Gurkhas have been fighting as part of the British Army for almost 200 years, but who are these fearsome Nepalese fighters?

Birbhadra dude. don't be like this. who said Gurkhas are not brave anymore. Didn't you know that Gurkha died in Kosovo in 1999. Gurkhas was spearheading the NATO during Kosove campaign in 1999. Gurkhas spearheaded the Multi-National Force in East timor in 1999. Gurkhas are now based in Afghan and Iraq presently. They would not dishonor their father's name, trust me dude. The training, the tought training are still the same as previous Gurkhas.

Birbhadra, so you think Gurkkha/Gorkhas ( Rai, Limbu,Magar, Gurung, magar. )are stupid ? Regarding the bravery and loaylity, well, I do have to admit that the new generation of Gurkhas lack of those qualities which so much impressed the British.

no i don't think the MAGURALIs are stupid in fact my family friend is a doctor. however they are too simple and down to earth for todays world. and you would have to admit they are not very politically aware. i would like to see more MAGURLI in nepali politics to counterbalance the bahuns who have monopoly in politics. i did not say gurkhas are not brave what i meant was any soldier is brave. if they are coward they wouldn't join the force. will they?

BirBhadra.....Name ........Bir???? and who said chettrys are not in the British army?? Dude dont just write stuff that you have no knowledge of....Bauns are deffinately not included but The chettrys fought the Britons defending Nepal...Gorkha.....gurungs rai and magar came later and became more involved due to their own active partipation in the tryouts. As for being Brave or not.........???? your comment is just a mere suggestive comment......Read the History buddy....and also their active role around the world today, Representing us.

well i haven't seen any chettris being recruited by the britons in nepal. my chettri friend changed his last name to a magar to try out. if they have changed their policy recently then it is a different story. i am not tallking about nepali soldiers who fought for nepal against britons i am talking about GURKHAS who are in the bristish army i don't have to read history. are you implying that american or indian or others are less brave than gurkhas. i strongly disagree.

Birbhadra, why include MAGURALIs, when I specifically mentioned Rai. Limbu, Magar, Gurung and Tamang ? Beside to me, juts becos one is doctor does not mean that he is intelligent and has wealth of knowledge.

By the way do GURKHAS represent the Nepali Nation in British Army (which really makes all proud) or they are just as other types of foreign employed wage earners (Jagire), although they have attractive salary and pension.

The traditional Gorkha tribes (generally of Mongolian origin) are recruited along with the Chetri by the British Army to form the Gurkhas. Although warrior tribes, they are not considered as Chetri, they are between Chetri and Vaishya. Listed below are tribes and where appropriate their clans: Gurung Gurung clans are; Ghale, Ghotane, Lamchhane, and Lama who are generally priests of Gorkha tribes of Tibetan origin, that have Bhuddist influence. Magars Magar clans are; Khancha, Bura, Gharti, Pun, Rana, and Thapa, they are not the same as the Chetri Thapa. Limbu The Limbu no longer have clan identity. Rai The Rai like the Limbu no longer have clan identity, the Limbu and Rai are known as the Kirati people Tamang The Tamang like the Kirati people no longer have a clan identity. In the British Army the Tamang have also been referred to as Lamas in the past, which was incorrect. Sunwar The Sunwar clans are; Jetha, Maila and the Kancha who became absorbed by the Rai. Chetri/Ksatriya (caste) The British army call them Thakur, but the Thakur are a split of the Shah clan, and should come under the title of Chetri. Chetri is a corruption of the Sanskrit word ksatriya, meaning one of Fighting caste. I have only put down the main Royal Chetri (Chhetri) clans, Shah, Thakur, Khan, Sen, and Mall. The Chetri are the Royal family line, of which the Shah clan has the highest ranking, and it is where the King of Nepal comes from, for example; King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Brahman (caste). They are Nepalese Hindu priests, and the highest clan of Brahman is the Upaddhe (Upaddhya) who play an active role in British Gurkha regiments. Other people associated with the British Gurkhas include: Sherpas Tibetan people who have settled in Nepal, and are the main ones recruited into the Gurkha regiments outside of the main castes and tribes. Other Nepalese people who are also recruited are Lepcha, Newar, Thakali, Punyal, Manjhi, Kumhal and Bhujel. Tradesman, Sudra caste. Sunar, who are gold and silversmiths, Kami the kukri maker, Sarki the shoe maker, and Damae the tailor.

i-nepali, how did you know that he is bahun. and I guess there is no one as stupid, everyone is doing their job. GURKHAS are getting a huge sum of salary for their service to Britain, so that they have to be honest to them. Some people are working in Gas station in US cities, they have to be honest to their owner. so.... Nepalese are honest all over the world, it is known fact to foreinger.

oh ddear...... Gorkhas are the chettrys Originally, your friend had to change his name??? Bullsh#T. Man you even know what it is to achieve the Gurkha Status? The Britons had so many colonies during its quest to expand.........Why the Gurkhas....plain and simple.....the Briton got a ass whipping experience fighting the gurkhas. Have you seen the tempers of ras, limbu, gurung, magars and chettrys. Maybe not. have i seen the anger of Americans ...or everyone else...?? yes...they lack the intensity of insanity...........Get a gurkha mad.......sanity is out of the door and get ready for a insane LATO RIS. But make a Gurkha happy and friend......he will give his life without reasoning. Now this is what others lack. I do agree that all soldiers of other countries are brave men ready for battle........in a do or die situation. its the KAYAR BANNU BHANDA MARNU BES moto and the intense of the fighting skills shown by the compact short yet intense gurkha force Makes Gurkhas the bravest. ....you see the difference between comparing brave men willing to fight and those who defy death are completly different........................Think about it.
