Business community announces indefinite shutdown against Maoist "intimidation"

KATHMANDU, March 19 - The business community on Sunday declared an indefinite closure of all industries, factories, import-export, education institutions, transport, and business from 3pm today, protesting against Maoist attacks on entrepreneurs.
The agitating Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) today announced its indefinite strike, stating that the government had not appeared "serious" regarding their problems.

A team led by the FNCCI -- which had arrived at Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's Baluwatar residence to hand over a memorandum stating their demands– publicized their plan of agitating during a press meet organized in front of the no. 3 gate of the PM residence.

Angered by the PM's refusal to meet them, the representatives of the business community had announced their strike there and then.

According to sources, the irate entrepreneurs had headed towards Durbar Marg following the announcement. The protesters then took out a rally in the streets of the capital.

President of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) Binod Chaudhary said that although there had been repeated instances of Maoist intimidations, threatening, taking over of factories, yesterday's brutal thrashing of an hotelier was the last straw.

"It is pointless to continue with the business and industries when people are being taken from a central place like Durbar Marg and beaten up in such brutal manner," Chaudhary said.

He further added that Nepal's economy would suffer heavily if the activities to bring down the morale of business community continue as present and the government and the eight parties do not get serious and guarantee security to businesspersons.

Chaudhary said that business community's repeated requests for security should not be mistaken as a sign of weakness, adding that taking to the streets was a compulsion, not a choice.

The CNI chairman warned of continuing with the agitation and shut down until eight party leaders are able to "convince the private sector" and until an appropriate arrangement is made to address the demands of the agitating business community.

Following their announcement, all the business ventures including banks were shut down after 3pm today. Likewise, the Internet Service Provider Association of Nepal (ISPAN) today expressed solidarity with the protest, shutting down internet services for an hour from 4pm to 5pm all over the nation.

Earlier, the Maoists had forcefully seized Harilal Shrestha, the owner of the Hotel Woodland at Durbarmarg, Kathmandu yesterday and beat him up severely, on the charge of supporting the king.

to be really honest, i wouldn't know the answer. "Indefinite bandh" has been our tradition to display dissatisfaction since post 1990-- be it for a greater cause or for a minor protest. we haven't understood that something like "bandh" should be used only as a last resort. i am not supporting the loot, extortion, beating up and other maoists atrocities, but a closure of all business activities for an indefinite period is not the way to go...

i do understand the desperation in the business personnels' part to pressurize the government for an immediate action, but wouldn't an indefinite closure, be like sacrificing their own limbs to help them crawl?

One example we are showing to the younger generation is “Ghandhism was a wrong philosophy.” Gone are the days where resolution through peaceful negotiation was the status quo. In land of 33 koti devtas and birth place of Buddha, Ghandhi philosophy is outdated. So whatever goes wrong, Bandh/violence is the only option.

Our leaders have proved that unless you beat the crap out of civil society they will not talk to you. Unless you kill 13000 people they will not address poverty. They understand you are poor, don’t have citizenships and have no presence in government. But unless you shut down the country and kill 100+ people, they think your right is just one big bull crap. So my friend it is the only strategy that will work in getting something done.

So ongoing strategy should be the followings:

Want peace = Create violence
Want basic human rights = Destroy basic human rights
Want wealth = Destroy existing wealth
You want to solve poverty = Create poverty
&
finally….
Want democracy = Bring Communist leaders

I believe this will be the formula the current leaders is teaching me that I will be obliged to transfer to my siblings.

I think in Nepal’s current equation. What’s not adding is the value provided by the leadership.

Now imagine a scenario, if the PM had met the leaders yesterday, promising to review the situation and take actions, and Prachanda taking the responsibility for the wrong doing and punishing the Maoists involved. How would the situation have changed?

Instead following Nepal-Style diplomacies take place:

PM closes the door and tells the business leader. I am too tired from watching the Ghode Jatra, I need to rest. You wait outside my door while I take a nice nap.

Some idiot from Maoist party, denounce their involvement. I am surprised they have not blamed the Crown Prince Paras for beating the crap out of “Chotta Hari Sau.”

And by the evening our role model, the Supreme Allah Prachanda takes responsibility and promises to take actions. I am sure he is looking for another CD to supply with further evidences of their mis-conduct. If you ask him “khai CD”…..he will say “kholaleeeeee…… bagayo”

I guess this is the capacity of our leaders. This is the art of diplomacy Nepal has to show to the rest of the world.

I am so inspired by this new found approach that I am about to launch my own bandh campaign! From tomorrow I will stop going to work coz they aren’t payment me enough for busting my balls 9-9.

Mr. LooTeKukur...if businessman and Enterpreneurs can close down their business, their only source of living, and country's only source of Revenue (how low or high it may be) other than foreign dollars, for 19 days just to support these irresponsible, insensitive political morons get the power and money they have and close down their source of breath for months out of fear of other irresponsible morons like JTMM and others in terai I think they have done something good for their own safety and security. These political leaders have become so intoxicated of money and power that they have decided to kill the golden goose without worring about tomorrow.

Just few days ago, the Maoists and their leaders were paying tribute to historical genocidal maniacs like Mao, Stalin, and Lenin. Prachanda and Baburam should be one hell of stupid lunatics to follow their idealogies.
Like the saying goes, smart people learn from other peoples’ mistakes, mediocre ones from their own, but stupid ones from none, these maoists leaders need to read the history books again to find out the true nature of their gurus.

दिगो शान्तिका लागि माओवादी संवेदनशील छ भने यसले तत्कालै आफ्नो पार्टीका नेता तथा कार्यकर्तालाई प्रशिक्षित गर्नु आवश्यक छ । माओवादीले साम्यवादी शासन व्यवस्था स्थापना होइन लोकतन्त्रको सुदृढीकरण गर्न चाहेको हो भने आफ्नो कारणले अराजक स्थिति आउँछ कि ? भन्नेमा संवेदनशील हुनुपर्छ । माओवादीका यस्ता क्रियाकलापले प्रतिगामीलाई नै फाइदा पुग्न सक्छ ।

The leading lights of Nepali civil rights movement -- Krishna Pahadi et al -- are more interested in throwing out the defanged, defeated and kicked-at king than taking on the Maoists.

Meantime, the Maoists are playing by their book: slow steady and then total total destruction of everything and anything that lies on their path to power. Like any third-rate Nepali poet, the Maoist leaders know how to use mitho, guliyo and namra (calm) Nepali bhasa to stir blood of the young for devastation and murder.

The April 2006 Andolan killed about 20-odd Nepalis, and that was enough to break the back of the king. The Madhesi Andolan has killed more than 40 Nepalis, yet the netas are still fighting over the spoils of who gets what and how much. And the Maoists -- who do NOT submit the hisab of state-provided millions--go around looting small and big businesses and beating up people.

Good Nepalis seriously underestimate the Maoist threat at their own peril. Those of my friends who have been victims say that dealing with the Maoists is like having a cobra for a pet: It's gonna kill you sooner or later, no matter how charming its dance is.

I wonder if it is time for people to keep and bear arms in their person. Obviously the state cannot protect them as it should. Those who have power and weapons, be them Maoists or other criminal elements, are victimizing people with impunity. Does this situation call for common citizens to arm themselves for their own security, whether or not there is a similar constitutional provision such as that of the US's second amendment?

As a counterpoint to my above opinion: People bearing arms for their own protection could be more of a problem than solution in the long term. But if you are getting roughed up left and right, would you bother about long term implications?

Business community strike affects life across nation; Prachanda alleges royalist "involvement"

KATHMANDU, March 20 - Industries, factories, import-export, education institutions, transport, and businesses remained closed in the capital and all over the country on Tuesday, which marks the second day of the indefinite closure called by the Nepalese business community against the Maoist excesses and lack of security.

More than 70 organisations including the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) and Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) halted all their operations in support of the strike.

The agitating business community had decided to continue with its indefinite strike and demanded the government address its problems at the earliest today.

The Nepali business community has also accused the government of sidelining their problems and not paying heed to their demands.

Earlier today, irate business entrepreneurs gathered at the capital's Basantapur had warned that they would go on an indefinite strike unless they received a commitment from the eight parties regarding their demands.

Expressing solidarity with the ongoing agitation, entrepreneurs and businesspersons said that they were forced to take up a "tough stand" in order to have their grievances addressed.

Addressing the gathering, representatives of the Entrepreneurs and Professional's Association said that the government must maintain peace and security at industrial zones to ensure their unhindered operation.

Chairman of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) Chandi Raj Dhakal, Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) Chairman Binod Chaudhary, Surendra Bir Malakar, Prakash Shrestha, Umesh Shrestha, Shambhu Thapa, Dr Sudha Sharma and Yogendra Shakya, among others addressed the gathering.

Speakers today warned that they would not hesitate to take actions, however strong, to ensure security for businesses.

CNI and FNCCI chairmen Chaudhary and Dhakal along with other entrepreneurs yesterday had gone to visit Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. Nonetheless, PM Koirala refused to meet them which triggered the call for an indefinite strike from today by the businessmen.

Businessmen also accused the government of failing to move ahead as per the people's aspirations.

The gathering of businesspersons converted to a city rally attended by thousands from various trade unions.

The rally passed through major thoroughfares including Bhotahati, Ratnapark and concluded at Maitighar.

The strike today affected life in capital. Most of the shops in marketplaces remained shut down while a visibly small number of public vehicles could be seen plying the streets.

The protesters had obstructed the roads in major areas like Tinkune, Koteshwore, Baneshwore, Maitidevi, Thapathali, and Pulchowk by burning tyres on the streets.

However, Biratnagar, one of the major industrial cities, remained unaffected by the strike with the marketplaces, educational institutions and transportation services remaining open today.

The industries in Sunsari-Morang corridor, which was heavily affected by the two months long Terai movement, continued their normal operations today.

According to Morang Business Association, no industry or business has been shut down as no formal notice of the strike has been forthcoming from the capital.

Local entrepreneurs in Biratnagar refused to shut down their operations since the local businesses have just resumed operations after a two month long Terai movement, during which, they say, they "received no support" from the businesses in the capital.

Meanwhile, in Birgunj, although the local entrepreneurs have expressed their solidarity towards the strike, they have decided to hold a meeting with everyone concerned to make an official decision.

Along with Birgunj markets, Bara-Parsa business corridor has also continued operations.

In Siraha, although the entrepreneurs said that the agitation in the capital have their moral support, they said that they would not, however, shut down their operations.

Bardiya was also affected by the indefinite FNCCI strike.

According to the local chairman of the FNCCI Rajendra Kandel, life in headquarters Gularia, Bhurigaun, Sanoshree and Baansgadhi was crippled by the complete shut down.

The educational institutions and the transportation services continued normal operations, the police said.

In Mahottari, the factories and industries are closed. Various entrepreneurs forcefully closed down shops in the marketplaces to render the strike successful.

The places in and around the Butwal industrial centre were greatly affected by the strike with all industries, businesses, factories and transportation services close.

A meeting of the entrepreneurs this morning had decided to shut down the factories and businesses under the initiation of FNCCI Butwal.

Similarly, Rautahat too remained affected by the strike with marketplaces like headquarters Gaur completely shut.

Likewise, vehicular movement has been minimal in the Mahendra Highway.

Districts like Udaypur, Bara, Khotang and Dolakha were also effected by the banda.

Meanwhile, Maoist Chairman Prachanda today alleged "royalist" involvement in today's protests by business entrepreneurs protesting against Maoist excesses and extortion.

Talking to media persons in Dhangadhi today, Prachanda said that the beating up of a businessman by Maoist cadres had been blown out of proportions, alleging royalists of being involved in the current protest of the businessmen and entrepreneurs.

Slamming hoteliers as "feudalistic and disgraceful", he said that beating up anyone was "against his party’s policies" adding that his party cadres had already apologized for the act.

He also assured that actions had already been taken against the two cadres involved in the incident.

I wonder what sajha maoist supporters such as NEPE and NEWUSER have to say about the deteriorating condition of Nepal.

From what I hear from nepal, this bandh isnt the usual forced nepal bandhs proclaimed by the maos or the parties.....the industrialists themselves willingly closed down their shops in support.

Why would they open their business if they're getting looted everyday by thugs in the street untouchable by law??

Also something else I noted in the pictures from the protest; most of the participants look more mature and intellects; contrast to most of the other protests, where some 16 year kid is burning tires and showing their anger. This protest is more of a frustration cry from the common people......me think!!!!

It seems from the link Shirish posted that other professional organizations are joining in too - is that true? I personally think this could turn out to be one of the most effective pressure tactics used against the Maoists if the protests are clearly directed at the leadership and if the govt can take advantage of these protests to further push disarmament and a stop to extortion and violence.

Hopefully the SPA and Maoist leaders are smart enough and matured enough not to let this jeopardize the stability of the government and the peace process.
