Last Friday night on Nov 13th 2009, an apartment block caught fire at University Green Apartment in Clear Lake, Texas. A total of 12 units were totally destroyed in this fire. Among these, two units were those of our Nepali families with kids. Fortunately, everybody was safe. However, they lost all their belongings and hence they need help to meet basic needs.
We are hoping and requesting for your help and support for these two displaced family. They need the help right now. Please let us all come together to give a starting point to re-build their lives all over again and help spiritually and financially.

I really do not know. I just saw this link on facebook and posted it in Sajha. It is sad and hopefully they will be able to raise some funds for the victims.
hey there lakhe..i would like to tell you that those family who lost there home were my aunts but sorry that i cannot enclose there names.. and my family is one of the family who lives in this apartment complex. i am new to Sajha just signed in today....
I don't wanna sound absurd... but c'mon people this is too much.... I know it must be hard for the families and all but....you guys are in america and probably the units are insured and they might be able to get some money out of it..........they should have a decent job and all coz they are in USA..... on top of that they sound fortunate and might have a green card... the US government might have some program for fire victims......
If you really wanna help why not help the flood victims of nepal or the orphans from the 12 year of violence.... or maybe buy books to millions of kinds in nepal who don't go to school...these people in nepal live below the poverty line and they don't have credit cards, no money in the bank and they can't even have houses.......
So please don't sound so pathetic...... if you wanna stand up for the cause then do something meaningful.....
Again, it was a terrible thing that happened to the nepali family in texas.
i live in the same apartment complex different unit then that was burned.i saw from my own eyes the whole unit burnt down; people screaming and crying.i heard that there are lot of nepali families living in this complex, but i hardly seen any. anyways my full sympathy to all the families residing in the unit.
My wholehearted sympathy to the families. Have they thought of contacting a local Nepalese society and ask them to do a nation-wide help campaign. In the past, Nepalese people have been united in helping a fellow Nepali in need. The Paypal site by itself does not look credible. If you could put an association behind it, maybe people would be more apt to giving to this dire cause.
There is also a disaster relief program through the Association of Nepalese in America (www.ana-online.com). You may want to contact Mr. Shimon Dhungana, the President of ANA, and he could steer you to a positive direction.
@Blingbling: If you disagree with someone, you can just say you disagree with it and not make up an excuse like "I'm not trying to be absurd but..." because the statement you made was already absurd. You didn't need to give it an excuse. We are an open forum in a civilized society. It is my hope that we understand there are dissent to situations.
With that said--a fire is a fire, whether in Nepal or America. These folks need help, and please give them unconditional support in this time of crisis.
Okay let me make myself clear...... you tell me what has ANA done in the past that would make it stand out in the Nepali community ? Except for parties with expensive prices... and can you tell me where the money goes ?
I didn't said I don't have sympathy for the victims... but we are in USA... we have a lot of opportunity than most of the people in NEPAL... All I am saying is if you stand for a cause make it sound like you really mean it ..........if there is fire then there is salvation army , red cross society........ and of course there is insurance........ they can easily make out of it.....
BTW doctorbee, when was the last time you shown sympathy to people of nepal who went through so much shit and you were busy earning dollars working in a gas station......what about the thousands who lost their houses in flood, what about the 100 who died in a bus accident and how about the thousands who lost their parents in maoist insurgency .... what about them....
where was ANA when those things happen ? just don't pretend that you care....... it's easy for those families to overcome these calamities if they are in the USA.....
BTW why are you advocating ANA ? because ANA caters the interest of your in laws and your friends so that they can cater your interest ?? really ???
I am not making a statement... I was just telling the truth....and if I sound absurd please forgive me.....
so you belong to civilized society ?? if I can't express my opinion and you have problem with my freedom of speech how come you are civilized ??? this is a public forum and I have the right to say what I feel... now that's civilized....
if you are really that concerned why don't you donate $400 or anything and I promise to match your contribution.....
what? want donation but don't want to publish name? never heard of it. Without a full needed story how do we know how much to donate? there are always good helps from red cross insurance etc since they are in US not in nepal. Well I might be wrong but how the hell would I know? .. not my fault since you are blocking the information.
First of all, thanks for expressing your opinion freely. A candid and frank discussion can definitely lead to success at any forum.
I am not here to defend ANA's practices. Considering I have been to the ANA Convention several times, I have seen a lot of money flow into the convention, but not much seems to come out of it. However, they have made tremendous efforts to contact the diaspora and be more reachable in the past few years. To illustrate some of the current and past projects they have undertaken, you can go to their web site:
(That list also includes the Koshi flood victims--an issue you seem to be very concerned about)
Even though their transparency has not been great, they are still a credible resource for the family in Texas. ANA represents Nepali people, and using it as a resource in time of need has no negatives to it.
Second of all, there's a widely spread myth that "Everyone with a greencard or everyone in the United States is well off and folks in the United States have a better life". Better opportunity, yes. Better freedom, yes. Better life? Not necessarily. Not for everyone at least. I have seen countless families that are very unhappy with their situation in the United States. You can't just make a generalized statement regarding this.
Third of all, I don't want to stay here and defend all the goods (or bads) I have done. I don't want to defend my personal character in this either. It's no one's business on how I express my care and concerns about the people of Nepal and how I decide to help someone. I will tell you, however, that my family members lost their house and had to relocate because of the flood. Once again, this goes to the point about making a generalized statement about everyone that is in the United States. You're in the US, and I'm sure you've seen that not everyone has a generalized lifestyle in America. It is no El Dorado with golden streets and prosperity everywhere for everyone. We all have different stories.
Lastly, these families need our support, and not arguments saying they don't have it bad, and that folks have it worse. They don't deserve comparison, they deserve support.
(P.S. I am not going to place a bet with with you @BlingBling. If you feel like you can donate that much money to a cause, please be free to do it. It'll be for the good.)
I pray for those families at this hard time. And I am responding only with Blingbling's first response the content related to this thread. "units are insured" as Blingbling mentioned. My previous Apt Complex management required me to insure the apartment as required by the lease. And this recent Apartment I live in, it is not required but still I insured it. I have insured with only $18 dollar a month and you can have coverages up to $55,000 to $60,000. I am just clearing Blingbling's statement.
i agree with blingbling. Guys US is a land of opportunities. instead of helping the rich get back to his standards dont u think helping poor to survive would be better option. help those ppl who are starving to death and have no opportunities at all. atleast these ppl are in us. fire, i am sure did not take their jobs.
just my thought . well if we could help those ppl out there live just another day with a smile back in nepal would be wonderful. if u search u will see hundreds of ppl . i have even seen ppl outside bir hospital who wish to live just another day but are ignored because they cant afford health care, medi etc. i am sure these fire victims will be taken care by the apartment ppl.
i am not trying to discourage ur sympathy towards them but just putting in my thought about other more needy ppl then these fire vistims.
and it begins - on Day 1 Trump will begin operations to deport millions of undocumented immigrants
Travel Document for TPS (approved)
All the Qatar ailines from Nepal canceled to USA
