ALMOST ALL THIS PORTUGAL FANS ARE DAI CHIURE FANS. before the start of the world cup where were you all shouting brazil , argetina , england ,italy I was here everyday reading and as far as i know i didnt see single post supporting portugal. Apart from the one who started this thread i doubt if there is any true portugal fan.

Bidhan, haha.. I am not atleast a daichuire Portugal fan. I had said before the beginning of WC that my preferences are following:

1) Argentina
2) Portugal
3) Czech
4) Serbia & Montenegro
5) Ukraine

After the first round: 3) and 4) were eliminated and I was left with 1) Argentina 2) Portugal 3) Ukraine

Now that Argentina and Ukraine are out, Portugal is the only team I support, though it is my second favourite.

Portugal will win the WC!!!!

Portugal was and is not my first preference either. I was tired of supporting Brasil and Holland, one who wins all the time and the other breaks my heart all the time. So I went for Spain or Portugal still keeping Brasil the third preference. And now that both of them are gone, I want Portugal for the title.
And to be true, I have kind of a romantic approach towards the game. Any exciting and unexpected results would cheer me up, but I can't watch the team I support loosing, and these french chickens did that twice. So I hope Portugal is going to thrash them in the next game.

Its good to see you back. Portugal are not underdogs anymore. They were one of the favourites from the beginning, that's why they were kept as the leaders of Group D at the time of group drawings.

England got their dreams shattered of winning their WC after 40 years, but Portugal have certainly come back, not only have they entered the semi after 40 years, they will lift this cup!!!

Portugal is also called 'Brazil of Europe.'

hehe, i m not fully back...hehe...yet to start. could not resist not logging into sajha, so here i m. hehe..as always...unexpected intrusion...hehe

yes, they are potentially the tournament fav. but then "conservative" soccer followers always have this tendency to put them aside coz they are pitted against sides like Germany, Italy, France et. al. who have won the cup at least one time in the past. people don't seem to put a break on their thinking to feel that some of the relatively less popular names can also make it to the WC winner hall of fame, hence the tag underdog. hehe

we know, if we compare the remaining teams in this WC by player to player, Portugal is right their with them, if not at the top (or may be as the tournament concludes).


I am desperately waiting for the 9th grand finale, when a new country will make it to the winner list.

i m not a dahi chihure hai, plz. i admire portugal more than any team in this WC. i admit that i am not a portugese fan by birth. the first football game i ever watched was 1986 (mexico) quarter final encounter between england and argentina (or shall we say maradona vs. english defence???..hehe). i don't remember watching it live coz i was a baby (not even a kid), but i do remember my father shouting and cheering for argentina. that's when i started watching soccer.

i have never been a die hard supporter of any team of late, until i saw portugal playing in the euro 04. since then i thought that this is one gem of a team. and i won't be surprised if they win this WC.

Reading your first world cup game, I also happen to recall my first ever world cup game which was also in Mexico '86. I must be as old as you given we are from the same batch. It was the quarter final between Germany and Mexico. The seemingly childish looking, green jersey wearing Mexicans were kind of outplayed by big, white jersey wearing Germans for 120 minutes. It was still undecided, so penalty shoot out followed, which was subsequently won by the Germans.

But I wasn't impressed by any of them. One evening, I heard my father saying, 'Tonight, there is a match between Argentina and England.' As soon I heard the word 'Argentina', I was impressed by that word, I liked it very much. So, I declared that I was going to support Argentina, not even knowing Maradona, Buruchaga and others. I found out much later that it was the very game which went down in WC history with the most controversial and most beautiful goals.

I vaguely remember Sweden vs Brazil game but just saw some blur yellow and blue jerseys after which I felt too sleepy.

I don't remember too many matches from 86 though. 86 belonged to maradona albeit some controversy in the match against England (hand of GOD??? hehe). I remember how Bob Charlton, English coach was furious in the press conference right after the match commenting on the hand goal. But then, the classic goal by maradona, ridiculing the English defense overshadowed it ni haina?

the other match that i remember was the semi final encounter between Italy and Argentina in Itialia 90. Argentina started the tournament on a sad note, after been beaten by the Cameroon. but they recovered really well. the semi final against Italy was decided on a tie breaker. Mardona's right leg was injured, but then his more powerful left foot was intact. He hit the penalty (rather sluggishly) with his left foot and the then Italian Keeper Walter Zenga could not even predict the right direction. That was awesome kick and a bit funny and embarassing for the italian keeper.

Damn, but the cup went to the then West Germany. okay, happens in a game. i hated Germany since then. the hatred is still on....hehehahahah
