Even abroad, where privacy is held sacred.... seems like Nepali ppl don't get it.Perfect strangers, would immediately start asking personal questions within five minutes of conversation. Especially they want to know if you are single, staying by yourself to how much you earn... its just annoying! No one else does that. Now I keep my ipod handy and just put headphones on to shut off the poking Nepali nose.

it's so weird like how hmm..well i mean before someone or in this case me!!! said that i was nosy kind of just went to the bad side of the thread i guess there was more positive comments than before where there was actually negative comments about nosy people!! So, it's almost like people just tend to go with flow of the thread i guess, which makes sense but in other ways it makes the thread boring!! it's almost like people are scared and then you think why would people be so sensitive and careful in just posting in a forum, well i guess it would make a difference if really knew most of the people but still. you know what i mean??

i don't know why i just noticed this but maybe i am just weird!! :S but then again this is not like the first time i noticed it!!
whatever!! :S :S

nails!
Very very peculiar observation indeed!!

Such kind of 'GOING WITH THE FLOW ' characteristics or to use the
more palatable term to the nepali audience/reader is the
'BHEDA' syndrome
that can be abundantly found in most of the threads north or south of this thread.

Being friendly is one thing and poking your nose into one's sensitive issue is another, isn't it? the key is to understand the difference i guess.

well, it's good to be nosy at times, especially with the ones who are near and dear. i am tooooo nosy with my friends and relatives at times coz then only i would get to know about what they are cooking behind me hahaha :P. i don't poke into if it's too personal, but sometimes you've got to be nosy to actually understand if they are in trouble or if they need any help. i had been through many instances, when my friends tried to hide what's going on with them, and i had to really poke into to dig in the details. it's not bad to be nosy as long as you don't offend. :P after all, what's life without sweet/cute/friendly interventions hahahaha:P

LooTe

Nosy gives negative connotation...kind of offensively curious about others. Maybe we we Nepali are very curious about each other. I am very curious, too, but I don't want to offend anybody asking or taking chance to know what they don't want me to know.

I guess I meant for the people who try to be nosy only to offend. I had a chinese co-worker in the past and she wanted to know every little thing when we didn't even know each other that well. And the later she'd try to put me down. then I assumed she must jealous of me :D

All nepali people discussing how nosey Nepali people are!! Thats the biggest irony I see. If all of you claim that you dont butt around in other people's business.... then the topic of nepalis being nosy should not arise... right? I dont understand how a Nepali person says All nepali people are <> and all others agree. Does that mean all Nepali people agree to their <>?? (bad charecteristics being whatever is discussed about.. in this case -- nosiness of a person!)

Humm... Sajha users complaing about NOSE nepalis, eh! Talking about NOSE people, Let's see how NOSY our sajha users are.

I was just reading another thread titled "I wondered why!!!" and noticed some interesting comments.

http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/index0.cfm

Here are sopme of the comments on the thread.

Pearls: Nepali ppl..esp.. guys tend to go back home to get married???
They want to be boyfrens but are not ready to be husbands, no matter what!! CRAPPPPP!!!! After many years of being with various gals, of all types, they HAVE TO return back to nepal n get married to a gal who's been chosen by their parents as if they are sadhu and the gals they find there are all so called Never-been-Touched!!! hmmm .. why...???

Bostongirl: hy are you even bothered to ask this question? You already know the answer why this happens...unless you are just looking to validate what your own reasoning.
They 'shop around'..date girls and.....

Sajhauser: Because those guys are losers! you'd be in big trouble even if you managed to marry one of those.

Rythm: guy normally goes to Nepal to get married because:

a) The guy did not find a girl in USA that he wants to get married to.. so he goes back home and fully puts his future in his parents' hands!

b) He tried his best to get hooked up to severals girl who are in states.... and he had no luck... all the girls he liked never even gave him a second look, so he is hoping that his parents are able to achieve something he could not!

mansion: fak u! I don't faking care what the fak other ppl do in life.

pearls: Mansion, don't spit ur anger on gals. We speak wot we see!!! not just wot we hear!! got that??? tyo eesto cha re, u testi cha re.......
A typical guy's mentality u showed, nothing more.....

I'm not judging anybody based on that thread but it clearly shows how many of them are so called NOSY. talking about other ppl going back to nepal to marry... is that nosyness or what???

Now you decide who was being nosy in that thread and who was not!

Well nepalese people are different in different places of nepal but I found the same in the sajha user weather they are frm us or frm singapore or frm any country.. There is the conclusion there are different kind of nosy people every where and NOne of the nepalese people can leave their hereditary characterstics frm their parents I guess!!!!!!!!

THAT'S WHY NEPALESE ARE NOSY... HEY PREM CHAROO YOU ARE FRM HAWAII HAI SO i DON'T CARE WEATHER YOU HAVE LONG.. DONG OR NOT .......... BUT i DO APPRECIATE THAT YOU CONFESSED THAT YOU ARE NOSY..............

i ain't nosy...... that's for sure...........

So do you think all the reasearch people do to find out why humans behave in a certain way or do a certain thing is just a result of people being nosy? Hmmm... I think what we need is a definition of nosiness!! I think that people are jst curious about why certain people do certain things so they discuss about it. Now if I was asking a certain Nepali guy directly why HE is going to Nepal to marry some unknown girl then tht would be wrong. But discussing in general why people go back to home to marry is just curiosity.... tryin to determine human behavior and likely... human motivation. Just normal researh I guess!

The answer is very simple and that is because of the way we are raised - our society.

Just think about it, when you walk down your neighborhood in the US or any western country, how many people know you? and how many come to talk to you? (It's a little different when you're in college because everyone sees everybody almost everyday)

Now imagine the same scenario in Nepal. You almost know half the people you see when you're walking in your 'tole'. You have to give the customary 'tyaha samma jana lako' or 'tyeha samma gayera auchu' and noone asks you back where you're going but will acknowledge you.

The difference is individualistic society versus communal society. In our society community matters. This could be a side effect of failures after failures of any government that comes into power. But essentially in Nepal people have learned to co-exist among themselves with some kind of human bond with people in their neighborhoods.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. In fact when we go back to Nepal, it's nice that a lot of people acknowledge you when you walk by. You see many people that you know. That's what makes it fun to go back to Nepal besides of course the the time with family. Even with extended family we share stronger bonds than people do in western countries. Even the friendship we have in Nepal is stronger than the ones you find in the western countries.

With all that closeness and human bonds it is likely that one is more curious about others in Nepal. In addition, another factor increases this excessive curiosity and that is the division of classes. We have grown up with caste system and we love to classify people according to thier status in life. So we're curious about their social status and that means personal status in life. Hence all personal questions.

If you don't understand why Nepalese people are Nosy, you might be losing the essense of being 'a Nepali'.

After you've lived in the west, your curiosity about other's personal status might go down because you learn to adjust in the society you are in currently. So chances are you won't be stopped to ask your personal history/status by someone who's been in the west since they were young like if they come to the US before their early 20's for college. If someone comes from Nepal after let's say late 20s or early 30s then it's hard for them to adjust to the individualistic ways of the west and they are still found once in a while in busses, trains, nepali parties, asking you these questions.

God bless them too. and may god bless you too. Happy Dashain!
