Dear Dad,
Thank you!
Thank you for paying 1/4th of your income for my elementary school fee when you had a wife and 3 more kids to feed, educate and shelter. I don’t know how you did it? I guess I was too young to know.
Thank you for buying us new clothes for Dashain and wearing that same polo shirt you had been wearing for a couple of years. I still remember how you looked that Dashain. I guess I was too busy to show the new dress to my friends and relatives that I never asked you if you liked to wear that faded shirt.
Thank you for bringing that used HERO bicycle that I had wished for my 11th birthday. I guess I was in such a hurry to ride on it, that I didn’t even bother to ask you how many hours of overtime you had to work to pay for it.
Thank you for not leaving me alone for a single moment for a whole week when I was admitted to the hospital to cure my typhoid. Did anyone ask you if you were ever tired/sleepless? I didn’t.
Thank you for not traveling to see your sick dad so that you could save up the expenses for that first TV we wanted in our living room. Did you get to see your dad in his final days? I guess not, you were too broke to even call him.
Thank you for smiling and hugging me when I said, “I hate you†for not buying me an 80 cc bajaj scooter when all of my friends were riding on Hero Honda Splendor. Were you really smiling? I guess not. Then tell me why did you go to your room and sob? I saw you dad.
Thank you for sending me off to Kathmandu University for my intermediate studies, when I could’ve joined Tribhuvan University with fewer expenses. Do you have enough funds on your pension account now? I guess I wouldn’t know unless you tell me dad.
Thank you for not letting us know about your everlasting back pain so that you didn’t have to go to the doctor. Does it still hurt? I guess so, because the only time I know you went to the hospital was when I was admitted for typhoid.
Thank you for those tears you shed when you found out I passed my intermediate exam in first division. Are you still proud of me? I guess all parents are proud of their kids.
Thank you for sending me abroad for my higher education even though I knew you couldn’t afford it. Did you pay off your debt yet? I guess not. You are retired and you don’t have any pension fund left for your so called golden (?) days.
Finally, thank you for thanking me for my achievement. Let me ask you dad, do you think it’s worth devoting your past, present and future for your kids? I guess I won’t know unless I have my own kid(s).

Punte, awesome man. What a tear-jerker! Thanks for bringing this great work about. Having lived away from home for so long, I've often felt that I've taken too many things in life (especially from my parents) for granted. There are moments when I wish I could just go back in time and do all the amendments required...Sadly, this is how it is. I only hope I'd be able to give back to my parents for all they've sacrificed before its too late.

An absolutely awesome piece of writing and almost 80% work for me as well!!I went to KU, had the sameHERO bike ;) I feel the same when I think about my parents.
I live in japan, where a slightest thing u do is accompanied by a THANK YOU be it to a stranger, ur friends or even ur family members!! I, for one, has never ever THANKED my parents for what they did!! I took everything for granted!! I call back home almost every other day but m never bothered to thank them for all the sacrifices they made for my education, for all the things that I wanted! I m a real JACKASS in that sense!!

Good write-up!
Don't be so much emotional guys, we're gonna be parents very soon and have to follow suit. Parents can never be selfish; otherwise, they will no longer be parents.
Parents probably enjoy far better working hard for the sake of their children and living a simple life than living a luxurious life and doing nothing for them.
I belive they do not expect anything in return from us rather than our progress, prosperity and good health. It is just a foolishness if we think we can return. But we have to be grateful. That is enough I guess.
Thank you so much my parents you gave me birth, raised me and worked hard to give me education. I will try my best to follow your path. Thandavat!

I am forever devoted to my parents and sibilings. To me there is no god or anything greater than my family. Thanks for sharing your moving tribute. Anywayy here is a song which was written by Dan Fogelberg for his father.Sadly, Dan passed away just few days ago.

hahahaha...buncha emotional people  LOL....somebody pass them some kleenex please  on a serious-er note, i have always felt, and this may be true to your case too, relation between father and son is a lil' different, in the sense that there is always this little hesitation in expressing love for each other whereas things are more chilled out to comfort level between a mom and a son. truth be told: we (grown up sons) don't hug our fathers that often as we do hug our moms, no? or is it just me? :P i think it's a bit different with daughters though. i have found daughters more capable of showing love for their fathers than sons (which is why i want daughters over sons :P). of course, exceptions would always be there. and on a personal note, i have always been close/dear to both parents. and the feelings are mutual. moms of course are moms though. they cry as much as they can, hoina? and now that we are 7 oceans apart (haha..i know it's a corny way to put it), sometimes even a thought of her makes me..you know, go lock myself in a room and cry for a while. :( with my pop, it used to be pretty normal, until one day a moment of truth came and i came to realize how much he loves me. i know fathers love their kids but there are very few occasions we express things especially after we get older. that day was special. i saw tears in my father's eyes which was as transparent as his love for me was/is...he was speechless and so was i but i could see in him, the emotional father which i never saw or may be never realized before. then i realize, damn, i have two moms. a father can be as emotional as moms! the only thing is, more often than not, they don't tend show that emotional side of them. puntedamai, you owe me a kleenex now that i really feel like crying
