I love giving exams. It drains my brains out. I stop eating properly, my sleeps are disturbed and my whole routine messed up. I lose weight. LOL. That is the story of the end of my semesters. I have a full time job so I barely go to college and I have to do self studies. I am not complaining since this is what I have chosen for myself.

( First a special mention to Lamps, Karnali_Blues, Mercynova, Rahulvai Uncle and Neo for keeping me company in sajha chat while I was going through my books last night. If it was not for these guys, I would have dozed off as early as 10pm and it would have been Irrepairable, so thank you all!!)

Today morning before setting off for the exams, mum oh how religious!! puts bibhuti on my forehead and gave me subhasagun Dahi and like always said “ Jati pardheko chas tyo bhanda dherai lekhera aaulas” ( I always roll my eyes after this statement).

Finally inside the hall, I don’t know anyone, so basically I am on my own. Around 40 students in one room, there was aunty from the bank, who is doing this course to get a promotion, another dai from army who is also fighting for a promotion to be a Colonel, Mother of two kids doing her masters to get a degree and so on. Most of the ladies looked pretty decent and seems studious and were reading the books until right before the exams unlike me.

I had no armor, no shield, no weapons in the form of small coded writings on papers. I am a chicken, I can’t cheat. My conscience doesn’t let me. I sweat like a pig if I have to. I have no guts to take codes to the exam hall, Never. Anyway when the bell rang, I knew exactly how much time I have and how much time I have to give each question. A case study of 40 credits, I ll do it in 1 hour 20 minutes and rest 3 choice questions each of 20 marks within ½ hour plus minus. And remaining 10 minutes for reading the questions and revising at the end. All planned and all set.

I am not a distinction holder but I am smart to manage my time. Anyway, losing no more time, I started writing my paper. And my fingers hurt, lack of writing speed and practice. So every 20 minute I took a break for couple of seconds, stretch and look around who is doing what. Man was I not shocked, everyone was copying, LITERALLY Copying. One got a big stack of paper inside her kurta’s falls. Another lady got a big piece of rectangle paper right clasped between her folded two legs. The worse was the lady sitting two rows ahead of me, copying everything from her smartphone ( we are asked not to bring phones to the exam center, and even if we bring we have to switch it off).

Now the dilemma was whether to get up and tell the invigilator “HEY THEY GOT CHEATS, KICK THEM OUT, CANCEL THEIR EXAMS!!!”, or sit down tolerate it and do what I got to do. I studied all night pestering my online friends to not let me sleep, mugged 3 books in one night, got dark circles and headache in the morning JUST to pass this exam and here the ladies are all copying so shamelessly.( Nope the idea of cheating never crossed my mind)

In a “twaaa” state of mind, I called my mum after the exams and said “ Mama, I might just pass but I have honestly earned it. You should be proud of my B plus grades”. I am sure she has rolled her eyes this time…LOL.

I think you are very talented in skillfully putting your thoughts in the words. It's always a delight to read your threads. I think that you really have a potential of becoming a very good writer in future. But, as some have pointed out, I too have noticed numerous grammatical errors in this one as well as in your previous articles. These errors made me feel like "mitho khana khada khadai bich ma dhunga chapaye jastai". But I was too lazy to comment on these earlier. You need to work on your English writing skill a bit especially on your grammar and vocabulary. Please don't take me negatively but instead, I request you to take this as my constructive criticism. I hope that you are able to take positive as well as not so positive feedback. But, as I already mentioned, I find your stories delightful to read.

Efg,
Thank you so much for your constructive criticism....I am still learning to write so I know I am not even 4 out of 10 yet.
Like I have already mentioned there are ways to deliver things to people..... I am a very peace loving person and I believe in live and let live.... but if a cat tries to cross my path.... I make sure that it is its last time ..... If you know what I mean *grins*

I was about to stop reading when I first saw "I love giving exams". But, since I saw flood of comments, thought of giving it a try. (Forgive my ignorance if the writing is sarcastic expression of the majority of Indian subcontinent English speakers)

As Seucy and fantush mentioned earlier; "loved the content but not the writing". But, honestly, would love to read more from you.

PS: I am a Nepal ko sarkari school ko product who barely scored pass mark on English in SLC exams a decade back.

Ambroisa baini's post rekindle many of my memories.

I was one of the "cheaters." I had different innovative way of cheating and one of the best was writing formulae on a big eraser. If somebody sees the eraser and asks for it, the plan was to rub it in one swipe of the thumb as I hand the eraser over. Never came to that. Many would write it in the back/inside of a calculator, palm etc and some would stash a book in the toilet.

As I came to US, I realized this epidemic is not as prevalent. The community college I went to had some instances of similar cheating, but the universities, specially the higher ranked ones, had almost non existent cheating going on. One of the big reason could be our education system. We give too much value to the ability of memorizing. Here, most of my courses were open book so what's the need to cheat? Having open book exams require instructors to be creative and ask questions that measure the depth of understanding. I am hoping that schools in Nepal have started adapting to this change.

Now some might say even the higher ranked Unis have this problem. Just the other day there was a big news about cheating and grades adjustment in Harvard. Many grade schools here have been accused of inflating the grades to get states grants. I guess the issue is here as well, but I am specifically referring to students bringing a cheat as in this story to the exam hall. It's going to be hard to change student's behavior overnight. Why don't we "fix" the education system and encourage open book/note exam with better designed questions?

Kiddo,
Thank you so much for sharing your thought. We can have open book exams once we will have teachers who can creat and evaluate such questions. Lol..... changes are there but in snail pace.
