नेपालको विशिष्ट मौलिक इतिहासको जगमा उभिएको नेपाल सम्बतलाइ राष्ट्रीय सम्बतको मान्यता दिनु पर्ने आव्हान गर्दै अभियान सञ्चालन गरेको पुग नपुग २७ बर्ष भए छ । शुरुवातमा नेपाल सम्बतको नाउँ लिने बित्तिकै सार्वजनिक अपराध गरेको आरोपमा जेलमा पुग्ने स्थिति पनि बन्यो । बदख्वाइँ गर्न चाहने जत्थाले नेपाल सम्बतलाइ साम्प्रदायिक सम्बत, कुनै एक जातिको मात्र सम्बत, किंवदन्तिमा आधारीत सम्बत जस्ता अनेक फत्तुर आरोप लगाए । तर त्यसता छुद्र आरोपहरुले नेपालसम्बतको गरीमा घटेन र यो अभियान पनि सेलाएन । समयक्रममा नेपाल सम्बतका प्रणेता शंखधर साख्वा:लाइ राष्ट्रीय विभुतिको मान्यता दिएर सरकारले नेपालसम्बत प्रति सम्मान जनायो । हालै  मन्त्रिपरिषदको बैठकबाट नेपाल सरकारले नेपाल सम्वतलाई राष्ट्रिय सम्वतको मान्यता दिएको छ। यसलाइ ब्यबहारमा लागू गर्न एउटा उच्चस्तरीय कार्यदल पनि गठन गरेको छ । यो निर्णय संभवत माओबादी नेतृत्त्वमा गठीत संयुक्त सरकारको अत्यन्त सकारात्मक र जनभावना मुखरीत गर्ने निर्णय हो । बिगत लामो समय देखि नेपाल सम्बतको पक्षमा आफुलाइ उभ्याउँदै आएको हुँदा म यो निर्णयको स्वागत गर्छु ।

I am 100% agreed with Geology Tiger, I am not against with Nepal Sambat and I do respect this Year. But sometime I feel that we are going back to the old ages like before Prithvi Narayan Shah united Nepal. Today, Nepal Sambat is approved may other Years are comming in near future, and i am sure the other people will do strike on that too. Well, we are still in fighting each other and each others values and cultures, why don't we become united and show our unity to the world.

नेपाल सम्बतको कुरा जातभात सित सम्बन्धित कुरा होइन, र नेपाल सम्बतलाइ संस्कृति हो भन्ने बुझाइ पनि गलत छ । नेपाल सम्बतअनुसार पहिलो महिनाको पहिलो दिन नेपाल सम्बतको नयाँ वर्ष मनाउने चलन अन्य सम्बतको नयाँ वर्ष जस्तै सामान्य चलन हो । हाम्रो तिहार चाड त्यसै सम्बतको वर्षान्तरमा पारेर मनाइन्छ । ती चाडबाडहरु संस्कृति हो, तर सम्बत नै संस्कृति कसरि हुन्छ र ? सम्बत र संस्कृति दुइ फरक कुराहरु हुन । सम्बत समयको मापो हो, संस्कृति त्यो मापोमा आधारीत क्रियाकलाप ।

माथि उल्लेख गरेको निर्णयलाइ मैले जनतालाइ उल्लु बनाउन नेताहरुले गर्ने हर्कतको रुपमा लिएको छैन । किनभने यसअगाडि मन्त्रीमण्डलको बैठकमा नेपाल सम्बतलाइ राष्ट्रीय सम्बत घोषणा गरी त्यसलाइ लागु गर्नको निमित्त कार्यदल गठन गर्ने निर्णय गरेको मलाइ थाहा छैन । नेपाल सम्बतका प्रवर्तक शंखधर साख्वा:लाइ बिभुति घोषणा गर्ने निर्णय मन्त्रीमण्डलबाट पारीत भयो, तर नेपाल सम्बतको विषयमा हालसम्म कुनै ठोस निर्णय भएको थिएन । न मान्यता दिइन्न भनियो, न मान्यता दिइन्छ भनियो । त्यसैले नेपाल सम्बतलाइ मान्यता दिलाउने अभियान जारी नै रह्यो । बरु गिरीजा प्रसाद कोइराला प्रधानमन्त्री हुँदा उनले एउटा सभामा नेपाल सम्बतलाइ छिटै सरकारी काम काजमा प्रयोग गर्ने तर्फ अघि बढ्ने र प्रधान मन्त्रीको लेटरप्याडमा नेपाल सम्बत पनि उल्लेख गर्ने बताएका थिए । सरकारी उच्च ओहदाको ब्यक्तिले सार्वजनिकरुपमा स्पष्ट ब्यक्त गरेको उक्त वाचाले धेरैलाइ प्रफुल्लित बनाएको थियो, तर आधिकारीक निर्णय भएको भने थिएन । प्रधानमन्त्रीको लेटरप्याड कस्तो हुन्छ कहिल्यै देख्न नपाएको हुँदा उनले उल्लु बनाए कि साँच्चै लागू गरे, त्यो मलाइ थाहा भएन ।

ब्यवहारीक प्रयोजनमा नेपालसम्बतले अप्ठेरो श्रृजना गर्ला भन्ने तपाइको जुन आशंका छ, मेरो पनि छ । नेपालसम्बत लागू गर्ने निर्णय जसले गर्छ, उसले यो आशंकाको प्रश्नलाइ सामना गर्नै पर्छ । यो सरकारले त्यो प्रश्नको सामना गर्ने हिम्मत देखाएको छ, जसको म तारीफ गर्छु । यस्तो प्रश्न नउठ्ने र खाली सम्बतै मात्र साटफेर गरे पुग्ने भए नेपाल सम्बतको पक्षमा २७ - २७ बर्ष आन्दोलनरत रहनु पर्ने अवस्था नै आउने थिएन होला । आशा गरौ यो कार्यदलले हामी सवैको आशंका मेट्न सक्दो प्रयास गर्ला ।

नेपाल सम्बतको बारेमा कुरा गर्दा विक्रम सम्बतलाइ मुछ्ने वा दाँज्ने चलन छ । मलाइ त्यसमा रुचि छैन । विक्रम सम्वतले करीव १०० वर्ष नेपालमा सरकारी मान्यता पायो तर साँस्कृतिक मान्यता पाएन । विक्रम सम्बतमा आधारीत साँस्कृतिक चाडपर्वहरुको न्यूनताले त्यहि अर्थ दिन्छ । सम्भवत विक्रम सम्बतमा आधारीत चाडलाइ दशैतिहार भन्दा धुमधामले मनाउनेहरु नेपालमा म र मेरो पुर्खौलि क्षेत्रबाट बसाइ सरेर गएका हरु मात्रै होला । त्यो बेग्लै कुरा छ, तर बिक्रम सम्बतको असान्दर्भिकतालाइ तेर्साएर नेपाल सम्बतको गरीमामाथि प्रश्न उठाउने प्रयास अमिल्दो छ । खास समस्या के हो भने महेन्द्रमालीय बिचार पढेर हुर्केको हाम्रो पुस्ताले नेपाल सम्बतको बारेमा यथेष्ट जानकारी हासिल गर्नै बाँकि छ । जति जति जानकारीहरु उपलब्ध हुँदै जान्छन त्यति त्यति यी कुराहरु प्रष्ट हुँदै जान्छन ।

In its 27-28 years long struggle, there was never a strike or Nepal banda demanding the national recognition. There were peaceful demonstrations and a lot of creative social contributions such as blood donation etc. which were organized together with the movement of demanding national recognition for the Nepal Sambat. The utmost democratic and non-violent movement is the essence of this long-survived movement what I call the evidence of struggle in a highly civilized society. You have to review this whole process from the beginning thoroughly before making a superficial comment and articulate a question if other people will do strike on the similar tread.

The next point, as you wrote - we are going back to the old ages like before Prithvi Narayan Shah united Nepal - is also not logical. What do you mean by the old age? Nepal Sambat is just 1129 years old. AD is 2008 years old. Nepal Sambat is relatively newer than many of other calendars in use. As I mentioned before, there have been efforts to distort the essence of Nepal Sambat projecting it as the Sambat of certain community, repeatition of your words along the same line intends to support the malicious intention. It is rather better to correct your opinion and recognize the Nepal Sambat as the common entity of all nepalese.

It is nothing but Divide and Rule, most of the newar in sajha may not aggree with this but why you guys are trying to emphasize past event. Why do you want to show yourself in good position by showing past events? Agree with one thing that we have nothing except huge water resources. If you are very proud to have something then go and serve the country. Newars are always first to raise communial thought. Because of thier communial thoughts our country is in this situation right now. If someone come and ask me that why your contry is very poor, the only answer that we  have is because of communial Newars who spread communial thoughts all over the country.

It's nice that Nepal Samvat has got its deserved recognition as the national Samvat of the country. However, I find the news pretty unclear about what the role of the newly declared national samvat will be, whether there can exist more than one national samvats, and what the country is going to do with the existing one. The information minister has probably said that the calenders presently in use will continue to remain in use.

Personally, I would prefer the use of the international calender for all practical purposes, rather than having Nepal Samvat replace the role of Bikram Samvat as a practical calender. Meaning, it'd be easier to have NS being used as a symbolic national samvat rather than a practical one appearing in day2day business.  And, with Nepal Samvat taking the status of the national samvat, I don't think we'll be needing Bikram Samvat for any purpose in the long run. It will take a generation or so to effectively switch to a new calender, though.

I'd like to add a note on Chanaa ji's comment  regarding efforts to distort the essence of Nepal Sambat 'projecting it as the Sambat of certain community'. Well, for most of the people other than the valley locals, NS and its celebrations do look like something local to the valley commuity only. This is partly due to the failure of the organizers of the celebrations that go during the NS new year to make them seem more inclusive and of 'national' outlook. For a non-local, the celebrations seem totally intermingled with the language movement, with, for example, rarely any banners and playcards bearing the mesaage in the national language, and any recitals and wishes made in a broader way. The organizers should take care of these things now as it's a national new year. It's difficult to fight perceptions than to fight an intended opposition.

And.. maalpaani ji, I don't understand why anyone would wish to switch to Buddha Samvat, because 'it has been successfully used in Thailand'..

How many of you know that today is New Year day in India based on Bikram Samvat as well? New Year begins on first day of Kartik which is also the day following Deepawali Amaavasya (Lakshmi Puja) in India.  It is based on lunisolar calendar.  In contrast we celebrate New Year of Bikram Samvat on first day of Baishakh, 6 months earlier than India.

Lunar calendar is scientific as much as solar calendar. It is based on position of moon in its orbit relative to the Earth whereas solar calendar is based on position of the Earth relative to the Sun. Centuries and centuries ago, when there was no  â€œPatro”, “Bhitte Calendar” or such thing, people can determine what day of the month or year looking at the moon in clear sky at night, and you still can do it today.  No moon on the sky,-Ammavasya follows by full moon on the sky-Purnima in 14 days. It would not be possible to determine such thing based on the Sun.

Friends, let’s talk about technical difficulties. Do you realize that you have been celebrating Dashain, Tihar and all other festivals of Nepal based on the lunar calendar? Do you realize that your birth chart “China/Chino” is based on lunar calendar? How difficult it was for you to know the Navaratri in Dashain and Lakshmi Puja in Tihar? What makes you think that it is not possible to use lunar calendar? I think it is only excuse of being lazy and not exploring other possibilities. If you are in US right now, do you still try to calculate in your head wondering how many litters of petrol you have put in your car dividing the number of gallons of gas you’ve just filled in by 3.78 (roughly 4)? Do you still try to multiply the miles you have drove to work by 1.6 to know how many kilometers you’ve just drove?

Nepal Samvat is just a count of years initiated by Sankhadhar Sakhwa. He did not invent the lunar calendar neither did king Bikramaditya. It was already there in place, and used in day to day life in the region. Sankhadhar Sakhwa is an ordinary man unlike Bikramaditya who is a king. Nepal Samvat is named after a country unlike Bikram Samvat and other Samvats named after rulers or religions.  In 1903 AD, Chandra Shamsher replaced the Nepal Samvat with Bikram Samvat.  It is very unfortunate that only the Newars of Kathmandu valley were raising voice against it.

If Chandra Samsher can use Bikram Shamvat and make Baisakh as first month of the year, why can’t we make Kartik as first month of the year and replace the Bikram Samvat 2065 with Nepal Samvat 1129? Keep the month names same as  Baishakh, Jesth, Ashadh, etc. if it is that difficult to use the lunar calendar.  It is not going back to the past, if you don’t understand it, lower the number of the year, newer it is. In this sense Nepal Samvat is newer than Bikram Samvat.  It is just one option among several. Friends, everything is possible, just need to explore in depth. Let’s make our identity stronger first, make our map stand out, before getting lost from the world map on the name of globalization.

Nothing against Nepal Samvat but don't you all think that changing all this calender is goanna cost money, lots and lots of money.  Money, that can be spent on many other good causes like education, poverty etc.  Excuse me for sounding little arrogant but honestly I don’t give a damn if my birthday is celebrated in lunar or solar calendar. 

We don’t have enough electricity to celebrate our festival of lights Dipawali, don’t have enough cooking gas on Dashai, in most part of Katmandu there shortage of water, still many people have to buy gas(petrol) in black market and half of country (Terai) is still facing insurgency.  There are tons of other things to be fixed in Nepal before we start thinking about changing our calendar. 

अरे Jonny दाजु, तु बर्थडे भि मनाता है क्या ? कबसे तुझे बर्थडे का याद आने लगा ? अच्छा चलो अगर बर्थडे मना भि लिया तो यह कालेण्डर सालेण्डर के चक्करमेँ क्यूँ फँस्ने का ? हाँ ? जब चाहे मना लो, इसमे दिक्कत कि बात क्या है ?

और जो वह पैसेका बात आपने कहा, उसको चिन्ता आप मत लो । हमार देशका बजेट देखा है आपने ? पुरे के पुरे १७ अर्व रुपैया तो माओबादी लोगोंके खर्चा भर्नेके लिए रखा है । उसपर चिन्ता किजिए, देशके लिए अच्छा होगा, यह क्यालेण्डर वालेण्डर के मामले मे तो २-४ करोड भि खर्चा नहिँ है ।

f*** Nepal sambat. Its not about whether king started or the people started the calender. I find it easy in Bikram Sambat and I am sure majority of Nepalse find it easy in BS. There is no need to bring Nepal sambat only because it has " Nepal" in it.  Its more about what people really find easier to deal with.

For me Bikram Sambat is very dear and close to me, and I can't think anything other than it .

But this will only bring racial division between people in nepal..

So if I accept Newari calander is nepali calander, will I have to learn to speak Newari too.. Bullshit!!!

I am not in favor of appeasing one group of people, I think the policitican's are using race group castism as their weapon, cause that is what INDIA wants, they want to devide the people in nepal so they can have their monopoly in NEPAL.

If this goes through than the Terai People will use other calander, People in Hills will use different one, so will western and eastern people, How many fu*king calanders do we have to use???? Newars are not special people of Nepal, they are only Rich..

आप २० बरस पहले नेपाल गया, और हम १५ बरस पहले गया । आपका बाप ने उधर जमिन जायदात और घर भि बनालिया, हम तो अभि भि डेरा मै हि हुँ । इस १५ साल नेवारके घरमे डेरामे रहेते रहेते हम नेवार का बहुत सारे बात जान चुका हुँ ।

इण्डियाके क्यालेण्डर बिक्रम सम्बत नेपालमे चन्द्र समसेर ने १९६० मे लाया था, उससे पहेला जो भि सरकारी कामकाज और सन्धि होता था उसमे नेपालसम्बतका हि उपयोग हुआ था । उसबखत वह बिक्रम सम्बत लानेके साथसाथ हमने पर्वते भाषा छोडकर उज्जैनका भाषा बोललिया ? नहि बोला ना ? तोह, नेपाल सम्बतको स्वीकार करने से आपको नेवारी भाषा कौन सिखाता है ? यह एक बात हुइ । दुसरा, नेपाल सम्बत नेवार लोगोंका सम्बत जो आपको लगता है, वह विलकुल गलत है । बस नेवार लोगों ने इस सम्बत बचानेके लिए थोडा काम किया है । अगर आप इस सम्बतके अनुसन्धान कर्नेवाले इतिहासविदको नाम देखे तो मालुम पडेगा कि उसमे से बहुत सारे नेवार लोग नहि है । सिल्भा लेभि, बालचन्द्र शर्मा, बाबुराम आचार्य, डेनियल राइट, कमलप्रकाश मल्ल, गुणानन्द पण्डित, कनिङघम, भुवनलाल प्रधान, काशीनाथ तमोट, योगि नरहरीनाथ, आदि जो हे वह नेवार लोगोके लिए काम कर्नेवाला आदमि नहि थे । यह सवका सव बरिष्ठ इतिहासविद हे, जिसने आप और मैने से भि अधिक जानकारी हासिल किया है । इसिलिए अगर आप इस सम्बतको नेवारके सम्बत मानते है तो प्रोब्लेम आपका हि अन्दर है । आपका अपना गौरवशाली सम्बत ना होनेके लघुताभाष है । नेवार लोग तो चालाख है, उनने नेपालसम्बतको बचानेके लिए संघर्ष किया और उसिमेँ गौरव किया ।

बिक्रम सम्बतमै ऐसा क्या चीज है जिसके लिए आप लोग, बिशेष त: बाहुन लोग इतना प्यार दिखाता है ? हाँ यह बात सहि है कि जबसे बिक्रम सम्बत नेपाल मेँ आया, बाहुन लोगोंका उन्नति हि उन्नति हुआ, फिर भि बिक्रम सम्बत बाहुनका सम्बत तो नहि है ना? बिक्रम सम्बत तो नेपालमे किसि कि भि सम्बत नहि है । फिर क्यूँ उसके पिछे पडकर अपने आपको मजाक बना रहे है आप ?
