Last cries of a dying destitute! You can try, Gyane, but you ain't fooling us no more! And those who would be willing to be fooled by him should be ready to sink in the same boat with him.

The masses made their voices heard, LOUD and CLEAR: WE WANT GANATANTRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having said that, I think it is also imperative that the Nepali intelligentsia, including those in the Diaspora, now begin to believe in the dream of a Nepal as a country without the monarchy. For over two hundred years we were enslaved. For over two hundred years we were made to believe that our "royal masters" were needed, and that without them we were nothing. And for over two hundred years we were trapped in the vicious cycle of impediments created by the slave mentality.

If we are not to free ourselves from even the slightest doubt in ourselves, we will be doomed to series of revolutions, upheavels and turmoil, for a long, long time to come.

Let's do it! Let's do it in such a way that we'd be done once and for all. Let's believe in ourselves, individually and collectively! Let's believe in our power. Let's believe in our intellect. Let's believe that we can free ourselves. Let's believe in final emancipation.

Let's believe in DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF NEPAL!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, EVERYONE is welcome in DEMOCRATIC Republic of Nepal, including you, BRC.

I am sure we can't do without a few mental institutions even in a free and equal society/country.

Well said, Poonte!

Nothing less than REPUBLIC should be acceptable now.

And those who like to run around with fear like headless chicken: "oh what are we going to do when the King is gone? Won't the Maoists kill or enslave us all? What about these SPA leaders who don't know how to govern? Won't the sky fall on us if we don't have monarchy?"

I say to you, have some self-confidence. For once, let your minds step out from the slavery of past 250 years. If we can bring down this brutally repressive royal regime backed by modern army and police, we can similary stare down any threats that may arise from so-called Maoist guerillas. But the point is to be all inclusive and let Maoists join into the multiparty republic. If they want to rule the nation, for prescribed period, they can... as long as they have the necessary votes.

Poonte aka AnilJShahi,

The pro-democracy movement is on its way to a climax.

Instead of exhorting people from afar to do this or that (which is an easy thing to do!), is it NOT time for you to honor your own PUBLIC announcement on Sajha -- that you would return to Nepal fight for democracy?

If not now, when?
If not you, who?

Surely, your coming back in 2010 after all this is over will be a disappointment, no?

Forgive me, if I piss you and some of your political buddies off with this posting. You see, as a democrat, I am making sure that what you said in public here about yourself surfaces once again for the public record before some of us decide take any of your grand pronouncements seriously.

Of courrse, if you have changed your mind about returning to Nepal, that's fine too.
A public update will be nice.

You don't have to defend yourself with anger or anything. Just come back to Nepal, if you can -- since, by your own admission, you haven't been back for long since 1989,
the year the Berlin Wall came down. Nepal needs you at this crucial hour.

That said, I thought Pratyoush Onta, a Nepali historian, gave excellent analyses of
the king's speech on BBC World Service.

Poonte in Sajha has established himself as a "musa". He is full of talk and no action just like his buddy or ideal Nepe.
You are a disgrace Poonte. You are like those back stabbers who push others to fight in the frontline while you hide your tail between your legs and step behind. Shame on you and the life you are living. Have some dignity and respect to your ownself.

Ashu,

Don't jump into conclusions and/or judgements about what my plans are. You wouldn't know ANYTHING.

I have been doing what I can for the cause of democracy in Nepal from whereever.

Expressing one's opinion does not always amount to public proclamations.

And for your kind information, not that it would matter to you, or to the issue at hand, I spent a whole year in Nepal since the Berlin Wall fell.

Chakku,

In a democracy, any one of us can ask uncomfortable questions to the king, to girija,
to Poonte aka AnilJShahi, to pushpa kamal dahal and to ashu. We have to take the risk that these questions might be seen as "cheap" or whatever else by some people.

Let's NOT fear uncomfortable and possibly hard questions that we might ask one another about our various PUBLIC actions.

I am all for this sort of transparency and openness.

We won't know what is what until we ask, and hold people accountable to what
they say in public -- no matter who they are.

Tetti ho, yaar.

I think Ashu raised valid point BUT was it appropriate at this time/thread or let’s say was it done with good intension or with positive attitude? I am still uncertain about his intension (I have no way to judge it!). But he remained to Poonte what he claimed last year. No harm to remind a friend about his proclamation that he would return back to Nepal in an about a year.

Ashu, if you say that you are democrat, then why dont we see, in your articles or online posts, even a single line saying that you support the present movement for democracy. You always say you dont support the present leaders. I also do not support most of the leaders. But cant you see that the present movement has transformed from parties' movement to people's movement? Then why dont you bother to write even a single line to support the democrartic movement ? That just proves one thing to me. You cannot be a democrat. I like to call you an opportunist because I am sure once king is thrown and democratic republic of nepal is established, you will be the first one to speak in favor of democracy openly. Being oppurtunist is not a wrong thing in today's materialistic world.

Ashu,

Since you said you are open to questions, let me ask you some.

1. Are you in Kathmandu?

2. Where do you stand on your political ideologies, vis-a-vis Nepal? Are you a royalist, constitutional monarchist, pro-republic, Maoist?

3. How are you contributing to the call for democracy?

4. Will I be seeing you tomorrow at Ratna Park?

Regards,

Chatra Man

Those who hate the king for whatever reasons will say: "No deal, and let's fight until the king is driven out." This means, a continuation of what's been happening for the past two weeks, on an escalated pace.

But SPA leaders may not want to go down this route now, for it means that they are likely to be swept aside altogether in the process too. SPA leaders may say that they are doing for the people, but their own vested interests to get back to power are not to be overlooked.

It matters what the neighbors say. And it matters what India advises the SPA leaders. At the moment, India's official line is: "Multi-party democracy and constitutional monarchy in Nepal."

To that end, Yashsant Sinha -- who'll be in Nepal on 24 April -- is likely to say to the party leaders, "Call off the protest movement. Choose your PM. Go for the elections.
Go for a fresh beginning. Start things in a new parliament. And get on with life. "

China, which is increasing its trade and investments in India, will give a nod to India's position.Neither of these two big countries want to deal with anarchy, violence and mayhem of a failed state in their midst -- and will do everything to calm the situation
now. The US and the Britain will play this line too.

As for the king, he has narrowly saved his throne for now. Though he started off with a "I am in charge" message in February 2005 when everything was then in shambles,
his failure to deliver on his promises has made the everything worse, and cost him and the institution of monarchy dearly. If he's going to do anything sensible for himself now, it's to engage in a series of PR exercises and not engage in further political maneuevering. If he tries to be too clever by half again, he'll be gone -- because
he has shown himself to be an inept politician and a lousy business strategist who cannot anticipate opponents' various moves.

But it all depends on the people now.
If they say, "Not enough".
More street-level protests from tomorrow onward.

If not, the situtation will be gradually be diffused by the curfew-weary public for now.

Ashu,

You don't pay my salary. I shall in no way be held accountable to you. Perhaps you consider Sajha to be the Parliament of Nepal. I don't.

Again, you jumped into conclulsions/judgements about my plans without knowing anything. As for your request for an "update", once again, NOT as an obligation out of being accountable to you or to anyone else, but rather as a mere FAVOR, you would have gotten it if you had asked for it in a different manner. Demands, where the sense of accountablity does not exist, mostly go futile with me.

I end here with regards to your PERSONALIZATION of the issue at hand, which includes your notion of who is more/or less democratic. You can start a new thread if you wish to continue. I shall consider indulging in debates with you there.

Now, back to the original message that I posted in THIS THREAD. If you wish to engage in a meritocratic discussions, argue, if you will, that:

1. King's proclamation was nothing more than an expression of hollow arrogance.

2. SPA should not kow tow to his proclamation if they are to finally prove themselves "janamookhi".

3. Masses in the streets of Kathmandu were not decisively Republican.

Thank you for your kind professionalism and adherance to a respectful debate.

Anil.
