what are some good filims about nepal and the himalayan region? they don't have to be american movies, be we have to be able to access them here. meaning they can't be obscure nepali filims. although, i know "numafung" is now available through some organizations here in the states. there are other movies like "himalaya/caravan," "little buddha" (although keanu reeves as lord buddha is terribly offensive!), "kundun." what are some others?

This is not Nepali, but if you are into mountain climbing or trekking, you must watch " Touching the Void", based on a real story. It ain't no "survivor" reality TV show. It is very intense.

you'll never guess where i'm from!!! i'm from new jersey! that's right- ma bideshi hun, tara peace corps volunteer huda, palpa maa basthie. i lived in chirtungdhara vdc, about 1 hour east of tansen. hey, swaati- are you thapa magar or thapa chhetri? you still didn't mention any movies!!! i just think keanu reeves is a horrible horrible actor, that's why i said it's offensive. i'm not a fan of steven seagal either. and you're right- it does seem like the "mystic and exotic" land of the himalayas is big money these days- especially tibetan buddhism. bedrock- thanks for the input regarding the movies. but i need movies that are specifically about nepal and the himalayas. any you can think of? please let me know if there are.

Perhaps the best one I have ever seen is "Everest". I watched it with all 3D effects in OKC omnitheater a few years ago.You can rent it from Blockbusters or other rentals. It is based on Jon Krakaur's book called "Into Thin Air". It describes the time when 14 climbers had died in a single night. You will never forget this movie. It shows you how great(and thrilling) our mountains are. Another one of similar kind , even though it's about climbing K2, I cherished was "Verticle Limits". Enjoy them. DP.

IMAX screen big enough for Everest documentary By TYLER McLEOD -- Calgary Sun The IMAX screen has finally met its match. Even for the overwhelming capabilities of an IMAX screen, Mt. Everest is a tall order. Film-maker David Breashears, however, has a towering accomplishment in Everest. Audiences will never get closer to experiencing the summit of Earth's highest point without actually joining an expedition. Everest follows three climbers on their journey to an altitude of 8,848 metres. One is Ed Viesturs, who has climbed 10 of the world's 14 highest peaks without an oxygen tank; the second is Araceli Segarra, the first Spanish woman to reach the summit; and the third climber -- the heart of the story -- is Jamling Tenzing Norgay, whose father was the first to scale Everest with Edmund Hillary. Of course, there is no mention of Breashears himself during the film's 43 minutes -- a feat of modesty almost as amazing as the trip itself. For it was he who made this stunning footage possible -- the logistics of which are almost incomprehensible. Anyone who's taken the IMAX tour knows IMAX equipment isn't something you want strapped to your back when creeping across a bottomless ice chasm. It's a dangerous mission without the extra distractions, as evidenced by the May 10, 1996 tragedy. This Everest expedition made headlines when another party attempted the summit at that time was caught in a storm on the mountain. The blizzard killed eight climbers and footage of the storm puts us in the middle of the drama. Everest is more than drama, of course. The documentary covers all emotions and is certain to fascinate all. The film visits the cliffs of Baja, the mountains of Utah and Buddhist temples of Nepal. Narrated by Liam Neeson, Everest is certainly one of the most ambitious IMAX features to date. DP.

DP, you really need to watch "touching the void", it will make Vertical Limits look like a joke. The movie is also available at Blockbuster. My co-worker, who is a moountain climber personally met this guy, which i think is amazing. I am very fascinated by mountain climbing, although all I can dream of is to get to the base camp.
