I am going to Nepal flying China Southern Airlines. There is a stop over of 1 and a half hour in Wuhan and a lay over of 10 hours in Guangzhou before heading to Kathmandu. Please let me know if I need a Chinese transit visa. If anybody has use this flight please share your experience. The return flight is similar with a short layover duration though. Thanks in advance.

they give you 72 hrs Visa(on arrival) to chill outside the airport , you can rent hotel or just stay outside boarding area

I am with Nepali passport and my kids have US passports. Does that 72 hour visa on arrival apply to us too? I tried to contact chinese consulate but could not connect. Please advise. Thanks.

You need to pass immigration and show your passport and onward ticket. A special stopover permit will be stamped in your passport(for US)

Recently(Aug 18) there has been some changes to the Transit Visa policy in China ..specially if flying out of SFO to china. Check with Airlines. Lot of people were not allowed to board china Airlines in KTM last week due to that VISA policy.I know this because one of my family member was part of that flight.

Thank you for your comments. I tried to contact the China Southern Airlines and Chinese consulate but they never pick up the phone. I am really surprised at their lack of customer service. The information on their website is also very vague. If anybody have taken this flight recently, please let me know. This seems to be a lot of hassle to go through although the ticket price seems to be a little less than from other airlines. Thanks again.

Another point they do not accept $ /credit card, only their local currency and no english at ALL.

I checked with the airlines. It seems that their visa policy keeps changing quite often and they are not up to date with the latest policy themselves. One customer rep told me since the flight involves two stops in China, it's better to have a transit visa. When I pressed her to tell whether it is required or not instead of saying it's better to have one to be on the safe side, she told me to consult with the Chinese Consulate or Embassy. I got same response at the consulate - it's better to have a visa to be on the safe side. Finally one rep checked with someone else at the visa office and told this - as long as you are not going outside the airport and as long as the total duration in China is less than 24 hours, you do not need a visa. Again this is verbal communication only.
