'Cut-off' in govt funding for jatras triggers protest; Home Ministry urges calm

People from Newar community in Kathmandu staged angry protests against the government on Saturday for not allocating budget for traditional jatras (religious festivals) observed in Kathmandu Valley.

The protesters blocked traffic at several places by burning tyres on the road. There were protest rallies in Basantapur, Teku and Kalimati areas throughout the day. Shops remained closed in these areas with the protesters frequently clashing with the police.

The local Newars took to the streets saying the Finance Minister, who unveiled the budget estimate for the fiscal year 2008/09, cut off the funding for jatras. Protests had started as soon as the Finance Minister presented the budget at the parliament.

On the contrary, some news reports quoting government sources said the funding for jatras has not been cut off. However, the Finance Ministry has not said anything on the matter.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement this evening, the Home Ministry urged the protesters to call off their protest and help maintain peace and security in the capital city.

The ministry also said security has been beefed up in some areas in the capital to prevent possible violence in the wake of the protests. nepalnews.com mk Sept 20 08

Everybody knows that most of the population occupied by newari people in kathmandu valeey. Ahile ayera bahun haru gaun bata kathamandu ma jhardai ma hamro chali ayeko parampara todna paidaina. Yedi garnu nai chha ta ja ta bahun haru sabai kathmandu lai chhodera gaun ma gayera gara. Tyo bahun maoist haru le pahila manchhe ko blood bagauda kheri kehi hoina ahile ayera animal ko  kura garchha. Well done Baburam Bhattrai. I never know that there was some separate budget  for those stupid culture called JATRA. I am so happy to hear that all the budget for NAUTANKI is cut off. If some community want to play a drama, build up own source. It is not good idea to use a Tax money form Karnali, or Tarai and spend for the KODOKO RAKSHI in so called jatra...... which has nothing do with culture.... NAUTAKI......... Some people could not distuingush the difference between drama and culture!!!!!! .

newar ani bahun bhandai fight na garau saathi ho........festivals like indra jatra, gai jatra....machhindranath jatra are our national festivals and part of being nepali. na bhaye indra jatra ma newar haru lai matra chutti hunthiyo. national festival bhayeko le nepal adhi rajya ma bida hunchha. please dont start a racial argument...instead do what you can do to save our cultural heritage.

Accroding to shilandra Newar brought democracy in 2046 and hand it over to bahun. How dumb is that. Seems like whatever Newar do bahun will always rule them and make newar dance on their tune.  If bahun is to blame for current state of country than Newars are also to blame. why didn't they took the main post after bringing democracy in the country in 2046.

Madhesi haru ko buddhi aaera nepal rule garna lagi sakyo , yo newar chahi JATRA nai garera basi rahancha. Bahun Madhesi sanga daraucha aajkal. MADHESI ko buddhi aayo tara NEWAR ko aaena.

Having said that it is completely wrong of our phd Bahun Dr. Baburam to stop the fund for JATRA at the very last moment without prior notice. If Baburam wanted to stop the fund he should have given an early notice may be one or two months eariler and not in the 11th hour.

Even i didnot know that so much money is spent on Jatras. But why previous govt didnot try to stop it. I donot support the sacrifices but jatras and other traditions are what we stand for. However, nobody has right to say anything against any community and sajha should have been able to filter those stuffs.

Also no newars should take this as serious issue and should not be agitated against those stupid people who are against our culture.

First thing, is why should there be funding for newari culture and not other ethinic community. Every community should good share of money and not only newari.   Secondly, why can't newari people geenrate their own money rahter than depending upon the government. 

Why does Newari people are burning tyres and damaging its own country in demand for their funding. To ask for money is one thing but to effect general public and damaging public property  for their demand is completely wrong .

I think its better to divide Nepal into four small countries----one for Bramins and one for Newars, one for  Madheshi and one for others.

That way we don't have any problems.
