Namaste all,
Could anyone tell me why is it prohibited to take sichaun pepper(timmur in nepali) during pregnancy? I searched on internet but could not find any reason not to eat it. My friend who is not a nepali did not know this and ate it atleast for 6 to 7 times. It would be of great help that what she can do now if anybody has answer to this problem.
Thanks in advance.

sujanji,
She has already stopped taking it. I thought nepalese people do know more on such issues so I thought of sharing it on sajha. But I would definitely advise her to go to the doctor. Anyway thanx for your input.

If you have heard, follow it, there must be some rational behind it.
You know many people died eating pigs, Muslim banned it. Now we know pigs are good source of tape worm and untreatable in that era.

As far as I know in Papaya there is one enzyme. ( I forgot the name. papin or sth like that). But anyway this enzyme is a natural cutting enzyme. As if in gene cutting. To break down some protein sequence researchers use this enzyme. The point of not allowing to pregnant women I can't answer it.

It was the JEWs not Muslims who had prohibited eating pork. Later on this practice spread and then Arabs (and now Muslims) also started practicing it. In fact the idea of Halal food also came from the Jews who call it Kosher. If you are in US look for a 'K' sign on food packages which stand for kosher. Usually strict mulsims would consider a kosher acceptable as halal. This is quite interesting inspite of the hate.

Probably because its use was with stale food, to kill off the smell. Eating timur might mean trying to eat stale food. That is what I concluded from this article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sichuan_pepper I hope this post wont be moderated. Sujan
