Marwari community wants their representation in interim parliament

Marwari community has also demanded their share in the forthcoming interim parliament, which is to be formed after the promulgation of interim constitution.

Speaking at the national convention of Nepal National Marwari Council, its acting chairman Atma Ram Murarka said that the community, too, has decided to enter into politics and demanded at least two seats for the community in the interim legislature.

Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan, addressing the concluding session of the council, assured the representation of Marwari community in the interim parliament.

Marwari community is a leading business community of the country.

The interim parliament has been proposed to include 330 members – 48 of whom will be nominated to represent various organisations and communities. nepalnews.com sd Jan 06 07

I personally do not have hatred for marwari community. But as a honest citizen, and having been in Nepal's business for almost 5 years. I can assure and tell you for fact that marwari community had/have grossly looted nepal's economy.

I personally know of a marwari who came in mid 1980's with just cycle and left nepali in mid 1990's with almost 200 Crore IC and built a major cotton factory in Panipat in India. This gentlemen still owns one of the biggest shipping company of Nepal Atlas De-Cargo. Infact this company was a peanut when I first came across, look where they are now. http://www.atlasdecargo.com/officenetwork.htm adn these offices and business are for real, just so you are ware and it was started in a small shackle in ktm. Great.
We should welcome anyone in Nepal who wants to do business, make money and invest and all.

But here is my problem with marwari's, they come to nepal, and they come with intention of looting local economy instead of helping, take huge debt against junk land that nobody knows weather it exist and run away loans and all the money they have made so far.
second, in any of these companies, they barely employ any of local nepalese in their core office (no knowledge transfer and operational experiences provided). Marwari way of doing business is great, you can't compare. with their little red notebook, the way they do accounting; I don't think SAP or PeopleSoft ERP can beat'em.
list could go-on.

For example; Chaudhari group, they have acquired strings of hotel and in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Mauritius, and so does rest of them.

And worst, why can't nepali govt can't do nothing to these THIEF?.. well you will be surprised, most of them are covered by have diplomatic immunity. Puzzled? Here is starter, for example; Khetan group's Mohan Gopal Khetan is Honorary Consul General of Turkey and entire family member carries diplomat passport. Nepal can't touch'em, nobody in Nepal can do a thing. likewise many of these Marwari who are still in Nepal ripping-off are have some kind of represent no-name dumb countries as Honorary Consul General. Hence keeps looting.

Well these are my gruges out of experiences I had wiht'em and rest what your view are totally upto you.

sqy I have a Tamang streak in me so "Kan chaji ale?" and i just can't help showing off my knowledge of knowing how to speak in Tamang. Unlike you i was very proud to be who I was even when mean girls called me bhotini I was able to tell them how proud i was that I came from my family and wouldn't trade it with theirs and that kept them shut. matter of self esteem i guess and when we are young not many of us can handle that so i understand how humiliating that must have been. therefore if Marwadi's have lived for generations they should be allowed to be nepali in every way. i guess some of you don't like the fact that they hold the keys of nepal's treasury!!! Too bad and Sayami the photo's of marwadi's look great!!! Some even resemble movie stars!!

Lamak_98,

I understand what you are saying.

But let's look at it this way.

Business regulations in Nepal are so khattam and jhoor that anyone -- NOT only a marwari -- can easily take advantage of them.

Just look at the real estate or the "manpower" industry in Nepal -- the two industries that are pretty much run by, well, all sorts of characters including hard-core
gangsters!

One of the major challenges of new Nepal is to create and implement appropriate regulations in such a way that they apply equally well to ALL.

When a newar or a bahun businessman "loots the economy",
we don't see the act as looting, because, well, they are Nepalis -- people like us. After all, just go through the published list of high-profile bank defaulters, and you will know what I mean.

But when a Marwari (swarthy, "Indian-looking", paan-chewing and use all the stereotypes you can fling!) does the same, then, we think therefore ALL Marwaris are like that -- chor and fataha and badmas, people who should be hanged.

This sort of thinking is what I object to.

Yes, there are chor and fataha Marwaris (and no one's denying that!) just as there are, well, chor and fataha bahuns and chettris and what not.

Given this reality, our collective challenge is to develop and devise appropriate legal instruments to punish these crooks of whatever ethnicity .. .. one way or the other.

But you can't look at one or two khattam Marwaris and then START reaching conclusions about the rest of the Marwari community as being this or that.

If you do that to Marwaris, what'll be next?

Will you take your logic further to declare that all Tamangs are criminals. Why? because their numbers a
ppear to be large in Nepali jails. Therefore, the tamangs must be the criminal class of Nepal!

And when you engage in such thinking, where does this sort of faulty generalisation lead to?

Better to say:
Yes, some Marwaris are chor and fataha.
They should be thrown in jail after a due process of law.

But some Marwaris' badmasi does NOT make every other law-abiding Marwari's kaam khattam and jhoor and illegal.

And yes, business regulations in Nepal require all sorts of safeguards and all that . . . stuff for which, alas, noen of our MPs are prepared for. But that's another non-Marwari story.

Meantime, so long as Nepal-based Marwaris hold Nepali citizenship cards, they are FULLY entitled -- as Nepali citizens -- a say in how to configure the New Nepal.

Tetti ho kura.

I don't know this for sure, but I doubt the Khetans enjoy diplomatic immunity on account of MGK's being Turkish consul in Nepal.

Even if he does, we can easily change the laws to make sure that national laws trump his so-called diplomatic immunity.

*********

This remainded me of an online discussion I had had 10 years ago, with Rupesh Pradhan, N Sherpa, Joel and others on the Usenet group soc.culture.nepal

Here's a brilliant extract from Rupesh

*******************

"I strongly believe that Marwaris have lived in, worked for, have interest in Nepal enough that it does not make sense to treat them as foreigners anymore. You may disagree, you may agree. No matter. That is besides the
point.

The point, however, is: isn't it time for us to start doing something ourselves instead of bitching about the success of marwaris? As Ashu said "maday bashing" is just a leitmotif for our own economic failures. Now Mr
Sherpa wants protection for Nepali businessmen! Protection against what? I wonder.

Excuses, excuses! When will we learn, when will we learn?

Just to add to this discussion on successful entrepreneurs versus the rest of us: The Tibetian refugees who came to Nepal just a generation ago have also shown remarkable economic prosperity compared to the rest of the
country. They had less to start off with, they were victims of foreign aggression in their own country. If anyone is a foreigner in Nepal, it is these tibetian refugees. Yet they have come to our country, worked hard and, in general, made more fortune than the rest of us who have lived
there for centuries.

Now it seems it is the turn of the Kashmiris.

How come it is always the foreigners who come to Nepal and make progress (even without any sort of protection against predatory competitors that Mr Sherpa seems to be so afraid of)? Does that say anything about the "natives" --whoever they are?

Of course the truth would hurt our Gorkhe pride.

Rupesh

Suna,

Ashu, Nepe, Bathroom Coffee, Sgy - Good to hear refreshing voices of sanity in the increasing cacophony of this thread.

As someone who wants to see the monarchy abolished, I am licking my chops at some of the comments in this thread. If King Gyanendra were to act on the advice offered by his devotees on this thread, he would be taking the monarchy straight to hell - faster than you can say "Yamraj". Prachanda must be praying the King picks his advisors from Sajha ;)

Maddog -

Examples of good leaders in the current lot:

Girija Koirala, Madhav Nepal, Prachanda

And now examples of bad leaders:

Girija Koirala, Madhav Nepal, Prachanda

In an imperfect world, I don't expect perfect leadership from anyone. But the difference between having them as leaders versus having the King is if you don't like them, you can throw them out at the ballot. What option do you have if you don't like the King? Rise up in arms? Direct rule does not come even close to democracy on this account.

And to your point about Shah Kings and their role in shaping Nepal, sure they played their part and I hope history will judge them fairly for what they did. But politics is not about Nepal's past, it is about Nepal's future. So come back from never-never land: the days of direct rule are over! If you cannot or will not comprehend something as basic as this, then I don't see how you can engage in meaningful political dialogue with anyone.

Also, your over zealous reverence of the King smacks of a servile attitude that is despicable to say the least. This is still a free country where all people aspire to be treated as equals. If anyone expects others to be subservient to a King in this day and age, then I'd they have some pretty serious developmental issues.

Dimple -

"Anyways don't you think so Captain " whats in a name that we call rose would smell as sweet if you changed the name" there is no harm done in namecalling it has come with us a long way!! We do that in our everyday talk don't we?? So why make a fuss about it??

I don't really think so. You can speak for yourself there but I think most rational people refrain from name calling, even in day-to-day conversation, because it is a waste of time and distracts from the real issues. Name calling personalizes a discussion often to a point where the conversation becomes one about personalities and not ideas. An ego gratification or protection exercise - depending on how well your side is doing. When personalities , and not ideas, dominate and drive a discussion, nothing meaningful ever comes out of it. With all due respect, I am actually surprised to hear a comment like that coming from you because I don't know how you could seriously say something like that if you have ever had a meaningful and productive dialogue with anyone who disagreed with you. If you and I started calling each other names, what sensible conversation could we possibly make out of it?

it's just fine for the marwadi's to be a part of the new Govt. of Nepal if maoists can??Was'nt that the main issue??? "

Sure it was. Before the thread morphed into this free-for-all format. Well, at least there is something we can remotely agree on - phew! The Marwaris asked for 2 seats - big deal! No one knows if they are going to get it - they could end up with nothing for all we know. That allocation by ethnic group has a very broad and undefined scope - maybe they will be considered part of the Madesi ethnic group for this purpose or maybe they wont. I don't understand what the hullabaloo is about. To me most of the debate on this thread is motivated by hatred and prejudice and is devoid of any clear thinking.

Bahunkto - Sorry to say but your tiresomely pedantic logic is irrelevant to the conversation at hand. Your world-view seems shrouded by archaic notions of caste and ethnic identity. So far, I can't see where it has added any value to either the issue of minority representation or that of public policy in the new Nepal.

Hey bahunkto -

My bad if my comments came across as a bit harsh. I felt it was irrelevant, if not outright provocative, to talk about ethnicity in the fashion that you have a when the subject is minority representation and future direction of the country in light of changing ethnic and caste equations. That's really what was behind my comment. I too have nothing personal against you and am willing to listen to anything sensible you have to say.

Regards.
