Happy Monday guys!!!

When I was little girl, my grandfather used to read me Ramayana. The story used to fascinate me. Now after all these years, I want to know the story from Ravana’s perspective. I’ve been following a TV serial based on Ravana and I’m finding it really interesting.

It’s been a boring Monday morning. Wanted to open a new thread to see how my friends in Sajha were doing :)

ravan did not invent the aircraft. He took the Pushpak Vimaan that originally belonged to Kuber.

i don know much about inventing aircraft but i read that he landed "Dandu Manora'-aircraft
in Lanka ..................

dautari, in the serial, when Kuber is in the Pushpak, Sumali (ravan's maternal grandpa) says..


HERRRR.. MORA LE MERO PLANE CHADEKO..

so in the serial, Pushpak was already there before Ravan's birth

This brings me to Ravana's people: the rakshasas.

As far as I could understand, Rakshasa were different from the ultimate nemesises (is that the correct spelling?) - the asuras, the daityas and the danavas

Rakshas were actually the cousins of the Yakshas (ruled by God Kuber) and the Gandharvas (the musicians of the gods). Their original king was Nirriti Dev.

In Swasthani, Nirriti dev and his army of rakshasas actually fought on the side of the gods in the battle against Tarakasura.

What I don't know is when the rakshasas fell from that status to the status of demons.

We really need a learned Hindu scholar here - someone show has been wellversed in the Vedas and the Puranas. I think the rakshasas were not so completely demonic during the Vedic era but when the Puranas were written the Rakshasas became almost synonymous with the demons.

This is really intersting. To me it's like rereading the Bible from Lucifer's point of view or looking at Superman from Lex Luthor's point of view.

The Bible from Lucifer's point of view??? The word Lucifer is mentioned only once in the bible, my friend (Isaiah 14:12 ). How about saying the New Testament from Judas' point of view? I think that works better

As I read more about Ravan I am liking him..............haha
but Ram is Ram which is embedded within our brain from the childhood

You know Ram sent Laxman to get some knowlege when Ravana was taking his last breath..
Ram also respected Ravan actually.........

It was actually shown that Ram had immense respect for Ravan..he was very angry with Laxman when he killed Ravan's chora Meghnath..

do you know how ravan was killed?

some say that he was attacked in stomach but some say in heart.....................

Then turning to Laxmana Rama said, "O dear brother, look the mighty Ravana is lying on his death bed. His knowledge of Vedas and Scripture is beyond doubt. But equally true is the fact that you will not find more knowledgeable authority on politics, statesmanship, and sociology on the earth today. Please go and get the knowledge from him."

Thus Laxmana, sitting at the feet of Ravana, learnt many useful things on diplomacy, politics, tax structure, social reforms, war preparedness and many more from him. When Ravana breathed his last, Rama himself conducted the last rites befitting the grandeur of Brahmin Rakshasa King. Thus one important aspect of the Divine Play - LEELA - enacted by the Lord came to an end.

Ravana and Hanuman, Laxmana and Sita, Sugreeva and Jambuwanta, (and all others) were but the actors playing their allotted or designated role. Nobody is all evil, nobody is all good! The human form by necessity brings weaknesses to the human character. Some appear sinner, some saint!

Ravana was born to the sage known as Vishrava. His mother was the Asura princess Kaikesi. Kaikesi's father, Sumali wished her to marry the most powerful being in the mortal world, so as to produce an exceptional heir. He rejected the kings of the world, as their power was less than his. Kaikesi searched among the sages, and finally chose Vishrava. Vishrava warned her that as she approached him at an inappropriate time, their children would be evil, but accepted her nevertheless. So, Ravana was partly Asura, and partly Brahmin.

Sumali wanted Kaikesi to marry Visharva. Visharva is Pulstya's son, son of Brahma and Kuber is Visharva's son. Sumali wanted a heir who would get back Lanka from Kuber and he knew that the heir needed to be powerful than Kuber. So, he decided to send his daughter to Kuber's father to have a child. The child of Kaikesi and Visharva would be powerful than Kuber as he would also have blood from Rakshasa.

Well.. this is what the serial showed. He had son older than Kaikesi and could not reject Kaikesi as he was a Aryan and they could not say No when somebody asked for something.. hahahaha

Visharva already had a wife (Kuber's mother). Vishnu went to Kuber to ask him to stop his father from marrying Kaikesi but by the time he reached, they were already married. Kuber's mother came to Lanka with Kuber and never returned.
