I flew into Nepal via Delhi. It wasn't that bad to tell you the truth. You have to get your baggage out since flight to KTM is from their domestic terminal and the bus ride from intl to domestic is about 15-20 minutes, they circle you around the airport perimeter. Your carrier and the airport both provides this for free but choose the ones from your carrier since those are usually nicer ones.

once in the domestic terminal, its very smooth. Enjoy the chicken tikka safeway sandwich while you are there... it was yummy.

All in all, I was always very suspicious of indian attitude towards Nepali but I had a good experience on all my 6 flights in/out delhi so far. I think going forward, i will prefer delhi route since i do not have to spend a night in BKK that way and flight was a bit cheaper too.
good luck..

Are you sure we have to check the luggage out and stay all night with all the luggage?
Somebody told me that you can check it all they way to Kathmandu...

I have a US citizen child also, do you know if we need visa for him? If he does need visa, do you know if can be obtained at the airport?

Hey, don't get confused. Just take the trip. Check luggage all the way to KTM or had to take them out of Indira Gandhi Airport, what's the difference. They'll be out, and with you, so what's the big deal - and if you're planning to bring 5 suitcases, act like a 'sahib' from the US of A - flash your Americal passport, if you have one and speak no Hindi, if you know it - and get the aiport porter to take them out for you. Talk to some one at the airport to take you to the aiport hotel - relax in there.

Since most flights go through one or the other foreign city, New Delhi is not that bad. I have been through there a couple of times and through Karachi and Dhaka as well. So, cheer up, look forward to enjoying yourself in Nepal.

Are there good hotels in/near the airport in Delhi to spend the night in transit? I'm thinking this route should be tried at least for the sake of experience... सस्तो त I don't know... मैले सुनेको, Austrian Airlines को भाडा पनि सस्तै छ रे ।

Going to Nepal via Delhi is a good route only if your transit at Delhi is LESS THAN 12 HOURS. If you transit is more than 12 hours then you will have to claim your luggage and recheck it in. Otherwise, your luggage can be checked in all the way to Kathmandu. The problem is, I have not seen airlines that does not require less than 12 hours of transit in Delhi. Most are about 14 - 16 hours :(

Yeah Austrian Airlines.
My grandmother took the Austrian Airlines to KTM last wednesday (Jan 25th). Her flight was at 6:30 PM Eastern time from JFK. It stopped @ Vienna for about 3-4 hours and she was at Kathmandu around 10 AM US Eastern Time (Jan 26th -- Nepal bandh and Curfew ko din). So, thats like around 15 hours? Not bad huh? :D I heard the fares are not bad either. Try that if you are thinkin' about alternate route. 12 hours in transit is not a joke... that too, in India? ha!!

TDH how big is your baby?? Does your pediatritics say anything about travelling abroad with a baby?? My babys doctor is creating a little problem. He says I have to go through a series of processes before leaving US with a baby less than 18 months. And he will not let my baby go if all the shots he is getting here is not available in Nepal. I really need some suggestions from anyone who is travelling to Nepal with a US citizen baby.

MeeraNeera,
I took my 6 month old baby last year. The doctor did recomment us go through the recommend list of shots as published by US health department (apprently they have specific lists for specific country). We did not have time to do all this before we left. Was not a problem at all...

meeraneera, I also traveld with my 14 months old son last year Uzzo is right as long as your child got those shots that are recommend list of shots as published by US health department it should not be a problem. One thing you must remember that if you are traveling without your husband you must carry a recommendation letter from your husband that you can take child outside the US.

Meeraneera it could be just a simple letter, does not have to have any specific format or anything like that. They might only check in the very first airport where you board your flight.

I heard that travel agent will issue two separate tickets one upto delhi and another delhi to ktm. So, in this case if you miss your flight from ktm to delhi when you returning you will loose your ticket from delhi to US. American airlines does not bear any responsibility of Sahara airlines (delhi-ktm). Is this right??
