Dear All,
J-1 visa, one of the worst visa of USA, so far. Is there any possibility to change this visa to Green Card? Any idea? This thread may help several Nepalese who are holding J-1 visa and looking desperately about what to do.
Thanks a lot in advance.

If you want it. If you have enough publications,
and last degree from an American University, then
hire a brilliant immigration lawyer. Pay a few hundred
dollar what is the possibilty. IT up to laywer. Chanechune
lawyer baat. ....

well, why don't you try Mr. Khagendra G. C., I saw his name
in Nepal patrika. In his interview, he said he is the first Nepali
lawyer to get American Bar Association's member. I don't know
his real capability to handle immigration stuffs related to J1,
but its not bad trying.

his website is:

http://www.chhetrylaw.com/

Before you opt to hire a lawyer, try to find who were his
former clients?

J1 bata sidhai green card is a good option especially if you
came here on USAID's money and require 2 year home
residency. nepal embassy won't be kind to those who
came here on USAID's money as J1 scholar or student ...
they won't issue clerance letter ...... Before you land here,
think twice to accept the USAID's offer of J1 type visa.
Canada bato tataune baheko aroo upaye chhaina, provided
you get green card as an outstanding researcher.

i think you need to get that waiver from state department even before you apply for GREEN CARD or even H1. you would need to get a letter from nepal from a SECRETARY level OFFICER validating that [ sth like that]
then get the waiver.
then think of visa status change and green card.

i think your international advisor will guide till then as well.

after doing your phd if you are hired by a university (post doc, assistant research prof, assistant prof), after one year the university will process your green card, if u decide to apply. a couple of chinese guys i know got their green card in 2 years under some outstanding scientist/researcher quota.
