I want your input on this,
I am planning to take a laptop with me with my upcoming trip to Kathmandu in few weeks. If price is right, I might sell it there to offset some of the ticket expense. I want to know your experience issues like:

-Do we need to pay custom duty, if yes, how much?
-Good brand/bad brand to sell it quickly
-Can we sell it quickly, if we want to?
-How much profit we can make it, what is the average going price in Kathmandu?
-If you have sold one, how did you spread the news? classifieds, word of mouth, personal visit to stores, etc.

Please share your experience...
Thanks,

Kasle bhanya Laptop is cheaper in KTM??
GMT you can make at least $200.00 profit. Tara just take one laptop orwise you will have to pay Bhansar at airport. Also take Centrino, they are easier to sell. You can buy Centrino for around $700.00 after rebates, and sell it easily for 900-1000 in KTM.

Computer hardware is really cheap in Nepal. I went to the computer bazaar in Putalisadak, the whole building has lots of computer hardware stores. Optical mouse is Rs 250 which was cool looking here in US probably cost around 29 atleast. I was looking for PC2100 DDR RAM for my home desktop but it was very hard to find (found it finally though). The quality of hardware is not as good as you can find here, most item has like 3 months store warranty. They have CPUs that comes in plastic sleeves, most certainly not the first grade quality. Some unknown brand P4 laptops were selling for Rs 46 thousand. I know Dell laptops are cheap here in US but you better have a buyer who is willing to buy in Nepal if you intend to sell it. The Centrino laptop I was carrying would cost around Rs 1.5 lakhs in Nepal which costs like thousand bucks in US.

About customs, I dont think you have to pay customs for one laptop. One of each electronic item is allowed for personal use. I went via gulf country.. other people ( sturdy gulf laborers yelling at the officers) who were infront of me just walked past the customs officers without any checking so I just followed them. I felt the real democracy in Nepal for the first time...

My experience was that I took a brand new Dell lapTop 3 years ago and hoped to seel it to make few dollars. I could not sell for my own cost. I could not find a buyer that could afford $1500 for a laptop. Desktops are cheap out there.
