UAE to provide 1 million jobs to Nepalese workers

By Our Correspondent
KATHMANDU, May 15: United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be providing up to one million jobs in the coming few years, Ministry of Labour and Transport Management sources said.

the UAE government has instructed all private and government companies to give high priority to Nepalese because there are comparatively fewer Nepalese in UAE than from other countries and they are known for their hard work and sincerity,?official at the Labour Ministry told The Rising Nepal Sunday.

He said that His Majesty Government had also given high priority in sending Nepalese to UAE because of the climate, which is mild, and other situations.

Nepal has been the source country for labour for the UAE since 2000 and about 100,000 Nepalese have gone there in the last five years. The average income of Nepalese in UAE is Rs. 20,000. After Malaysia and Qatar, the UAE is the third country where increasing number of Nepalese are going for foreign employment. Every day about 500 Nepalese workers are going abroad and 100 of them head for UAE.

Acting Secretary of Ministry of Labour and Transport Management Purushottam Ojha said this is good for Nepal. The government also wants to send Nepalese workers to any country that offers good prospect.

Ojha said the Ministry was also informed about the significant increase in the quota for Nepalese workers in UAE. He said making contacts and bringing jobs is the work of the private sector and the government knows about it only after the quotas are confirmed. But he said that there are about 100,000 Nepalese who are waiting to go to UAE this year alone.

Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) also said that it was easier striking business deals with UAE. Nirmal Gurung, president of NAFEA said that the UAE was willing to take in as many as one million Nepalese and those who are graduate and fluent in English can get high-paying jobs.

Gurung said about 80 per cent of workers in UAE are foreigners. There are about 4.3 million people in that country of which 1.3 million are Indians, 700,000 Pakistanis, 200,000 Bangladeshis, 200,000 Iranians and 100,000 Britons.

Gurung also said that the UAE government instructed the private companies to give high priority to Nepalese workers. The manpower agencies at UAE could have their registrations cancelled if they do not give priority to the Nepalese, he said.

The NAFEA president said that if the UAE opens its resident embassy in Nepal, it would make things easier. Gurung said that the government should take initiative to sign a labour agreement with UAE.

Hey HUSHPUP.. i think u should revise the difference between slave and worker. Those people who ain't getting the money to feed their kids in Nepal can atleast make some money for their families. Anyways, looks like u have no idea about the unemployment rate in Nepal... so stop blabbering and do some research.

So, you're going to generalize the whole muslim community from couple of irrogant groups. Perhaps, you tend to say all Nepalese are murderers looking at the Moaist?

if people demand Nepalese to work for be it UK for army or UAE..since there's such a demand..it's high time someone postulate a new labor law in the UN....demanding higher safety, work environment and better benefits..than minimum wages...this would also help some psyco nepalese to not to indulge in terrosist activities..that we are now stained with...someone shud put a EQAUL RIGHTS STAND on behalf of nepalese..

Now you are on a right track girl.. I wish we had more employment so that people would be working rather than killing each other on their leisure time. Anyways, i hope they initiate some labor laws .. and help our people.

1 million jobs in UAE is good news.

Lot of times people in the US make a big deal about exploiting workers in a third world country. These people are talking out of their ass with their inflated sense of what is right and what is wrong.

I like to think from the workers side. From their side it's an opportunity to earn some money to feed their family. It's a good thing for them. Compared to the state their countries are in and the other available job options they have, this is a good thing for sure.

People need to come down to earth and think from the point of view of the poor people who will benefit from it instead of making it a big inflated clash of college degrees, policies, red tape, UN, what not.

DOH.

Hushpuppy when are you going to get coherent thoughts? Slavery, killings by musalteys, UN, ... You need to get your head out of your ass and think about the common poor people who will benefit from this, instead of your philosophy and policy totting BS.

Hushpuppy, if you cannot put forth any valid arguments, don't resort in name calling. Is that your final weapon? If so, you are out of luck, since it does no good here.

You seriously need some counselling. Go get a shrink and get all those anger fueled in you out. Did you not get all the love, care when you were a kid? Did you get neglected? Were you sent to a hostle since an early age? Poor hushpuppy.

Hushpuppy you are move in tune with ideal situations whereas I am more down to earth.

You want there to be a system that will take 5 years to build then it will be very efficient and good for the workers.

What you are forgetting is that impoverished people are dying right now because of lack of money/food/medical care. They can't wait 5 years for your ideals to take shape. They can't wait for smart people like you to lobby around in hotels and dinners and make decisions about how to make the working conditions ideal for them.

They need jobs right now. Their family are hungry right now. What good is the money 5 years later, when their sick child is dead because of lack of medicine or food.

i agree with you ..but if someone doesn't think into the future..who will??bhola bhala janta of nepal..you heard me right..so did a couple of others..well if it reaches the janta..their parents wud be less worried their children will come in one piece..if at least someone takes this plea to our goverment and then to bigger UN or even the govt of UAE..while people are working that wud be awesome..in order to change things in 5 yrs you say..someone needs to talk about it today......

yes..there was this instance in western nepal couple of years back..we went to carry out a feasibility study on a multi billion project and then its effect on the maobadi tharus who wud ultimately gain as much from the project...then we stopped and asked till then how are you guys supporting yourself since you have no land, no khetipati, you are forbidden to hunt and cut down trees..what do you live on???? they looked straight into us..as if i cud make a good dinner for tonite...then a 12 yr old tharu boy clasped my hand..said lets go for a walk i'll show you around my prized village....

we walked on..there was nothing to loose..my life was as precious as the boy might think..before my eyes was not a tory bari...but an island of ganja bari...his bootilicios sisters were happy campers for the nite..until they wud be carried over into the indian border..the next day...in the name of food, shelter, money...

i thought if i close my eyes here in US i never will have to see such crude servitutde to our hungry tummies..but then i met five ladies in my town..prevously were policewomen of Nepal..then drifted to UAE..where they lost their youth..and of course the money they earned and all the respect they wud have had whilst in Nepal..and now starting all over again at almost 40 here working in places like Mcdonalds...they have cars, house and everything money cud buy..but their eyes tell a diffrent story..what good wud be money if you can't keep your soul alive????????????????????????????????????

You are right hushpuppy that the money would be of no good if the soul is dead.

But have you thought that without that money, they might not even be alive today, let alone the soul? I know this is a bit extreme example but following out discussion here it serves right.

Desperate measures call for desperate attempts. Those poor nepalese who sign up to work in Arab nations are desperate for food, and shelter. If they can find those or if someone provides them with an opportunity to find those, they are, or at least feel like they are, in a better situation. It is all relative.

Hey HushPup.. sorry to say but u do think from a book.. Looks like u've been here for pretty long time or u must have had a good quality life in Nepal as u ignore the fact that Nepal is not Kathmandu and not everyone has the opportunity to fulfill all the assests that u got. Think practically girl, we have one of the worst employment rate.. and worst GDP. While u may say they are not getting paid what they are supposed to but at least they can make a handful to support their families so that the new generation will be able to get the good education so forth will not have to go to other countries for work. No matter where u go.. there is exploitation... and don't forget we have here in US too. Anyways, u have a right point for the ineterest of the nepalese people but that is not practical for the situation that we are in right now. Hopefully u'll understand that "Any work is better than no work".

hmm highly agree that it is definitely better to be employed in the UAE than rotting in one's village with no future prospects or worse : joining the insurgents..and not to forget that the money sent home every month by the nepalese labourers in the UAE is one of the only things that sustains the Nepalese economy today..lets fullfill basic physical needs before getting into spirituality..

however, i do have doubts on the authencity of the above article..whats Gorkhapatras reputation on providing genuine non-wishful-thinking information ?
