritural topics.

reading this story was like reading love story written by religious writer, or say it was missing the rhetoric of love story.

i still give it one "like"

(Part two continued....)

A typical Friday for Sneha varies depending on her work load. Recently, after joining the cognitive lab at the University of Minnesota, she has become busy with her ‘Dream Research Project’. Her enthusiasm in the field of cognitive science can be seen through her keen devotion to the project she is working on lately. She completely forgot to add Manav on Facebook that Friday because she was so much absorbed with her ‘dream data analyses. “Do you have any kind of claustrophobia?” Sneha asked her volunteer who was ready to be part of the dream experiment. “No,” replied her subject. Before putting her subject inside the fMRI machine, Sneha checked his past medical history and gave green signal to the radiologist to turn on the fMRI machine. The subject was slowly put inside the fMRI machine and Sneha started monitoring the computer screen. The subject soon went to deep sleep and Sneha started analyzing the data. “Quite interesting,” Sneha talked with herself.

When Sneha returned to her apartment it was already 11:00 PM. Kali, her pet dog, was so excited about Sneha’s return. She jumped into Sneha’s lap and started licking her face. “Stop it Kali, you are making my face wet,” Sneha told Kali but Kali won’t stop, as her excitement was beyond her control. Kali was only 6 months when Sneha adopted her from the UCLA Animal Care Center. She will be 7 years old next year. “ल खाऊ,” Sneha gave Kali her food and went to the kitchen to find something to eat. “भोक त तेती लागेको छैन, के खाने होला,” she murmured with herself. She took out the gallon of milk, poured into the glass, and put it inside the microwave. A warm cup of milk at night can easily take you to sleep. Yawn after yawn, Sneha cuddled inside her blanket and felt asleep.

Manav is not a morning person. His appetite for sleep increases even more during Saturdays. However, his behavior was not rational that Saturday. He was up early and there was a reason for it. Strong unfulfilled desires won’t let us sleep and Manav’s desires were so strong that he could hardly sleep the required eight hours of sleep that Friday night! Manav got up, opened his laptop, and checked his Facebook just to find that Sneha has still not added him! “I should have asked her phone number in the parking lot,” he lamented. Sneha’s cute smile and soft voice was still revolving around Manav’s head. He was behaving as if he had tasted some kind of divine nectar in the Whole Foods parking lot which he was seeking more. The vivid image of Sneha’s red kurtha and salwar with blue dupatta which she was wearing that day was rotating around Manav’s mental eye! In the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the living room, in the basement, everywhere he went, Sneha’s vivid image followed him like shadow follows oneself. The impressions that Sneha left on Manav’s mind was not an ordinary kind. He had never felt like this before. In a sense, Manav was an iron and Sneha was a magnet. When iron gets close to a magnet, it gets attracted by that magnet and even get charged! Similarly, Manav’s mind was charged with Sneha’s impressions.

We usually like many things in life but when we are asked why we like those things we cannot answer it easily. We normally say we like things because it gives satisfaction. We never try to find out why a particular something gives satisfaction (though temporary) and not the others. Why something attracts us at all? It turns out that we unconsciously tend to like things or persons which consists of qualities which we lack in ourselves. We desire particular things or persons because we feel that we lack those qualities and we seek union with it. In hope of getting permanent happiness through objects or persons outside we seek connection with those things or persons. Sneha possessed those qualities which Manav lacked in himself. Though Manav was not aware of it consciously, his inner self was aware of those deep desires which Manav longed for years. The presence of Sneha merely resurfaced those deep hidden desires which Manav was entertaining for years.

(Part 3)

“Wake up Kali, time to go for a walk outside,” Sneha gently patted Kali trying to wake her up from her sleep. Kali was not in the mood for a walk today as she already sniffed the weather outside. It was raining outside and Kali hates rain! On the other hand, Sneha loves rain. She becomes romantic whenever it’s raining. All kinds of romantic thoughts come to Sneha’s mind whenever it is raining. She went to the window and started staring at the rain. Immediately she was in the other world: A world of imagination which Sneha alone knows. She loves that world because it is a fairy-tale world where everything is perfect and romantic. Suddenly, she remembered Manav. “Oh no, I forgot to add him in the Facebook,” Sneha murmured with herself. She opened her laptop, started searching for Manav’s profile, and sent a friend request to Manav.

Manav is neutral to rain. He neither loves rain nor hates it. Forgetting everything about Sneha, Manav went to the bathroom and started shaving his beard. “I must be the world’s number one handsome man,” he told himself mentally, looking at the mirror, giving a silly smile to himself! Manav is somewhat in a delightful mood today as he was invited for a lunch by one his childhood friends, Nimi.

Nimi Pokhrel and Manav Acharya know each other since kindergarten. They grew up in the same colony, went to the same high school and college. Nimi and Manav get along with each other very well. They are like BFF (Best Friend Forever!) since their childhood. Their parents also get along very well. There were no ceremonies in Manav’s and Nimi’s house without each other’s family participation. Though they lived in two separate houses, Nimi’s and Manav’s families were like one giant family. Manav’s mother always used to tease Nimi saying, “You are my future Buhari.” Nimi was small at that time and couldn’t understand what Manav’s mom was saying. She just used to ignore her, blushing and shying away from her. Manav’s mom, Lata Devi Acharya, likes Nimi a lot. Whenever Nimi comes to her house, Lata Devi treats her like her own family member.

After completing +2 from VS Niketan together with Manav, Nimi also applied to the US universities with the help of Manav. Nimi and Manav both wanted to go to the same school in the US but Nimi’s scholarship award was much higher from Oklahoma State University than from Minnesota, so she decided to join Oklahoma State. Manav went to Minnesota and Nimi went to Oklahoma. This was the first time in the history of their lives where they were physically cut-off from each other. It was a moment of sadness as well as of new opportunities for both of them.

Nimi is a sensitive girl. She is cute and adorable with fair complexion accompanied with long curly black hair which gives her a mysterious girly appearance. She has now become a nice and gentle lady who cares and who is compassionate. Nimi has completed her accounting degree from Oklahoma State and now works for a CPA firm in St. Paul area in Minnesota. She is very much excited to meet Manav after 5 years!
