Here are a few tips on how to save money without defrauding anyone:

Grocery:
If you have room-mates, do separate groceries. If possible, buy grocery items your room-mate does not like to consume.
Eat nutritious, quick, and cheap home-made meals.

Money:
Do not lend any money to anyone. That's not your job- it's the neighborhood bank or credit card company's job. Tell him/her you are living from paycheck to paycheck.

Entertainment:
Watch free movies on youtube at public libraries (using a head-phone) and rent for free from the library. You do not need home internet connection if you plan your schedule well. Facebook is a pure waste of time anyway and so is sa-jha dot com for the most part. LOL!

Phone calls
Do not call home too often. Let them call you in turn.

Utilities
No one in your household stays up late when possible.

Housing:
Live in a safe, clean, but affordable housing that does not require you to commute too much.

Drinks:
If you ever feel the urge for soda/beer/alcohol/juice, run to your refrigerator and grab your (bpa-free) water-bottle, breath, and rethink your desire. Carry that water-bottle to anywhere you go (just like Sting takes his accent everywhere he goes).

Phone & Dataplans
Get only what you truly needor will actually use. After all it is a contract to pay whether you use or not.

Women and dating :
Go for ones only worth your investment and time-off from work. Instead of buying your dates expensive dinners and gifts, you might be better off investing the same money to improve your attitude, mannerism, clothes to impress -- difference being even if it turns out to be a failed date, you still have your skills and materials you can use on your next date. Go out with women who are genuinely attracted to/interested in you and be reasonably generous once she becomes a bonafide girlfriend/wife/companion etc.

Clothes:
To look sharp, alert, and healthy, you need to take care your health and body instead of grabbing the latest offerings from Banana Republic or Saks. Go for comfortable clothes with classic looks when they are marked down to a bargain.

Vehicle:
Unless it's a necessity, you do not need one. However, get a driver's license. You can utlize some weekend deals to getaway to places you always wanted to. Some of you might have gone through a phase when it seemed like you bought a car just to provide free ride to some newcomers.

Friends/Companions/"Sangat":
Hang out with people who are neither spend-thrifts nor free-loaders. Now go find a companion for yourself who agrees with all of the tips laid out above.

Bottom-line: Do not skimp on investments that hold promise to signficantly leverage your future earning power.

I always save a decent amount of money. Here's what I do

1) Shop for clothes online or at Kohl's they give you 30 pc discount plus 10 dollars for every 50 you spend. Plus its cheap, its not as fancy as Macy's but its good enough.
2) DON'T buy a new car, the worst financial decision you can take is to buy a new car and see its value plummet by 8000 dollars in the first year alone.

3) Hunt for mileage plus credit cards, I've taken two vacations this year without spending a dime on flight tickets.

4) Quit smoking, drinking soda, coffee and junk snacks. I used to spend about 3-5 dollars a day on these things without knowing. These things will cost you 1500 to 2000 dollars a year.

5) Buy only the amount of food you need. Take vitamin supplements.

6) Live close to work. Buy a space heater. Turn of all electrical connections before going to bed

How do you save money by taking vitamin supplements . They actually cost money and are likely unnecessary if you eat a regular diet.

How to save money is like asking how to loose weight. The answer is simple in general but needs to be applied on an individual basis. How much you make minus how much you spend is saved. So either you need to make more money or spend less. Spending less means making infividual effort and choices for it.

It also depends how much money you send to Nepal. Most of us send money to our family no matter what, so even if you don't have much saving in the US, your family probably has good saving/investment in Nepal (in your name!).

Yuvaraj sathi, vitamin supplements cost about 6 bucks for a two month supply. They help us replenish our poor Nepali diet, without having to buy a gamut of food products everytime you go to the grocery store.

Agree with Yuvarj: No need to substitute food from Vitamins. If you manage and eat well that will be enough.

Await a minute
: If you watch those  suppliments advertisement then yuou will think that your body needs all those advertised products.  At the end you  my end taking 5-6 differnet pills a day as you convienced by the advertisements.

Sathi, I'm not talking about replacing food with vitamins. That would be fool hardy.

What I'm proposing is to take vitamins along with your food because we often don't have time/skill/money to prepare a balanced meal every time. Mine and most single guys' meal consists of masu bhat half the time, thats just protein and carbs. Vitamins just help you get your energy levels up without overdosing on energy drinks and caffeine.

My theory on saving is that you have to make money to really save money. After you make money then ideally you want to try to live within 50% of your earnings and save atleast 50%. I try to live within 30% of my earnings.
