Dear sajha users,
It's been a while I am in the states but I still donot know the full process of law in this country. I just bought a car from a friend but I don't have a title and my friend is in Nepal now how can I register car in this scenario moreover he had title loan which I recently paid off and the title company never mailed me the title.
Thank-you

The title would be mailed to the address which the loan company has. If you dont have the title, legally you havent bought the car. You just paid his lein. So have him contact the bank and see if the title was mailed to his mailing address. After DMV mails the title, he has to sign it on the back for transfer, As long as you can make a purchase document, you may just sign it

Get the VIN and see if you can have rmv mail you another title. Should be a online request depending on the state. You,ll probably need some of his info to verify DMV requirements.

If you transfer title without his consent (duly valid signature- DMV records) per the owner's title document, then ready to face legal consequences. Then anybody can note VIN number from parking lot, get online title cert and transfer in your name? You need to validate his driver license before transferring title for new owner. I would prefer to check with your friend 1st, collect all required information and then approach to DMV.

Technically you were loan issuer is supposed to give you a loan clearance document. You can take that document along with the title signed over to your name to DMV and they should issue you a new title.

In your case I think the title is still in your name but might have been sent to the loan issuer or wrong address.

how long its been ? it will take atleast a few weeks for title to arrive. so if its less than a month, no reason to panic. give it some time.

Tell us what do you have in your hand ? Registration must be in the car all the time. Look at the registration it has only your friend's name then he owned this car if not some one else owns it. You have to act differently in these scenario.
If he owned the car : he should be able to give you singed title at the time of sale. Do you have any written information like bill of sale? A signed check?
If it is owned by a dealer :this is not your car until you pay in full. And you need to transfer it from dealer to you name, Dealer has the title.

After the lien is paid off, the bank notifies the DMV electronically or through mail that the lien has been satisfied. The DMV, then will mail the new title with your friend's name to the address on file. If he wants the title to be mailed to a new address, he (not you) need to call DMV and update his mailing address.

You are paying car loan for your friend with whom you have no contact. You don't know his address and he is in Nepal. Sounds funny and creepy. You are not telling us everything. There must be something more to the story. However, even if you get hold of the title somehow; you can't legally sell it as your friend is the rightful owner and need to sign the title to new owner or you.
