Amidst all the ongoing (thankfully, now receding) acts of hatred against the Muslims
in Nepal, here is one uplifting story.

Just as fundamentalist Hindus of India are different from Hindus of Nepal, Nepali
Muslims too are different from fundamentalist Muslims who killed those 12 Nepalis.

"After 1959, the Tibetan Muslims dispersed and many were granted Indian citizenship on the basis of their Kashmiri ancestry. They are now settled in Indian towns like Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Srinagar and Gangtok and further out in Saudi Arabia,Turkey and other middle-eastern countries. Many live in Tibet and Nepal. It is believed there are about 3000 Tibetan Muslims living in Tibet.

Our photographer, Dash Bahadur and I met many Tibetan Muslims around Kathmandu. We visited their shops, their homes and met them again at the masjid (mosque) during their Friday prayers. Surprisingly, we were allowed to photograph them. Here are their personal stories as told by some of them."

Thanks for the article, appreciate it. I had come across the Tibetan Muslim community in the early nineties. One of my colleagues married a Tibetan Muslim girl and and we had been invited to the wedding. The experience was amazing; the women had on traditional Tibetan bakku of beautifully embroidered Satin. There were no "Chadors" or "Burkas" or "Hizabs" worn. Only the ceremony was in muslim tradition. No alcohol was served although, there was dancing and merrymaking.

Certainly didn't know there were 'Tibetian Muslims' before today! An illuminating article, indeed. Keep putting up these informative pieces Ashu.

There are Tibetean muslims I used to have one named Feroz Khan during my school, he was from Kurseong. Muslims are not our enemies but yes those who killed our brothers they better watch out for Nepali warth.

If your friend is from Keorsang, then he/she is a damn Indian and NOT a Tibetan. Even if he's got a Tibetan heritage, he's still an Indian. If he made himself into Feroz Khan, then it's whole new story. Everybody got a right to change their religion. Keorsang, Kalingpung and Darjelling are all part of Indian, incase if you didn't know. No matter how sentiment you can get with their ties with Nepal, they travel with an Indian passport and it's the fact. Get it....Feroz Khan....
