All friends,

I have been to USA for about 20 years. I have obtained Masters Degree in computer science. I have worked in various companies including in Government sector as a contractor for more than 15 years in software development field.

Now, I started getting frustrated of being here. I want to go back to Nepal for good. I wanted to join a college as a computer science teacher in Kathmandu.

Please give me some advice if you have information on this.

Thanks.

Hi NepaliBhai,

It is a great idea to go back Nepal with your full expertise in your field. The country needs so many talented people and there still you can contribute a lot with your full potential. The working environment in US and in Nepal might be different but it the work and contribution what you are going to do there will be more important and valuable. All the best.

Nepal is a beautiful country. You will be more happy there, since you have seen pretty much everything in america. Here, life is nothing but work and home.

Your information and advice are very meaningful to me.

I have seen and experienced all the way from college to professional job and money. BUT, I don't have community here where I can enjoy my culture.

Yes sinope, I just go to work and come home. This has burnt my enthusiasm of being in our community and being mixed in our culture.

For other friends who do not encourage to go back, I want to ask them what are the things that will frustrate me? Is that physical facilities? I am interested to know the pros and cons.
I sincerely appreciate your valuable inputs and advice.

If you really feel that you want to do something in Nepal, you want to share your knowledge
there and bring some change in the existing situation in Nepal. This is the primary reason you went abroad to gain better knowledge and this is the right time for you to give back. Just going to involve in community and culture, that will be only for your own selfishness. After few months you will be tired of that community and society and you will start to think of US again.

If you are not interested in anything else other than work, home and back to work and home...well it almost guaranteed that life will get damn frustrating, depressing, mundane and so forth no matter where you choose to live. In other words, damn unhappy life.

North America is too big, has too much to offer to be explored, and too many things to contribute to in this lifetime. After living here for almost two decades, I have barely scratched the surface.

If you happen to live in the Pacific Northwest, well, you have a great opportunity to explore mycology and experience nature, hiking, wildlife, cooking, and contribute to science as parts of the same big package.

I have seen my friends returning back and getting depressed. To be honest, go there for 2 months for a vacation, you will start missing US. If you have GC/citizenship get married, move to places with lots of Nepalese around. In Nepal you're gonna do the same thing- work and home. Use your effort to bring your families here. Other will advice you to go back do something for your country. That's all BS! All of a sudden after 20 yrs u suddenly got a Patriotic dream ? - most will ask you

NepaliBhai, Where do you live btw? If you live one of those boring midwest where there is nothing to do then you are living in wrong place. Go to somewhere where you can find adventure like pacific north west or colorado.

Go to Nepal, Give it a try if it doesn’t work out, come back here. Life is too short to regret. My only concern is pollution in Kathmandu.it has gotten 200 times worse in last 20 years.

I think same on and off, but stut myself down after looking at kids. I don’t want them to go through same cycle again, they might end up coming to US as migrant like us and go through same cycle again.

you must be around 40. you will face ageism in IT now. I say use your money and start a small business or something. Definitely live in place like Texas or NY where there are lots of Nepalis. Nepal is our home but it has changed a lot. Too much traffic jams, too much dust, but ppl are more civilized than 10 years ago. There are lots of ppl who want to do better for the country in Nepal now a days. I say give it a try.

Nepalibhai Dai,
I am having same thoughts. Heading to Nepal not for good but at least a trial phase. Here no matter you ride a range rover or buy a 500K lavish house with 30 years payment plan, its all Credit and payments, it belongs to Creditor or bank end of the day. May be same way in Nepal but debt options are limited, they ask or need collateral in Nepal as far I know. I was talking with another dai who have been here since 1992 works on decent IT job, he said same thing, the system runs in credit, no matter how much money you make, you are still trying to catch up. There is limited surplus or savings here unless you really are making more than average Joe (400-500K a year). In a way, life becomes monotonous, same smile (Hi, Hows weekend, Kids Ok etc) to khaireys and Coworkers. You might have to do same in Nepal as well but end of day, you will be around your family members and society. Especially, birthdays, festivals, marriage and other rituals will be totally different compared to here unless you have few family members here. So, yes there is pros n cons no matter where you live, point is where will you be happy. Once the feeling of not being happy comes, it will be hard to get over as that feelings would not come in first place if you were already happy.
So, I will tell you my plan. I plan to go there for 3-4 months. Dashain-Tihar fun yes, but after that I want to explore Job/Business opportunities. How family and society acts after you are no longer guest, what are actual challenges to make living and settle down. With my education and experience, can I afford the living standard I plan over there ( Need at least a Car, hot water and weekends off Lol). I will basically, try to be member of society there and get a sense. If It works out well, I will plan to stay there. If it goes south, I will pack my suitcase and come back, 1-2 months of struggle, job searching etc then again back in track. Of course my home and family will always be in Nepal, but for my lifestyle choices, facilities, provision and freedom that States provide, I will stay here. I am not going to start from scratch again anywhere, life is too short for that. I will visit whenever I get chances like once a year or so and stay happy lol.

After working for almost 20 years, I believe you should be financially independent by now.

You should have enough wealth to live on without working. That doesn't mean you have to retire early. You can take on a passion project that may not pay very well. But isn't that the sole purpose of being financially free?

Based on your interest, I would suggest you schedule a 6-12 months stay in Nepal. Anything shorter than 6 months is a small sample size. Try to avoid Dashain/Tihar if you want to get an actual feeling of a mundane life in Nepal.

  • Rent an apartment
  • Find a lecturer job
  • Keep track of your  budget
  • Start a daily journal
At the end of your experiment, go through your journal and see how your thoughts have evolved over time. Most likely you will find your answer there.

Only you know what's best for you.

Ok, here we go, for Nepali Bhai. You need to make community where you live. You need to knock the doors and find the way to socialize.Same happens in Nepal too. You will get only what you had invested for. Just saying "oh I don't have community here, work and home," does not bring anything unless you put effort to make it. It will be useless trying to fill water if the bucket is leaking from inside. So, try to find out what is the real problem behind looking for community and try to solve in that way is the best. Good luck!
