Dear Sajha reader, I am very very sorry to write this message and I question myself who am I? Am I a human being or not? what is different between me and other nepalese people? I don't get satisfied answer and I am innerly burning myself. I know that while I am writing my problem nobody will listen to me and nobody care to me and others who are like me. It is the universal truth that the world is running on the 21st century. But in Nepal still they are busy to seperate the lower caste and upper caste system. Not only in Nepal, even in abroad their thinking style is same. I think they don't have the thinking power at all. They can not feel anything and they don't know what is life, what is humanity and what is human right. They are only proud of themselves being so-called high caste. And making the caste base they want to show their devilness. You might be puzzle d that what I am talking about and what is the topic? What made me to write this; the answer is below: I was born in Nepal as being so-called low caste. Now, I am in New York, USA. I am at college now. Everybody knows that how expensive room/apartment is in US, specially New York city. So, I request to share an apartment with a Nepali guy thinking my own family and relatives. I had thought that the nepalese caste system will be limited within Nepal. And then they asked my caste, I told the reality after that he said, " I am so sorry, if you shared apartment with us then nobody gonna come to our apartment and everybody will hate us". I surprised and asked, why? He easily answered, " you are Dalit, untouchable caste". Hearing all this I became so sad and cried myself. I had never thought that I am such a lower level person. I could not sleep at all, it made me really upset with my life. On the another day, I saw an advertisement at India Abroad (which publishes in New York) that a Nepali family is looking for a roommate to share a room. I called them and it was almost fixed to move their apartment and finally they asked my caste and I told the truth, again they repeated the same statement stated above. I felt like a deadbody myself and cried again. Numerous time I tried to share a room with Nepali people but all the time I was rejected and rejected. Finally, I am tired and I am sharing a room with a Indonesian family. I am also Nepali, I love Nepal and I have the same blood as other Nepali people has but why I am being an actor of hatred among Nepalese people. I am asking the question myself. Guys, if you have heart and humanity please, could you spend a second to solve the problem?

That's very true. It is a shame you have been treated like that. But it is not only in apartments, any functions and gathering, you see that people tend to group together by castes. I meet so many bahuns and chetris and they first think I'm one of them. After I tell them I'm a Newar, no more talk -- TA TA! Hope things change at least here!

Very easy solution: Just avoid those people who mistreat you. One thing I don't understand, there are millions of people in this country. Why would you need a Nepali to share a room with you? Caste system is a serious problem. There is not an overnight solution to it.

Do not make anybody manipulate you based on this. Evberbody should denounce racism. Its the cause of all problems. Bhattu, yo musta be kidding me. Get real and accept the fact. I really cannot believe that this sort of discrimination takes place in USA. Not only that but I can perceive a reluctance from the sajhaites when it comes to tackle problems of such nature. Yes definitely this is an issue that needs to be discussed. We being the so called "educated class" should be the ones to understand that nobody is upper or lower class. We are what we make of ourselves. We cannot be judged by what we were born as. No wonder such discrimination has led to the current state of our country. Every human being deserves respect no matter what caste ,creed they belong to unless he/she has done some harm to you or society at large. I sincerely hope sajhaites will atke a moment to ponder and post their thoughts.

If its true, then its very sad. In this age and time, if people behave and treat you like that.. well.. you just pity them and leave them with their miserable life. And about bahun and chettri not talking to you Mr. testdirector... is that so? I know these things happens when its about marriages and stuffs.. but well.. perhaps i never paid attention to these stuffs. Khai ke ho ke...hopefully someday soon, we all can look above our caste and just accept each other for simply being a nepali and better still as a human being. Wondering... IndisGuise:(

Testdirector: Not all Bahuns and Chhetris avoid Newars. If they avoid Newars that is only when two Newars start a conversation in Newari in a group of all.

Deadbody sad to hear your experience, indeep accept it or not one of our prime cause of backwardness has been the adherence to mideveal era dikkats. I have experienced, the divided strength of a Nepali comunity (outside Nepal), when the issue of caste was brought in. Nobody gained anything out of it, those who were objecting to the raise and active involvement of the community cause, merely he happened to be a dalit (as a matter of fact he was a Cheetri, but married to a so called dalit lady) are long dead and gone, but they did create hurdle to what could have strengthen the community welfare. Now, the temple, the other social activities that was started is told to be in a sad state, whose lost was it?, anyway who could convience those arogant elders who raised their voice of decent. Now, in this age, such things are unacceptable but as DP rightly pointed out the transition will take time and we all can be a catalyst to enhance the speed of the transition for common good.

deadly boy I (we) wish, we nepali were only like that, then somehow these "hatred" could be conrtolled only within the boundaries of Nepal, but the fact is whole world is..muslims are, christians are, hindus are, blacks are, whites are, rich are, poor are, palestinians are, isreali's are, American's are, al queda is, and together whole world is. Hatred is a character of a human being, just like love. We need to eliminate whole human race to solve this solution competly. There is no perfect solution to it, laws can only limit physical action against each other, they cannot make you "Think" the way they want you to think. Since you are here in America, you can notice living example within the American community, and witness how black and white are so divided. There might not be any PErfect solution but a understandable solution is available, and i am handing it to you. IT is exploring, understanding, learning, gaining wisdom and knowledge, doing the right thing, trusting your morals, and then after achieving all that, you teaching the world who you are, your values and your morals, and than again beilive me, there will still lie some ignorant fools but rest of the wrold will credit you, praise you and respect you.

Discrimination is inevitable. This time it was about caste among Nepali in US. Tomorrow it is going to be about how many dollars we make-Minimum wages vs Career Job people. So, its just not us NEPALIS who discriminate.Remember, the motive of creating Caste system wasn't corrupted as it seems like;it was supposed to function so that all of us in a society would have a speific job to do. Alas, it didnt work but it sure did bring lot of differences. I, seriously recommend the victim to not to feel bad about those events. I am very sure that those people who turned you down are some glitches who need to be fixed. Also, there are tons of Nepalis who won't mind about your so called "caste". Having said dont come to conclusion that all BAHUNS AND CHETTRIS(OR any superior castes) will discriminate against you. About the thing about Chettris and Bahuns not talking well to Newars. I dont know about that. I have had quite a few Newar frens and we never felt that way. One this is for sure that whenever I went tho their house..they used to speak in Newari..which would bewilder me at times but again..I also learnt some "words";) Anyway, we all are Nepalis--Lets enjoy and live together

I agree with Casey00 , I was brought up in kathmandu , may be I havent felt the problems they r facing in Far western or Western places of Nepal where people still descriminate their fellows with caste but anyway Deadbody there is nothing to feel sad its not becoz u r frm a lower caste or they frm higher class its their state of mind in which they r unable to think "Birth is not the coz of being great but Brain is" as I remember the famous quote of LAxmi PD Devkota "MANIS THULO DIL LE HUNCHA JAAT LE HUDAINA". And abt those Newar blaming Bahuns n Chettris, common man I can say I know newar frens from kathmandu, Patan, kirtipur n Bhaktapur and my frens were mostly newars:) I miss those guys when we used to ko to Jatras together drinking 'chyang.' n our Newarni auntis used to make Bara, Chatamari, Choyala, whenever we used to visit them...yesterday was "Ma Puja I guess" damn I miss that aswell when we used to deusi together after "Ma puja" I used to watch them doing so ,and used to have offerings together. One thing is sure Newar guys have Talents I mean real talents for arts like in the field of music, sculptures, paintings etc. Damn me n my fren started together some guitar courses...I was stuck in understanding those Notations, he never used notations he could just figure out the chords frm the sound later on he could understand the whole notations. Man they r coooolll, I respect Newars...yeah they do speak Newari with each other n there is nothing to mind atleast I can say I can understand Newari being a Kathmanduite there r peaople brought upin Kath. n they no nothing abt newari culture n language..what else can I say than shame on u. But yeah those guys who say Bahuns n chettris discriminate Newars I guess I would be perfect example to make u change ur views....Cheer up Guys...jojoloppa.:)

okayyyyyyy, Another Bahun-chhetri-Newaril and oh yeah,,, big word , which i have never understood "mongolian" bullshit again in sajha..... Whoever wrote the original mesage about discrimination. Let me tell you something. Dude 2 things: a) you're a big fat liar... b) if it is true then don't live with those losers... a) you're a big fat liar: i have never met anyone who would be so harsh on dalits in the USA- at least so far. Hell, every bahuns i have met here has chewed burger when they were in transit in bangkok or the first few times they went in to McDees. I don' tknow what kinda of people you are trying to live. I have yet to see such dhoti wearing, tuppi paling, janayeee lagying, and mantra japing bahuns living- working in the NYC. Also, why would someone be so frank about discrimination... makes me skeptical.. like they can say,, oh we were looking for a roommate but we have found another one, or well, we were looking but turns out we don't need one at the moment so check back later.. why would they say soemting so frankly like we're discriminating you cuz of you're dalits and we're higher caste.. b) if you're right.. then , those guys are losers. sooner or later they will learn thier lesson... And of course, they are not worth it to live with.. if they discriminate you cuz of your last name then that means they are illetrate, stupid, cow-chewing, narga heading bahuns.... so why do you even wanna live with them... I don't say that there is no such discrimination in Nepal, but i have never seen such in the usa.. as long as hanging out with Nepali and Nepali association goes.. you're better if you do not let them get into your personal life.. i personally prefer to stay out of Nepali association.. it' s not easy.. it takes a lot of time and decipline to practice , to learn to do stuff on your own, and pick the friends that from different culture and values... it works like a charm at the end though and certainly worth it.. so don't worry about too much on finding and trying to get into Nepali community.. there is nothing more than complaning, green card talks, show offs, Nepricorn childrens and thier prantents dillemmas, and back biting, judgying and what not.. stay away from those discussion and chats which would give them chance to judge you... i usually go to Nepali fucntion , hit the food.. and run away.. no need to stay with troubles for a long time... Also, Indoneasian people are super nice.. so enjoy your time and surrounding.. don't bother about Nepali dude.. and ya, if you find those bastards in a dark or somthing, don't forget to push them in a ditch... ;) chill

Well.... I am so sorry to hear about your experience, deadbody, buddy. I am just wondering how those supercaste people from Nepal are surviving in that big city like "Big Apple"??? Must be having nightmare every freaking second during their stay there.... May be that's the newfound reason (defensive mechanism) of survival !!! Do you know this "Serenity Prayer"??? "God grant me the serenity to accept the things which I cannot change Change the things which I can And Wisdom to know the difference" Regards!!!

deadbody, u could be talking crap or u could be trying to get a point thru, albiet camouflage ishstyle. reading all the posts all i can say is two words> self empowerment< caste, creed & religion will loose it's imperviousness when u have what others desire. and quit mentioning feelings of stigmatization, the more u say it aloud, the better it makes them feel. their notion of superiority is only enhanced by u're acceptance of being a lesser being. to hell with them if they felt their circle of friends would judge them on the basis of them having given board to a person of a lower class. fu.k them , and their antiquated notions of superiority solely based on birth, and stuff them for being needy enough to take boarders in to supplement their meagre income which ironically merely serves to fulfill their pretentious c.cksu.king, i'm a higher caste than u, look at me, look at me tarikas. f.ck them. they need the money, i.e they're needy, but they still think they're better than u. thats my rant for the day. ahh the powers of the net
