BREAKING NEWS from ekantipur.com Nepali team advances to AFC President's Cup final Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, Sept 28 - Nepali club, Mahendra Police Club (MPC), has secured a berth in the AFC President's Cup final for the first time Thursday. A 90th minute goal by the MPC skipper Ramesh Budhathoki paved the way for the club to enter the final. In the first semi-final match of the tournament, the MPC beat former champion Tajikistan's Regar TadAZ 2-1 at the Punjab Stadium yesterday. The winner of the second semi-final to be played between Dordoi-Dynamo of Kyrgyzstan and Ratnam Sports Club of Sri Lanka at the same venue today would decide the other finalist. Rustamov Maruf’s 26th minute goal provided the Regar TadAZ lead in the match. Jumanu Rai’s goal, only six minutes later, brought Nepal back into game. Rai made a beautiful goal from a pass from Arjun Rijal. The crucial goal by skipper Budhathoki following a pass from midfielder Ananta Thapa ensured Nepal’s berth in the finals. Earlier, Nabil Three Star Club had advanced to the semi-finals in the first edition of the AFC tournament held in Kathmandu. Likewise, Carlsberg Manang Marsyangdi Club was ousted in the first round of the tournament last year. MPC has become the first South Asian team to enter the finals of AFC President’s Cup with this victory.

Dordoi-Dynamo pitted against plucky Mahendra in mouthwatering final 29 September 2007 LAHORE: Kyrgyzstan's Dordoi-Dynamo and Nepal 's Mahendra Police Club will fight it out for the prestigious champions’ tag in the third AFC President's Cup here on Sunday night. This promises to be a mouthwatering finale. On one end is a side that has enjoyed hegemony over the one final slot all three times, including the current one, and is the reigning champion to boot. On the other is a gutsy, fighting-to-the-end South Asian outfit that has in a major upset already ousted the other Central Asian giants, Regar-TadAZ. The history, current form and calibre favour Dordoi heavily but Mahendra cannot be ignored for its pluck and panache. And as Dordoi would have learnt from their contest against Ratnam – with the former winning but only after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time had produced a 1-1 tie – such attributes can tilt the scale in favour of the underdogs. That said, Dordoi is by far the better all-round team. One measure of this is their star forward Roman Kornilov. Only sporadically fielded, he pumped in four goals in the last league game against Tatung. In the semi-final against Ratnam, he again had a few shots, though no goals. It perhaps was not his night. Kornilov won the Most Valuable Player award in the previous edition at Kuching , Malaysia . And he, in combination with another star forward Ildar Amirov, remains a threat to counter for Mahendra. Apart from enormous strength up-front, having conceded just one goal in four previous outings, reflects that Dordoi possess a watertight defence. For its part, Mahendra Police are aware of the enormous task at hand. But under the swift-moving forward Ramesh Budhatoki, whose last-gasp goal against the highly-fancied Regar-TadAZ catapulted them to the final, Mahendra are imbued with a can-do spirit after two superb wins – against Regar in the semis and the 6-4 hammering they handed out to Cambodia's Khemara. Mahendra also boast of a solid defence, led by experienced national defender Rakesh Shrestha with youthful but experienced Ritesh Thapa tending the goal. Former national midfielder Anant Raj Thapa, Jumanu Rai and Ramesh Budhathoki are the other key players. Dordoi-Dynamo coach Boris Podkorytov is pretty confident that his charges would up the ante to land their second successive title. "We were held up in the semis, but that was another game. My boys know what is required of us in the final, and though I do not want to show any disrespect to Mahendra, we have the resources to clinch the issue,†he said. Mahendra Police Club coach Birat Krishna Shrestha believes that having come this far, his team would give their all. "Our plans have worked so far, and we would be doing our damnedest to execute them well in the final,†he added.
