In the early '90s, there was this first Nepali electronic newsletter called The Nepal Digest (TND). It was started by Rajpal Singh in Illinois, and, for a time, was a widely circulated ONLY one electronic newsletter among Nepalis about Nepal.

Every week, TND came to your inbox as an email, filled with news about Nepal with occasional views/debates/discussions of fellow Nepalis from around the world (though for some reason, US-based Nepalis tended to be more vocal than Nepalis elsewhere).

TND started to lose its charm when The Kathmandu Post and other Nepali newspapers started putting up their Web sites. People started getting their news directly from
Nepal.

This led to a greater demand for news analyses as opposed to mere news reportage from electronic sources.

Soc.Culture.Nepal (SCN), a Usenet group, fulfilled that demand up to a point in the late 1990s. Unlike TND, which was an editor-collated product with its own weekly cycle,
SCN allowed users to post their comments and analyses and get almost-instant feedbacks from anyone wanting to respond to postings. This led to lively, if
occasionally acrimonious, exchanges of views.

One major practical downside of SCN was its totally unmoderated nature. Often Indians and Pakistanis would cross-post their various unrelated-to-Nepal jhagada on SCN.
And wading through their dross to get to Nepal-related stuff eventually became a boring and tiring chore for most SCN users.

Then came Sajha.com at the start of this century. It combined the best of SCN features
with loose moderation. This kept the Indian and Pakistani cross-posters out, and allowed pretty much Nepali-only to post their views.

Sajha's flagship section -- the kurakani section -- took off after the Royal Massacre of 2001. Later, easy-to-use chatrooms and word-of-mouth publicity helped bring in many other Nepalis to the site. A diversity of visitor's postings helped make the site interesting and 'sticky' (some say: addictive) for most visitors.

Now, in 2005, the electronic communication/info sharing process appears to have entered a new phase with the rise of Nepal-related blogs.

In the past few months, many excellent Nepal-related blogs have come up. Some of the blogs are group-blogs; some are sustained individually. Some have great fresh news contents. Others are well-written and well-presented. A few are merely entertaining. But altogether, they ARE siphoning attention -- the most precious commodity -- away from Sajha.

As a well-wisher of Sajha, I think the time has come for Sajha to redefine its mission and and differentiate itself from its 'competitors'.

What is Sajha for in these changing times?

For news?
For views?
For debates?
For announcing community events?
For sharing the photos of community events?
For social activism?

Other well-wishers of Sajha and San himself must start thinking ahead so that Sajha -- in these times of rapidly changing technologies -- does not suffer the fate of its predecessors.

Something to think about.

Ke ko halla khalla ho? Dherai samaya pachi purano mitra haruko anuhar dekhna paiyo ni !!

Talking about this thread.....

Sajha does not have any missions besides bringing together Nepali people in the internet. Besides that, the only other mission and goal is to spread the message of peace, love and harmony among us if possible; and to promote the Live and Let Live philosophy."

That's the way to go Sanji. I truly admire your dedication, commitment, diligence and enthusiasm.

Trikal....

It's good that so many people think that Sajha is fine the way it is.

Still, just as -- to use an extreme analogy -- Nepal's democracy vanished when netas were busy assuring themselves that there was no way King could assert his power,
let's at least keep a 10 per cent chance open that Sajha might end someday soon.

I say that not as a negative comment.

But to make sure that collectively we do NOT become complacent, lazy, rest on
past laurels and believe our own mutual 'wah-wahs' about the site.

Tetti ho.

Ashu, your concerns are right at certain places.. but again who is immortal and what is immortal..hoina...I am sure as long as people like u and nepe and Jira and Sitara and GP and other well wishers are around, i am sure sajha will be fine...( San le bolya jasto ta bhayena hai)..hehe

but i do think you have brought forth a valid and reasonable thought.

Ani aru ke cha..

San dai, I've been a sajha user for a long time now. I 've been living in boston for a long time now as well. I vivdly rememberhow hard it was to meet nepali people in boston before I became familiar with sajha. One day I stumbled upon this site and I can it truly has impacted my life a great deal. Growing up in boston as a kid I didnt get the opportunity to make nepali friends or even be involved in nepali culture. Since I became a registered user in sajha I've had the opportunity to meet many friends not only in boston but all over the country. I believe this site gave me the opportunity to aslo be more involved in our great nepali culture. I truly believe Bringing Together Nepali Communities is the heart and soul purpose of this site. Personally I've known San dai for a long and I can he's a great person. I think the sajha's success is due to San dai invison and his ability to make everyone feel at home in here. I know sajha will persevere even in our fast changing world simply because like Nepal, we can always call it our home.

YO AssUtoss,
Do Ahh sense a bit-o-jelousy here ? Your analogy of the Netas of Nepal and this site is incongruous. Why the fug you want to see the end of Sajha(OR AT LEAST 10%) ? You are talking as if you would like to take the position of running this site yourself he he Besides i don't see no laurels or wah wah anywhere.
And why the fug are you comparing this site with others again ? This is what is wrong with all o u's. I don't think the person running this site is trying to follow any trend ...He is just trying to do his own thing. Except for extremists nobody has a problem with it. But you being Mr Smarty pants" I am Harvard" had to throw this thorn in there didn't you ?

If Sajha's survival meant the NUMBER of it's users, then, I think, Sajha is the last Nepali site at the moment that should be worrying about it's survival.

The only thing Sajha might undergo, is going or rather appears to have gone, is the change in it's demographic PROFILE.

The only challenge for Sajha to retain/gain/regain/ most diverse portfolio, in my view, is to find ways to keep indecent and irresponsible posters away. Sajha has not succeeded in this front. However, so have not other Nepali sites with anonymous users in them.

Challenge, if any, therefore, might come from the sites that employ mechanism to keep "indecent and irresponsible posters" away, like "nepaldemocracy@googlegroups.com" does.

However, no sites can beat Sajha when it comes catering it's service to diverse groups of users. So I think Sajha's future is not bleak at all. And if it can come up with some creative ways to minimize indecent and irresponsible postings in Kurakani, it has the brightest future of all.

Nattu my dear! If you post a well thought out writing, I will post my reply on that too. You see time is the essence here. Do I want to waste my time on some confused ramblings? Do I want to give my valuable time (ahem) to some one's deranged diatribe? Hell,no!

please insert a smilye after the above paragraph, phateko kattu.

Sajha is a ?highschool?

It is a classroom filled with various different kinds of children, and a teacher which is an admin (not one who teaches but dictates)

Here are some examples of Sajha?s Entities:

Bokas,
Chwaks,
Jelousness
Proud ness
Pride ness
Fat
Thin
Ignorance
Intellectuals
Wishing to be Intellectuals
Liars
Honesty
Natakars
Egoists
And many more. Can you think of some? Just like a highschool classroom.

Conclusion is:

Sajha is a nice social gathering, even great! I don?t think it hopes to be anything more than that. It has its own "group" and materializes on its own group. Sajha talks about beautiful girls, ANA Sucks, Who has her number?, and things that just seem to blow in the wind. JUST LIKE A TYPICAL HIGHSCHOOL! ;)

For one to think if any good is to be learn in Sajha, from my point of view is a transparent mistake. It is not a path to self discovery, valid and good discussions, or of great views. It is just a place where you can meet people, and talk about sensible things that amount to nonsense. You know what I mean?

Whatever is posted in Sajha, to sum it in one word is Public Opinion. As people claim this site to be diverse and unique, they naively say so (opinion), because every other forum that floats around the internet is as same as Sajha.

How long will it exist?

As long as it?s loyal visitors keep on visiting. If admin wants to keep the site alive, he needs to carefully understand his costumer?s needs. (Economics) He has been doing it for a great deal, and people have been swayed away with it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not intent to hurt anyone's sensitive emotions, I just wanted to express my OPINION.

I used to be a frequent visitor of this site, but nowadays I just sneek in at times.

If there is anything that grants full democracy, liberty and equal oppurtunity to Nepalese race, it is without doubt SAJHA KURAKANI. Thats why it is popular and that is exactly what San needs to keep intact.

Let everyone with as many varied behaviours, ideas and interests post their opinions in sajha. For me, any restrictions except those already in force are unwanted. All the sajhaites are grown up and able to decide what turns them on and off.
