from my experience. Jobs in Chip designing in solid state level is very hard to get. usually asks for phd with 10 or more years experience. I had to give it up...

VLSI and VHDL is digital simulation. That's not a chip design course.
Actualy Chip design courses are:
Analog and mixed signal IC decigns-ADC DAC, PLL, Comparator, switched Cap, OpAmps, Current Mirros etc...
You have to know ORCAD, Mentor Grpaphics, LEDT to design actual chip...
VHDL AND VLSI is completely different side....
