'Cut-off' in govt funding for jatras triggers protest; Home Ministry urges calm

People from Newar community in Kathmandu staged angry protests against the government on Saturday for not allocating budget for traditional jatras (religious festivals) observed in Kathmandu Valley.

People from Newar community protesting the government's decision to cut funding to jatras (traditional religious ceremonies) at Basantapur...

The protesters blocked traffic at several places by burning tyres on the road. There were protest rallies in Basantapur, Teku and Kalimati areas throughout the day. Shops remained closed in these areas with the protesters frequently clashing with the police.

The local Newars took to the streets saying the Finance Minister, who unveiled the budget estimate for the fiscal year 2008/09, cut off the funding for jatras. Protests had started as soon as the Finance Minister presented the budget at the parliament.

On the contrary, some news reports quoting government sources said the funding for jatras has not been cut off. However, the Finance Ministry has not said anything on the matter.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement this evening, the Home Ministry urged the protesters to call off their protest and help maintain peace and security in the capital city.

The ministry also said security has been beefed up in some areas in the capital to prevent possible violence in the wake of the protests. nepalnews.com mk Sept 20 08

 I agree this was not a good a  move from goverment. But why are we still fighting among our selevs, saying we are barmus and Newars. It just doesn't make sense. No all of us are Nepalese  from same land, whose dream is to see our mother land prosper haina ra bhanya?

If they don't want to fund Newari programes then newars sould stop paying government taxes end of story.

Its like asking sherpas not to climd mountains anymore. Newari culture is defined by these festivals, IT IS A MAJOR ATTRACTION FOR TOURISTS. They are going after the very elements that bring the bread to tourist industries. THEY MUST BE OUT OF THEIR FUGGING MINDS. NEXT THING YOU KNOW.... THEY WILL MAKE EVERYONE WEAR UNIFORMS. HA HA HA

I don't know if someone brought up what I'm about to say but lets look further into the future people. I think that these are the preliminary steps that need to be taken for a well orchestrated plan to divide Nepal. After all many nations have fallen into this trap including our neighbor India, who suffered the practical application of the clever British contrived plan of divide and conquer.
I remember studying religious tolerance in my 5th grade Social Studies class, I also remembering how Nepal was called the garden of 36 subcasts. But has this garden turned into a gridiron where we (Nepali not bahun, rai, limbu, newar, magar, tharu, madeshi, etc) are being manipulated into clashing against each other for the racial superiority? I would like to think the answer is yes. But is the price worth it? If you ask me then I would have to say no because the superiority of one would mean that the person who thinks s/he is superior is de re disrespecting the quality of being Nepali by doing so.
Whenever it comes to such racial debates people aslo tend to bring up questionable racial acts towards others. So in that respect don't you think that germans should have a racial tension with the jews because of the holocaust? Its hard to heal the cracks and wounds once they have been created. It is even harder to heal when they have been open and sore for thousands of years. Look at India and Pakistan. What has the war brought to them. Still now they can't find common grounds and seal the wounds that was created 50 years ago.

My quick views:

 

1. State funding for the ritualistic animal sacrificing must be terminated purely on the ETHICAL ground (irrespective of whether the sate is secular or non-secular).

 

2. However, like for just about anything in a democratic society and particularly when we already have a degree of political stability, every change must be brought after sufficient education/sensitization/publicity and public debate. (it seems to me that our leadership/bureaucracy is still has a secretive and fearful mentality of Panchayat era !)

 

3. The state needs to have a long term vision for a slow transformation of itself to model after the principle of “secularism” leaving the matter of religious and cultural PRACTICES primarily to the local communities themselves.

 

4. The current agitation is a result of government’s lack of PR skill. It must learn the lesson (of the importance of the publicity, sensitization, public debate and so on).

 

5. There is also misunderstanding (some deliberate) on part of the agitators ( and  our Sajha supporters as well). But I blame the government for it anyway. (“आफ्नो थैली राम्रोसंग बाँध्नु, अरुलाई दोष नदिनु” भनिन्छ नि )

The government's decion of cutting fund is toatlly wrong. I fully support the right of Newari communities to celebrate their festival as usual. But lets analyse who brought this killers to the power? Some people may be not all Newar communities from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and the Bhaktapur are also has some blame to take. They voted those killers to power without thinking what will be the consequences or the result of this. So what should we do next? The answer is very simple don't vote them and they will never be in the position to do any stupid decision.

 नेवारले हाम्रो संस्कृतिमा धावा बोल्न पाइन्न भनेर आवाज उठाउँदा बाहुनहरु किन खुच्चिङ भन्दै उफ्रन्छन ? नेवारलाइ पीडा हुँदा बाहुनलाइ किन मज्जा आउँछ ? नेवारले रमाइलो गर्दा बाहुनलाइ किन इर्ष्या लाग्छ ? उपत्यकामा मुसलमानहरुलाइ सम्मान दिएर नेवारले नै राखेका थिए ।

ईन्द्रजात्रा मा देखिएको बाबु राम जात्रा बारे नेवार र गैर नेवार बीच फाटो ल्याउने कुचाल साझा भित्र पनि देखियो। देश मा त छर्लङ नै भैसक्यो।
जात्रा, पर्ब कुनै जाती बिशेष को हुँदैन। नेवार कुनै जाती हुँदै होइन। नेवारी भाषी समुदायको परिचयबाचक् नाम हो। नेवार भित्र ब्राम्हण, छेत्री , बैश्य र शुद्र सबै छन। त्यसमाथि बौद्धमार्गिहरुको संख्या उल्लेख्य
 
ईन्द्रजात्रा को जात्रा मात्र १५ हजार को कुरा होइन। लाखे नाच चलाऊनको लागि सरकारी कोषबाट दिइने १५ हजार त साझाका पाठकहरु मध्ये जो कोइले दिन

असली कुरो देशको संस्क्रिती माथि बर्बर प्रहार हो। आज ईन्द्र जात्रा मा गरे, भोली भक्तपुर को बिस्केट जात्रामा गर्ला। पर्सी मिथिलाको छठ पर्ब मा गर्ला, निपर्सी जानकी मन्दिरलाई वाइस्याल बस्ने धर्मशाला बनाउछु भन्ला। जाती र संसक्रितिमाथिको सुनियोजित आक्रमण को प्रथम चरण थियो माओवादी को । अर्थात पूर्ण साम्यवाद को पहिलो अभ्यास हो। धर्म मनाउने स्वतन्त्रता, वाक स्वतन्त्रता, अझ भनुं मान्छे भएर बाँच्न पाउने मानवाधिकार माथि को पहिलो र अचूक आक्रमण हो।

नेवार को पर्ब र जात्रा माथि आक्रमण हुंदा नेवार जाती लाई हेलाँ गर्ने मित्रहरु हो, बाबुराम र माओवादी को बाघ ले तिमीहरुको घरको बाख्री लाई पनि छोड्नेवाला छैन। अहिले नेवार लाई गाली गरेर ताली बजाउदा को स्वाद आफ्नो घर माथि आफन्तको जिउने अधिकार माथि पोल्पोट शैली लाडे पछी थाहा हुन्छ।

निश्चय नै बली दिने कार्य आज को युग सुहाउदो छैन। बली को बिरोध गर्नुस्।

डा बाबु राम को आफ्नै श्रीमती हिसिला नेवार समुदाय कै चेली हुन र पनि बाबु राम ले यो दुस्साहस गरे। त्यसमा पनि कुनै आश्चर्य छैन। माओबाद को बिर्को लागे पछी   बिद्यावारीधी गरेको विद्वान को त यो हाल हुन्छ भने, तिनकी श्रीमती ले आफ्नो जातिय पहिचान बिर्सन कत्रो ठुलो कुरा भयो र? कार्यकर्तालाई बाड्ने कार्यक्रम अन्तर्गत १ अरब १७ करोड खर्छ छुट्याउन सक्ने ले बर्षाको २-३ लाख जोगार गर्न न सक्ने होइन। हिसाब कमजोर पक्कै होइनन बाबु राम दम्पती । चुरो कुरो संस्क्रिती माथि बर्बर आक्रमण हो। यो आक्रमण तपाईंहरु को घर दैलो सम्म आउँदैन भन्ने के ग्यारेन्टी?

in fact, it is a festival and Newars also grantly accepted Dashain festival as their own.... they never said, they won't accept as their festival ever .....

if it's really an attack against the newar culture, then why not the newars of lalitpur and bhaktapur doing the protest?
i think those 2 cities have more newars than ktm.

Connection Failure

Thanks to all those people who marched the streets in solidarity of our culture. These are the brave nepalese who donot fear Maoist and do what they say.

Good deed. And i hope there was no any casualty and everybody is well.

All those people who just talk talk talk , go and sit in your mothers lap.

well my fren i'm aware abt it.
but ppl have misunderstanding that it's an attack and insult to the newari cultures. if it's really so, obviously that should enrage the newars in bkt and patan too right. they have other festivals like rato machhindranath, bisket jatra (may b the most craziest).

The problem is if govt cuts fund then all these people who are living their life from these Jatras .They dont have anywhere to go. They have family and kids too. Its like American indians in United States surviving through the Casinos. Now at sudden , govt says ok we wont allow u guys operating casinos. What they do? Kill themselves. Instead of helping them , some people tried to intimidate them and whole community. I would like same thing happen to these people and laugh infront of them one day.
