Oh Thanks Detroit in routing Yankees. I could not believe when I saw the final score.

Verlander rolls behind Tigers' 16 runs
Righty wins 14th as Detroit takes three of four from New York
By Tim Kirby / MLB.com

Tigers Headlines

DETROIT -- This is how a team gets a roll.

Justin Verlander was dominant over seven innings and the Tigers pounded Mike Mussina and the rest of the Yankees' pitching staff in a 16-0 win on Monday night at Comerica Park.

The Tigers took three of four games from the Yankees, marking the first time Detroit won a series in its last 11 tries. The Tigers last won a series on July 17-19 in a three-game sweep over the Twins. It was also the first time the Tigers won back-to-back games since beating the A's twice on Aug. 11-12.

Manager Jim Leyland said that the easiest way for the Tigers to break out of their August funk was to get good outings from their starting pitchers. Verlander certainly did that on Monday. His fastball topped out at 99 mph, but he also mixed his offspeed pitches in one of his best starts of the season. He allowed three hits -- all of them singles -- over seven shutout innings in earning his 14th win of the season.

The offense backed up Verlander with nine hits and six runs against Mussina by the end of the third. Brandon Inge and Curtis Granderson each had an RBI double, and all but two players in the starting lineup had a hit off Mussina, giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead after just three innings. Mussina was done after three innings and 72 pitches.

The Tigers also roughed up the Yankees' bullpen after Mussina exited. Sean Casey hit his first triple in more than three years. Casey's triple off Sean Henn in the fifth was his first since Aug. 13, 2004, a span of 417 games.

The Tigers scored eight runs off Henn in all and tallied at least one run in each of the first five innings. Inge hit a three-run double in the Tigers' six-run seventh.

The 16 runs were the most the Tigers have scored this season. It was the highest-scoring game for the Tigers since they scored 18 agains the Twins last April.

Thanks Devil Rays for beating Yankees 8-2.

With the Red Sox win, the lead is six now and the elimination number is 20.

Seattle and Detroit need to keep winning now to push Yankees out of the playoff picture.

shirish dai, njoy reading something that's not related to Yankees ;)

September 10, 2007
Hitting a wall?
By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff
Editor's note: Excerpted from today's Red Sox notebook in the Boston Globe.

One major league scout who watched Daisuke Matsuzaka in Saturday night's 11-5 loss agreed with the assessment by pitching coach John Farrell that Matsuzaka was overthrowing and thus was up in the zone with his fastball. His curveball and changeup were nonexistent, especially in a 42-pitch third inning in which the Orioles scored seven times.

But while the Sox downplay the fatigue factor, the scout mentioned that Matsuzaka's size and maximum effort, coupled with his history of a lighter workload in Japan, make him an obvious candidate for hitting the wall. Before three of his last five starts, the Sox gave Matsuzaka an extra day's rest, but his ERA in that span was 9.57 (28 ER in 26 1/3 innings). He's been giving up home runs in bunches lately, six in his last four starts spanning just 20 1/3 innings. He also has walked 11 in the last four starts.

"Obviously his command wasn't there," Francona said yesterday in his pregame session with reporters. "I just think sometimes as the game heats up, pitchers have to throttle back. That's not always the easiest thing to do."

freak_alien, I understand why shirish bro and other Red Sox fans are rooting against NY Yankees. Red Sox and Other teams in AL East Division don't get the chance to win the Division that often.

I believe this is the first time Red Sox are contending for 1st place since shirish dai started to follow baseball. And he doesn't know when Red Sox may contend for AL East Crown again so it's understandable

looking forward to this weekend series............

Freak alien,

"Yankees Suck".

You can not compare Yankees with Red Sox. Yankees are lot better than Red Sox. But the rivelry between these two teams makes life little bit spicier. Its nice to see little worse team doing better than the supposedly best team.

Now, its anybody's game between Red Sox and Yankees. A small slump and few spoilers can change the scenario for Red Sox (realistically speaking). Hope this does not happen.

Go Red Sox.

>> shirish
Im taking the bro out cause you apparently did not answer my question ...
just like a normal (or should i say absolutely pathetic) red sox fan, all you said is yankees sucks.. haha .. easy to say that eh ? but what happened to my question ??

anywho, now i know you r less of a bosox fan and more of a yankees hater ... be it dude, be it ... i dont blame you, after all u probably became the so called die-hard fan after 2004 ... ki kaso ? just like sooo many of your nations citizen ... pity you all !!!

your hate towards yankees is cause they r a better team than your team ? damn dawg !!!

>> AX,
thanks for the clarification ... ya no doubt, none of AL easters get to the crown , so enjoy while you can ! ... but ya, like shirish said, a little slump and a few spoilers is all they need .. and its not like bosox hasnt choked before ...

Of course, I could be wrong...

I thought it was another spoiler for Red Sox by lowly Devil Rays. The score was 8-1 in the third inning.

Red Sox managed to come back 16-10.

Elimination number 13 for Yankees and BoSox still 5 games ahead. The last few games will be interesting.

See freak

That is the reason why Red Sox fans do get happy when Yankees loose. Yankees can come back any time and stun the opponents/

Now, do you agree that Red Sox are underdogs or not ??

Still.

Go Red Sox.

Freak_alien and comfortably numb wondered:

"how can a team that has been leading the league since day 1 be an underdog to the team thats always been behind them ?"

Do you guys realize that there are other teams in MLB than Yankees and RedSox ??
Look at the stats now- How many times Yankees have beaten Red Sox?

Red Sox managed to be on the top by beating lesser teams - not by beating Yankees ! Is that clear enough ? Get real.

Do I dare to say such thing against Patriots - hell NO !
