I agree with Nalapani, he is very true. do not forget that Basnyats/basnets  are tagadhari chhetries meaning they used to eat meat and drink liquor. I think sirupalis and chapptadis are same basnyats some went to khaptad and some were in Gorkha. I have lots of basnyat family members sirupalis and khaptadis and some of them write basnyat where as some write basnet based on preference both sirupalis and khaptadis do that.
Also notice that basnyats specially khaptadis look more like magars or mongolians as they were very close with magars. i fully agree with Nalapani ji. Nalapani ji if you could please update the wekepedia page about basnyats it is totally wrong specially about khaptadi basnyats stating that khaptadis started by bhotu basnyats granted title by his father.

Thanks Kalopani.
Both Sirupali and Khaptadis write Basnet and Basnyat. Ex cheif of army staff and husband of a royal princess, Gen. Singha Bdr Basnyat (He wrote basnyat) was Khaptadi Basnyat. Kalopani, some of chhetris may look like mongoloid (Like magars) because of cross marriage with magars and lamas. Even today you can see SOLIDOLI (marriage) between chhetris and magars in Humla, Mugu, and upper Jumla. In upper Jumli VDCs you can find all the surname of chhetris (raut, basnet, karki, bhandari, rokka, etc) they have same physiognomy as other chhetris, the difference is they do not wear janai and do not know much about hindu dieties. They call themselves as MATWALI CHHETRI.

So, if anybody says basnets came from rajsthan, it's fake.

@Nalapani I am Sirupali Basnyat.. I know where my gotra leads to.. I think your statement claming "So, if anybody says basnets came from rajsthan, it's fake" is un required..
Sirupali Basnyat are Bhardwaj Gotra and you can trace Bhardwaj Gotra to Rajisthan.. You might be an expert on what you know what you believe, but please do not make bold statements..

Thank You

@ Basnyatt
Do not believe in Gotras all the times. Having gotras may not necessarily mean your origin is linked with that rishi. Flocks of Brahmins escaped from moghul empire in india moved to Karnali region for shelter(not all bramhins are fugitives, many of them are of khas origin). Because of similarity in physical features, they started to convert khas to chhetris by giving jaani and gotras. You are a basnyatt it means you wear janai (at least once during bratabandh) how many threads do you have in your janai? 4 right? Do you know how many threads bahuns have? If bahun gave you a true gayatri mantra and 6 threaded janain then you are of rajasthani rajpoot root, I do not have anything to say. But in our case (we had a samuhik bratabandh) bahun gave mantra and janai separately and differently to chhetri and bahun kumars.  And there were many basnet boys in our group. FYI, there is no difference between a rajpoot and bahun in india. Why bahun treat nepali chetris as untouchables sometimes? Nepal ma chhetri le chhoko bahun le kina khadaina??? And what about matawali basnyat of jumla who do not wear janai and have no any gotra, but they may look just like you ???[ They left unconverted because of geogrpahical remoteness that caused migrated brahmins unable to reach them: read SABAI JAAT KO FULBARI, DOR BAHADUR BISTA] . Give me these answers.

Nalapani's statement on most of the Chhetri/Thakuri origin fit right with most of the research done on this subject.

But if I were one, I would feel more pride on being from Khas region than Rajasthan. I know the ancestors didn't feel it that way.

I fully agree with Nalapani and Stiffler.. i couldn't help but notice that a lot of times Basnyats are asked if they were Newars or mongolians based on their feature which does not resemble rajisthanis. I also do not think that all chhetries were downgraded from brahmans. thank you Nalapani for your good research. i would like to ask you to write a book if not research  paper or an article on this matter. there are lots of confusion in chhetry families specially Basnyats about their origin, most often brainwashed to think that we were downgraded caste from bahuns when they married a lower caste. thanks again. also i was wondering what would you say about the wekepiedia information about basnyats, specially khaptadis . i don't believe it is fully true beacuse khapatids are almost lebelled as not so pure basnyats, but i have no way to reaearch and find out either.

Basniyat word why do you feel a need to create your own basniyet world? I don't like your niyet doing that. People are already segregated by their caste and you want to take it a step further and segregate according to your last name. Do you feel important because of your last name?

Hi Nalapani ji, For some folks who commented negatively about talking about castes, we are talking about historical origin and has nothing to do with casts crap. Isnt it fair to talk about the origin? Very interesting to know about the Chhetris living in Jumla and their different culture and not wearing janais.. Very nice explaination about the origin of basnets. Among Chhetries , I see varying looks as mentioned earlier. I see some resemble more like Magar and have last names karkis, thapas..(I am aware of THapa Chhetris and Magars), basnets etc. What about so called malla, shahi or shah thakuris, from west nepal, where many of them look more mongolian and few have aryan features. Any idea on that. I am pretty sure those more monglian looking thakuris and chhetris wouldnt be pleased to know about their mongolian great grandparents in their bloods. and would seek higher social status by considering themselves more chhetry then matawali blood in them. Please let me know any good book that I could read about

  @Cyrus

I don't see anything bad to explore your root. Chhetris are the most diverse genetic pool amongst different castes/races in Nepal. We have some magars and tamangs (Lamas) with us. Moreover, because of cross-marriage with all the differnet races like Bahuns, Magars, and Lamas we look like almost all people in Nepal. Some chhetris look like mongolian people and some look like bahuns becuase of heterogamy.

Thakuri is a post of ruling clans. If you observe minutely you can see there are two kinds of thakuris in Nepal. The far western thakuris with surnames Chand, Pal, Shahi, Berma, singh, Malla etc are of pure khas-aryan root. while, thakuris of mid-west like Sen, Shah, Malla etc are either mongrel of khas and magar or ones elevated from the magars.
Once upon a time the great khas empire used to encompass area from Kumaon-Garhwal in the west to the  Gandaki in the east. Collapse of this empire in 15th century resulted the formation of baisi khasan stares and chaubisi khas-magar states. Khas (chhetri-thakuris) people have the closest traditional and sociological ties with magars not with brahmins unlike many people think now. Magars and chhetris have many common surnames. One theory is during khas empire when it extended to the easter gandak basin they gave khas surnames based on organizational post to the magars so they became Thapa, Bista, Budha, Budhathoki, Rokaya, etc. Budhathoki magars still believe themselves to be descents of khas. There are many theories regarding khas people. Some believe khas were the Persian-tajik nomadic gruop that setteled in arabale Karnali and Bheri basin in the remote past. During their migration towards the east they detoured the inhospitable kham region and extended to Gandak region also. Some theorists also believe Khas are the offsprings of tajik nomad men and local magar women.
I, personally, am a big fan of Dor Bdr Bista. He is the most prolific in the socio-anthropological context of nepalese society. Guiseppe Tucci, a reknown Tibetologist, has also shed light on khas people. If you are intersted you can check KHAS-CHHETRI page in facebook that lets you know many things about chhetri and thakuris of Nepal.
