I had promised that I was going to start my own thread regarding stock investments and the markets. So many things have happened since last time I was here and I really do not feel like sharing my knowledge. But a promise is a promise and there have been few people that have emailed me and supported me.

This thread will deal with investing in the stock markets. I will not discuss individual stocks but discuss ETFs like SPY, DIA, IWM and QQQQ. The one good thing about trading ETFs compared to individual stocks is the the ETFs provide instant diversification among similar companies within the same sector.

I will post more as we go along, regarding entry-price, profit-target and stop-losses. I do not think that any ETF is good or bad. It is good only if I'm making money and bad if I'm losig money.

If you have not been in the market so far, please read this as an information piece only rather than my recommendations. There is risk involved and you should know how much risk to take on any position.

Any suggestations, comments and criticisms are welcome as long as it is market related. If this thread gets out of hand and we start discussing off-topics, I'll stop posting.

Have a happy new year!!!! May 2007 bring you and your family lots of joys and riches.

Good Morning all,

we are indeed going forward this week with the stocks. JDO was a bargain, and probably am on emini's side to have it as a summer play. Probably adding more as I see the sock moving up.

On the energy side, the solar sector will do well. ESLR inclusive.I heard they have lots of back orders to fill.

Emini is I had a question about .OB. I tried buying cvdt.OB but could not get, coz the Ameritrade does not recognize it as a stock. Please fill me in more on this. I understand that it is foreign company, is that right?

Since, you are taking off from the Market, I guess, I wanna wish you a happy vacation. Thanks much for the suggested books, I shall have those in the mail soon and also by the time you come back from your vacation, I would try and make some sensible talks. *smile*

Yes, Ayn Rand and the Randism is one hot selling cake amongst Wall St peeps. In fact if the Vice President reads it twice every year, he does so for a reason. I did my part of reading, enzoied it, learned off it and apply it, just like yourself.

Best~!

-B

ps should I strengthen my position with JOD by adding more to the kitty which is trading below the entry price you calculated?

hello there,

am getting into ASTI and ESLR before the bell rings.

Also, it is a short term investing, buy and hold proposition.

Best~!

Bri: Look at the RR. Some of these have gone up and might not provide the same RR. With Bulletin board stocks(ie. .OB), you have to use a limit price or something like that. Call Ameritrade customer Support.

wait for pullbacks, make sure the RR > 3.

I won't be doing much today.

Aman: Any broker will offer you real time prices.

TT: If I am in East Coast, we'll get some coffee.

Emini,
got out of ESLR... still hold ASTI... basically my first take was to go with the industry, then I pulled back and choose better one of the two competitor... I know RR was way away for these two. And you are right on it!. Also, I got into more of JDO. And it is my play too now.

Team Player, I would hold onto China stocks for now. Play it safe hai na.

Good luck to all traders.

Best~!

Emini ji,

have couple of Qs for ya!

why do we see big swing in value of stocks towards the last hour?

What is ideally the best time of the day to go on Sell mode?

Tell me more about day-trading that dictates the market, please. I wonder what are the vested interest in parties involved to drive huge changes in value?

Today was blood bath for my monies. I enzoied it as I learnt some. I know you have several times prescribed to be defensive. I kinda now agree with it. It is all about experiencing it, hai na?

so now we hold this JDO till it goes green, right?

MY choice between ASTI and ESLR were flawed. I was taking chances on inconclusive data. I shall get in the money with them both only when they go around 8ish or so.

Thanks Much for reading.

Best~!

There is a large swing during the open and close because most of the volume is traderd in the 1st and last hour. Volume drives prices. There is no ideal time to buy or sell if you are not trading intraday. Daytrading dictates some but not a whole lot. It is the buying/selling of big funds that drive the prices not you and me.

Focus on executing the strategy. Don't be too greedy and don't be too excited. Learn to control your risks. Bet small. Our goal is to make small consistent money in the long run not necessarily hit a jackpot, if we hit one we'll take it but that is not our goal. Do not daytrade, you'll lose more in commissions. 90% of the day-trades lose.

We are staying with JDO unless it goes below our stop-loss price, then we'll sell it, take the loss and look for another opportunity. Our stop loss price is $1.40. If you bought a lot of shares and think that you will lose more than of 5% of your total money if it goes to $1.40, then sell some right now. Sell it so that you can sleep at night.

Here are last 3 rules.
1. Preserve your capital.
2. Preserve your capital.
3. Remember Rule 1 & 2.

I'm leaving tomorrow so this is the last post. Good Luck. Remember the market is always going to be here. Be patient, learn the game, BET SMALL, play great defence.

xix ji,

it is funny with JDO... but with all due respect hats off to Emini for this particular pick. It is going to get there. Just be patient. HOLD is my recommendation. Long term though.

My blood bath was with IPOs. CLWR and ARUN. Still I sud have HOLD the latter. Wrong decision. But that is how it goes.

Learning is fun. But learning out of others mistake, is more advisable!

What else do you have for your picks Xix ji.

Best!

emini if you read this. I am disappointed with you. Becoz you forget to leave behind your summer-read-list for books. *smile*

xix,

being scared is not at all part of this stock play. You gotta be strong. Here are few things to take away.

Do not be on the screen all the time. Since it is a long term investment, you can have a peek at your score every once in a while. Possibly do not keep the trading browser open all the time. Take it easy.

First you will hafto make some monies. That will give you some courage and leverage to move forward.

Again, please read what Emini has written in terms of philosphies for stock trading. He comes from a very experienced background apt to the cultural settings at Sajha. Read his posts throughly and your will get all the answers.

CVDt.ob I did not get into, coz I did not know how to buy it off Ameritrade... Any tips.

Best!

I didn't get CVDT.OB either when I put it in order overnight. But when I tried during market hours, it came into my account. You can't put market price, go with limit.

BTW, I am also in Atrade.

I agree with ur statement. Thanks for your tips.

There were some news about JDO today, not really positive. The news generated a little sell-off but not much. Move your stop to $2.20. If it goes below $2.20 take your loss.

For example: If you bought 100 shares at $2.60 with a stop at $1.40, you were risking $120. Now you need to move your stop to $2.20, so that your maximum loss is $40. If you can handle your original risk, double down with a stop below $2.20. This way if it goes up, you'll make twice as much and if you lose, you'll lose less than your original risk money.

We are not sure how this market will react to the news tomorrow so be cautious.

Thanks Emini.

So you too are advising along the lines of Cramers 10-10-10 percent sell-to corresponding 10-10-10 decrease in value of stock.

Something like that but not exactly so. IE playing with the risk.

What is the bad news for tomorrow though?

Best!
